‘I Quit’

In 2010, I almost moved out to Idaho to work as a strength and conditioning Coach at Boise State.

I was burnt out, one of the many times early on that I almost packed it in.

But in this instance, I am not referring to having almost shutting down Newell Strength.

Nope, I am talking about when I made the decision to quit being a ‘personal trainer’.

Obviously, fitness was my passion and profession, but after having seen the piss poor quality of personal trainers out there, in the land of Globo Gym, I decided I would no longer classify myself as a personal trainer.

Heck, I can bet most of our clients having a better knowledge than 90% of the fake experts out there.

Anyhow, that is when I decided that I was going to BE The Human Strength Expert, of which Coaching was going to be my calling.

A Coach has much more of an influence on mind, body and spirit than any ‘trainer’ does.

That is why I always refer to our team of Coaches as just that, Coaches.

There you have it, the time that I quit being a personal trainer and never looked back.

Yadi: The First Woman Trainee at NS

8 years ago, when I opened the first facility, I cut loose any women that I had been training.

I explained to them that we were only going to train high level athletes and serious men.  It was a certain culture and environment that I wanted to create.

As year one went by, I loosened on that, now that the culture at the time, was cemented.

So, one of our clients brought two of his friends in for a workout, one of which was Yadi, who would become the first official woman member.

That was a long time ago, and she is still with us.

Your 2 Biggest Assets

I remember a long-ago girlfriend asking me how I seemed to always have super amounts of energy.

She always seemed to me zombified unless it was early on during the weekend (because she got to escape her boring life for a few days).

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I always had a way of protecting and cultivating my energy.

Years later, a Coach of mine pointed out that our two biggest assets were our energy and our confidence.

Health is Simple

I recall a presentation that I gave to the teachers of Bridgewater-Raritan school district 10 years or so ago.

At the time, I was still teaching there.

I was asked to present to the BREA on nutrition.

Well, one of the ladies had a question about why she always struggling with diet and exercise.

I told her it was a matter of discipline, a terrible answer and something my young, dumber self believed. I was nothing else if not blunt with her. Hey, we all make mistakes and that was a huge mistake of mine, the way I handled it.

Yet, the point I was trying to get across (I just didn’t understand the brain yet), was that health was simple.

I didn’t say easy, making change in life is one of the hardest things in the world to do.

But once you decide and cut yourself off from all other options, the process is simple.

Move, sweat, eat foods with less than 5 ingredients, drink water and get enough sleep.

How’s that?

The real issue is in first figuring out what is blocking you from taking the first step, and that my friend, is where Mind Mapping comes in to play.

‘I Don’t Have an Ego’

A few weeks ago, someone made a joke about measuring my ego with a tape measure.

To this, I replied, ‘I don’t have an ego’.

Ironic, because as I thought about my joking comeback, that very statement is egotistical.

Listen, we all have an ego.  We just need to be aware of when it is hindering our progress.

You can think of ego in two ways, whatever floats your boat: Edging the Good Out or Edging God Out.

At Newell Strength, one of our main philosophies is that of ‘emptying your cup’.

If you practice emptying out your cup, you will be open to learning and growth.  If your cup remains forever full, there will be no room for growth.

Self awareness is key.

The $50 Burger

Have you ever had a $50 burger?

Well, I have, and let me tell you, it was damn good!

Was it the expectations that made it taste better?  Sure, that’s part of it.

Was it the quality of the meat?  You bet.

Was it the superior experience and service?  Yup, that’s part of what you are paying for.

In fitness, you can’t get the $50 burger while paying the price of a Mickey D’s ¼ pounder.

I can’t tell you how to invest your money, but I can tell you that Newell Strength is the $50 burger.

There’s a lot more that goes into it than the training (although, we are the best at that too, by a long shot).

Just some food for thought.

Member Showcase: From Nervous to SuperWoman

I remember the very first time that Linda walked in to Newell Strength.

She happened to come by during a very busy athlete training session, which meant there were primarily big, strong dudes everywhere.  Add to the fact that Newell Strength is in a warehouse and she simply couldn’t get her head around this place being a fit for her.

She had to think about it.  However, Coach Dana reached out and was able to calm her fears and get her to commit to just 30-days.

Welp, that was 2 years ago.  Linda is one of the great success stories of Newell Strength.  She feels better, has lost a ton of weight and has become an important part of the Newell Strength community.

Are You Stepping Over $100 Bills?

I remember when I did an experiment on myself 10 years ago.

I decided to try and sleep 8 hours per night, which was much more than the 5.5 I had been accustomed to.

Without changing my nutrition or training, I managed to lose 10 pounds of fat in that month. Amazing!

We live in a time where we think more is better, harder is better, faster is better and that success is only a matter of will.

If you are a S.O.S.O.H like most (stressed out, survival oriented, human) and you decide that you ‘want to get into shape’, the answer is not ‘harder’. The answer is to slow down and build some ‘you’ time into your life.

The thing is never THE thing. Your weight gain or lack of weight loss is usually much more than just a simple calorie equation.

Going back to the S.O.S.O.H’s, they normally start to take extreme measures and diet harder and wake up earlier to workout, all the while, not taking time to sleep or just sit and breathe for 10 minutes each day.

They are literally stepping over $100 bills to pick up nickels.

Dear Kyle….

I recently had a close friend tell me that he was going to be giving ‘Keto’ a shot for at least a month.

He said, ‘Hey K, I am doing to do keto, what do you think?’

I held in my chuckle, because he already knew my stance on such approaches.

But I’ll lay it out here, for you benefit.

First, keto is terrible for your health, simply do some research other than listening to what the yenta down the street did a decade ago.  There are tons of peer reviewed research papers out there outlining the negative health consequences (but you won’t hear about them because they don’f fit the narrative).

Second, and more importantly in my mind.  You cannot and will not, form a habit around something so extreme.  And if you can’t form a habit around it….

It won’t work.

When you force an issue or use extreme will power, be sure to know that the pendulum will swing just as far back the other way and there will be consequences.

You are not carb intolerant, that doesn’t exist.  Maybe your sugar cravings have something to do with stress, lack of sleep and keeping good healthy carbs, too low.
