Halloween, The Spookiest Night of the Year

In case you weren’t aware, I absolutely love the Halloween season.

 

It brings back so many memories for me and each year we create new family traditions.  A couple of weeks ago, Braxton was running around the house dressed as Michael Myers and Colt was pretending to be Dr. Loomis (played by Donald Pleasance) from the original Halloween.

 

Devon and I were loving it and yes, its weird, but we are all weird, some of use just embrace it and are more open to it than others.

 

Anyhow, there is plenty of spookiness this time of year, but nothing could be scarier than letting another month go by wishing you had found the perfect fitness program.

Member of the Month: Shadi aka ‘Shotgun Steve’

Shadi came to us at Newell Strength last spring for our Ripped Dads spring contest.

 

Shadi is good buddies with my brother Suga Shane and he had been looking for something that would actually work, and a place where he could feel comfortable and a part of a larger community.

 

Well, that he did.

 

His results are off the charts in such a relatively short period of time and he has found his ‘tribe’.

Boys and Their Tub Shenanigans

Two Fridays ago, Devon had a girls night planned which meant I was on full on dad duty.

 

After playing around in the cul de sac for quite some time, we came down to the front area and I made the boys dinner and we roasted some S’mores.

 

By this time, it was getting a little late and Emma was ready for her bath.  So, I got her in her bath and a short while later, the boys were ready for their bath.

 

In they went.

 

In the meantime, I got Emma in her PJs and began to feed her her bottle in the recliner.

 

This essentially meant that I was trapped.  I could hear the boys right behind me, giggling and making splashes.  I was expecting to see water everywhere once I was done feeding Emma.

 

Well, there was water and a whole lot more.  The boys decided to throw their clothes, toilet paper, towels and anything else they could get their hands on into the full tub.

 

The kicker was the toilet paper.  Wet toilet paper and a tub drain don’t mix.

 

To say I was annoyed would be an understatement.  I had to drain the tub by hand to take the drain apart and clean out the shredded TP.

 

After getting the boys down to bed, I chuckled and remembered one of my favorite ‘isms’; ‘If you’re going to laugh about it later, you mind as well laugh about it now’.

 

Very true.  Devon was teasing me about it all weekend too.  It’s the little moments that make the spice of life.

Fake Fitness Experts Strike Again

I remember 10 years ago when I coined the term ‘the Human Strength Expert’.

 

I didn’t want to be associated with the term personal trainer because of all the phonies out there that used that title.

 

And it remains that way today.  Now, I have simply changed their title to the Fake Fitness Experts.

 

Recently, a friend that shall remain nameless, was telling me about a trainer that was strongly advising him against fasting.

 

My friend replied, ‘But I feel great on it, my blood work has improved and I have lost 25 pounds.’

 

FFE: ‘It’s not good for you.  You need to eat and eat often.’

 

What?!

 

This is blind arrogance, based in the need to feel important and to complicate the non-complex.

 

Fake fitness experts need to have you, the patron, rely on their wily ways in order to feel important and to validate their alphabet soup certifications.

 

All my certifications are sitting in a cardboard box next to me in the shed as I write this, waiting to be burned in my fire pit.

 

They mean diddly.

 

Beware the Fake Fitness Experts this Halloween week, they are scarier than any Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees that you’ll come across.

Did the Joker Use Fasting?

A few weeks ago, Suzy Homemaker and I went to see the Joker.

 

I thought it was excellent, Suzy was a bit freaked out by it.

 

One thing that really stood out to me was how lean Joaquin Phoenix got for his role.

 

He was skin and bone.

 

And it got me thinking if he fasted for his role.

 

I don’t know for certain, but I am guessing he did.

 

Not that you are getting ready for a movie role, but fasting can be used in so many different ways for so many different purposes, but most of all, it can be done years on end, which means it’s not a diet.

 

Just something to think about.

The Seeds of Newell Strength

When I look back at videos from the beginnings of Newell Strength, its a bit surreal.

 

I remember using my time on my lunch breaks to visualize what it has now become.

 

At the time, I didn’t know the HOW, but I knew the mission.

 

Now, I often picture and visualize the next phases, but I am better at stopping to smell the roses and enjoy the days individually.

 

Anyhow, take a look at the original stand alone facility before it actually opened for business.

Are You the Worn Out Lumberjack?

There was once a big, husky lumberjack.

 

The lumberjack loved what he did and he did it with superior efficiency.  If there were trees to clear, he cleared them, on time, every time.

 

There was no challenge to big.

 

But, about 10 years into his career, he started to become lethargic, and felt burnout.  One day, a younger, newer, smaller lumberjack noticed and asked him what was the matter.

 

The older lumberjack explained how he had lost his feel and passion and everything was now a struggle.

 

To which the younger lumberjack replied, ‘Well, have you tried sharpening your axe?’

 

Bam! That hit home, square between the eyes.

Winning the Small Moments

Two weeks ago, Brax and I went on a guy’s errand night.

 

First, we went to pick up some firewood and wouldn’t you know it, the son of my buddy CJ was dressed in his Marine’s uniform because had just gotten back from training.

 

Brax loves army guys and he was ecstatic!  He talked about it all the way until we got to our next destination in New Brunswick, at a warehouse to pick up a new dryer.

 

The guy gave him a $20 tip after we loaded it into the truck!

 

He told me all about the multitude of army guys he was going to buy with his new found money on the way home.

 

It was a simple trip, but full of wins and memories.

 

Memories are often made in the little moments, the ones that you don’t expect much from.

 

Stop waiting, start BEING.
