Become a Workout Warrior?

In late 2008, early 2009, people would come up to me while I was training and ask if I was doing Crossfit.

I was perplexed because I hadn’t heard of it yet.

But my training and the philosophy of Newell Strength, even in its infancy, was so outside the norm that people wanted to attach a title to it.

So yes, Newell Strength does indeed predate Crossfit.

And normally I don’t say much about them, because I don’t focus on other places.

Yet, it keeps coming up to me, from people that are jumping ship from places like that, that the said trainers at other places don’t understand that most people aren’t training to simply get good at exercising.

To exercise to become a good ‘exerciser’ is stupid.

There has to be a carry over to life: playing with your kids, being able to participate in daily activities that you enjoy, a better mindset, etc.

If you come across these ‘fake experts’ that want you to get good at sweating, tell them to take a hike.

The key with exercise is that you enjoy the process and that you get a sweat, all else falls under those things.

Should You Let Go of Expectations?

I remember all the way back to when I was 7 years old and I began to ponder life and death, mainly death.

In fact, I became obsessed with the philosophical implications that death brought up.  I used to cry every single day after school 2901to my mom because I couldn’t comprehend it.

Point being, I have always pondered the unanswerable questions of life.

Which brings me to expectations.

Should we have expectations?

In my opinion, not if they lay out in the future and not if they are dependent on some other source for the outcome to meet your ‘expectations’.

All disappoint in life will come from some expectation that isn’t met.

Expectations as most think of them lay out in the future.  Which means expectations raise anxiety and fear levels because there is a lack of accurate patterns out in the future.

How about letting go of all expectations except for being present in the moment with whatever it is you are currently doing?  Expect to follow a process, that’s about it.

Discover the 4% Gap OF Self Leadership

A few weeks ago I was finishing up a book and I found out something amazing within that book.

The gap between your current skill set and a new challenge only needs to be 4% beyond your current capabilities to help put you into the state of flow.

It doesn’t guarantee flow.  But the lesson is 4%, not too great, but great enough.

Today is Devon’s Due Date

Well, today is the day. That is, assuming the baby didn’t come early. But I don’t know that as of the time of this writing.

Either way, life will change.

And change is the one thing people fear most, yet it is the one constant in life.

People tell us, #3 is a real game changer. Yes, I am sure it will be, but so was #1 and #2.

All changes in life revolve around relationships when you actually think about it. A new baby, a new marriage, a new colleague, a new client, a new relationship with yourself.

Embrace the change. It’s coming at you either way.

And as far as the baby, I’ll be sure to post something up on social media with name, gender, etc.:)

Are You Asking the Right Question?

Last year, when I was on a panel speaking to other private gym owners; I was asked what was the one trait that had served me most in my career. work

Easy, eternal optimism.

Like anyone else, I have ups and downs and have to constantly work on my mindset, which I why I have studied the brain so much over the years (i.e. Mind Mapping).

Yet, I’ve come to realize that we need a balance of a positive mental attitude and a logical, linear approach.

You get a logical approach to a problem that needs to be solved by asking the right question.

For example, let’s say you are feeling low in energy, a bit too heavy and your joints hurt.  If you are like most, you will assume that the problem is that you are low in energy, too heavy and have joints that hurt.

However, you’d be wrong.  Those are merely symptoms of the problem.  The root problem could be something like trouble in forming discipline, not knowing which habits to work on, and so on.

No matter how good your intentions are, there is nothing worse than running enthusiastically in the wrong direction.

Remember, the thing is not the thing (almost always).

A Tribute to Easy E

I’d be remiss as continue the trip down memory lane of Newell Strength if I didn’t share some footage of Eric.

Eric holds a special place in my heart and was one of the first people to train with me in the old PIT.  He lived in a group home nearby and sadly left this world last year.  I have memories upon memories of this special guy.

I remember going to a very small workshop a few years back.

The speaker, Dr. Rob Gilbert, said very few people ever set goals.

Even fewer write them down.

And an even smaller percentage keep them on their person each day.

The Highest Form of Learning is Unlearning

I was always a decent student, not great, but above average.

Unless the subject matter stimulated me, I didn’t see the point.

It was only after I graduated from college that I realized how much of a passion I had for learning.

I swore I would never read another book again when my commencement ceremony was over, my dad can attest to this.

Then as I kept getting deeper and deeper into my passion of strength training, I realized how much more there was to learn. And I realized that information is not knowledge.

As the years have gone by, I have discarded principles that I thought I would live by the rest of my life. But as I learned, I discarded. Back and forth it went. I kept emptying my cup.
