The 9 Natural Laws of Life

A couple of weeks ago, I was back in my motherland of Michigan for a fitness business mastermind.

My good friend Vince runs the group and he always drops some great wisdom and knowledge for us to go and implement.

Well, the reason that it was out in Michigan is because I gave Vince a book by Ari Weinzwig, the owner of the world famous Zingerman’s Deli and long story short, they became good friends.

So, Vince set up our meeting out there so we could have dinner at his place and have him talk to our group privately.

It was quite a thrill!  And in today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I go over the 9 Natural Laws of Life, a twist on an idea I got from hearing Ari speak.  You can listen to the episode here: http://kylenewell.com/inner-strength-podcast/

P.S-We are having our annual Festivus party on the 15th of December.  It’s a great event, it’s BYOB and Potluck, kids are more than welcome (hopefully we will be able to get the live reindeer again this year).  All donations will be going to Coach Gina and her kids for the holiday season because as you may or may not know, their house burned down a little over a month ago….be grateful for the little things.

Knees on the Hands

Two Saturdays ago, we had our normal Saturday morning workout, just me and the guys. It was a small turnout because of the Thanksgiving weekend, but we had fun nonetheless.

Well, coming in to the last quadplex (four exercises in a row cluster), I started with heavy goblet squats using the 95 pound dumbbell for 25 reps. Insanely heavy? No, but when you add in 25 reps, your heart gets movin!

And then there were 3 other exercises to sprinkle behind that. After the final set, I put my hands on my knees, a big NO-NO in my book. I call people out on it, especially our athletes. So, I was glad that my man Jeff called me out; we both had a good chuckle over it!

Yes, you are going to get tired in your workouts and in life, but the keeping the hands off the knees is more of a mentality, not showing anyone your fatigued and not buying into the complaints of the brain when you do get tired.

Remember, the brain will give out long before the body needs to, if we allow it.

The Darkness Will Lead to the Light

In last week’s Friday episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I made a few important highlights that I have come to know through self-reflection throughout my life.

If you want something from others, you must give it first.  If you seek more attention from your spouse, give him or her more attention.  Life isn’t about getting, it’s about giving. You can only love to the degree that you love yourself first.

Secondly, the flaws we see in others are the flaws we most dislike about ourselves.  If you snap when your partner keeps checking their phone when you are trying to talk to them, then maybe, just maybe, you don’t like your inability to be present in the moment.  Think about it.

Use these two points for some self-reflection the next few days, see what you come up with.

Being Stuck in a Peaceful State

Earlier this week I was telling you about my flight out to Michigan a few weeks ago.

Well, on the way back, I got a text on my way to the airport telling me that my flight had been delayed two hours.

I reframed the situation quickly and decided I would get some reading in, my daily meditation and some planning for the following week.

The flight wound up getting delayed a few more times, so I just kept re-framing it.  It wasn’t bad, it was a good thing because of the gap in my schedule it opened up.

The delays meant that I didn’t get home and to sleep until 1 AM, only to be up again at 5 AM to Coach 4 sessions, which again, I reframed before going to bed.

I could have thought about being tired and being bitter about my delay, but instead I thought of how cool it was that I still get to go after my passion and have these opportunities to Coach clients every single day.

Reframe, it’s the most important skill you’ll ever learn.

PETE ROMANYSZYN

Here is Pistol Pete’s fitness journey in his own words.  It’s not all roses, he owns it and he has inspired through it.

“I was a whopping 5lbs14oz at birth, full term, which is when I was forced into my “bulking” phase; yup they would wake me up to feed me. It kinda went all downhill from there. I was a very active kid, always involved in organized sports and pick up games with my friends. I thank god that we didn’t get an Atari when I was that age, I still suck at most video games. So being the “big” kid I never got to play Pop Warner football and always wore number 13 playing baseball because it was the biggest uniform. In high school I continued to play sports but never got any real or for that matter bad coaching in the realm of weightlifting or nutrition.

I went right into medic school after high school and then started my EMS career. I would routinely work six 12 hour shifts a week between a full time job and two part time jobs, sometimes I’d have a 24 hour shift sprinkled in for fun. Fast food was life, mixed in with some awesome ethnic food depending whether I was in Perth Amboy, Elizabeth or New Brunswick. I GOT LARGE. So I joined the health center at the hospital and I would go in and put in an hour of completely haphazard work, but I broke a sweat so it counted for something. Then came the low carb high protein with the pills diet plan, it worked but not anything sustainable, probably because they had to reformulate the pills something about hearts blowing up with prolonged use.

I had the big career change and got academy fit. I dropped about 15 pounds before the academy and about another 15 or twenty while I was in. I was in good condition walking out. I made on and off attempts at working out at a box gym over the next years, bought an elliptical for home, yada, yada, yada. I gained and gained until I maxed out at about 323 lbs. and realized I had some problems. I got put on meds by my doc for cholesterol and diabetes, BAM smacked in the face!!! I started using a phone app that tracks all of your ins and outs and had success because I was holding myself accountable.

This is when my fitness journey began in earnest. I was introduced to Newell Strength as a client in a fat shredder contest. Not gonna lie it kicked my ass. The first couple of weeks I’d go to the gym then get home walk through the door and LITERALLY lay down on the floor and sleep. Seems like a long time ago. Since then I’ve become part of the tribe and continue on my transformation journey. I’ve gotten off of the meds and normalized my blood work, which is a huge positive. I’ve made physical changes that are drastic enough that people notice and comment which is a big boost to the ego and makes me want to continue putting in the work.

I’ve had periods of great focus and success as well as periods of no focus, no workouts and downward trends. It’s my path, I own it positive and not so positive.”

The Story of the Mexican Fisherman

I first heard the story of the Mexican Fisherman back in 2008.  That was at a point when I wanted so badly to ‘make it’, that I was willing to do whatever it took.

Granted, I was ten years younger, but the story resonated with me, even back then.

In case you have never heard it before, in today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I retell the story with some key insights that’ll help to make your life just a little more joyful today.  You can take a listen over here: http://kylenewell.com/inner-strength-podcast/

My Trip Back to the Motherland

A week and a half ago, I flew out to Michigan.  It was the first time that I was back there in 20 years.

We moved here to Jersey from out there when I was 7 years old.

But, this was not a leisurely trip, nope.

It was for business, in particular a mastermind that I am in.

The flight out was a little bumpy, which only added to the issue of it being a really small plane.  My head was touching the ceiling when I walked down the aisle.

Luckily, the fellow next to me was nice.  We made a bit of small chat and then he got to his audiobook while I got to my old school books.

Anyhow, the next morning at the mastermind meeting, in walks this guy, Marty.  The very same guy that was sitting next to me on the plane.  Small world.

I walked over to say hi and he looked a little surprised.  If either of us prodded a little bit in our conversation, we would have figured out that we were in the same group (he just joined).

I was not surprised about how nice and cool he was on the plane once I saw that he was in our mastermind.  Birds of a feather flock together.

Find your tribe and stick to it.

John began training with us over the summer after seeing one of our Ripped Dads program’s online.

He took his time in vetting the program, but he was sure glad he decided to go forward.

John won that particular Ripped Dads contest and his since joined on as a full-time member.

John feels better now than he did in his 20’s and 30’s.

Here he is in his own words, take a quick listen, it’ll inspire you.
