The Reason MJ is the GOAT

About a month ago, a 10 part docu series about Michael Jordan’s last championship season wrapped up.

It brought back a lot of memories for me because I was an avid fan back then of the NBA.

Once MJ retired, I appreciated his greatness even more because you realized just how dominant he was.

It is clear in the series about how competitive he was and how he wanted to win at all costs.

Some of our former high school and college athletes keep in touch with me on a regular basis and they said that after watching it, it was apparent that he wasn’t a great mentor and things of that nature.

I said, ‘Guys, he wasn’t trying to be a great mentor.  Usually great mentors in sports aren’t the best players.  Jordan had a sole purpose of winning, no matter what.’

They saw my point and I think anyone that played with him can say that they became better in all aspects of life because of being around such a dominant and winning mindset.

To me, it will never be equaled, which is the reason no one else can ever be considered the greatest of all time (GOAT).

How can you start making your mindset just a little bit better?

How Do You Challenge Yourself?

When you are a student of life and you sit back and observe human nature, you will notice that most people choose not to challenge themselves.

We accept it because it’s just what the majority of people do.

The people that do challenge themselves and make things harder on themselves are the ones that stand out.

I remember when I was 8 and 9 years old, playing Little League Baseball.

My parents doctored my birth certificate so I would play up a level in age.  What?

Well, that made it harder for me.  They wanted to challenge me and it worked.  To most people, you’d think of lowering your age to make it easier.

Are you used to taking the path of least resistance?

If so, how can you challenge yourself this week to go head first into the area of greatest resistance?

She Dropped 22 Pounds and 3 Inches!!

Nicole entered an application for the first ever Panda Challenge back in early March, before the world turned upside down.

Nicole was familiar with our unconventional approach as she was a former, long-time member.

You can listen for yourself in this short video, but what she did in 45 short days was amazing and inspirational!

She lost 3 inches on her waist and 22 pounds!  Better yet, her visceral fat, the fat that surrounds your organs (a marker of stress and dangerous predictor of future disease) went down 5 whole points!

Take a quick look and get inspired!

It’s Time For You to Look the Dragon in the Eye

In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I discuss the concept of examining your true fears, looking the dragon in the eye and not backing down.

The thought process in this episode is interesting as it was pretty much when I decided we were going to open the gym on 5/18, despite the fear on multiple levels.

You Have to Have Difficult Conversations in Life

Two weeks ago, Peaches, long-time friend and Newell Strength employee, reached out to me to see if we could have an open dialogue about the George Floyd incident and the racial divide that exists in the country right now.

In that meeting, it was Peaches, myself and Aliyah, another long time friend, former member and Newell Strength Coach.

They, as two black women, wanted to get my perspective and ask questions.

It was about an hour and a half long, very thought provoking and we all walked away with better understanding.  They asked me uncomfortable questions and I asked them uncomfortable questions.

I could have toed the line and walked back once I knew things would get uncomfortable, but then nothing would ever progress.  I told them I had to ask them some uncomfortable questions that a lot of white people want to ask but have fear of being attacked if they ask them.  They were totally cool with it which I appreciated greatly.

Now, they know more and I know more.

If you don’t get tough and ask uncomfortable questions, you’ll never have higher levels of clarity and that means no true progress can ever be made.

If someone knows why you are asking a question, they will not be in threat mode.

Start asking some clarity questions in your relationships and watch how your path unfolds before you.

Fear Attracts Like Energy

Over the past month, I have been reviewing and going over my notes from the book, Conversations with God.

The book examines energy and fear and such.

One of the 3 laws in the book is that fear attracts like energy.

Huh?

People don’t realize that their thoughts are magnetic and have literal energy frequencies.

Ever wonder why some people seem to have a black cloud following them around?

Your thoughts lead to your actions and your words.  The clearest example that I have thought of recently about words having energy is music.

Notice how your favorite song makes you feel or how angry music can make you angry and change your mood.

If your dominant thought is one of fear, be mindful of it and then begin to change your inner dialogue.

Breakthrough for Brax

About two weeks ago, we were at our good friend’s beach house.  It’s one of our favorite places to BE.

It is amazing to watch the relationships with Brax, Tank and Emma evolve with our dear friends.  And Devon and I know that it takes a village to raise a child.

Watching Brax learn from Sweet Lou in the pool was amazing.  Brax rapidly progressed from Friday night until Sunday afternoon.

Much, much quicker than an adult can learn anything.

Part of the reason is youth and a, ripe brain.  But the other part is that Braxton is so endlessly curious.  He is self-competitive.

He asks a ton of questions, he tries something, then evaluates and adds on the next skill.  In this case, it was jumping in the pool with no life jacket, staying underwater for up to 10 seconds, searching the bottom of the pool for toys, etc.

It was amazing to watch and I was as proud as a dad could be.

What did I learn from Brax?  Simply to always be endlessly curious and to be better than I was prior (prior day, prior week, prior year and on).

Your Path is Your Path

Over the past few months, something has become even more abundantly clear to me than it was prior.

We all have our own lessons and own path to walk in this life.  We are all here to experience life in a different way.

My path is not worse or better than your path.  It’s just different.

This means that we will not agree on a lot of stuff and that’s okay.  If you are here to learn algebra and I am here to learn biology 101, not too much will align.  It’s not supposed to.

Listen and learn from others.  You might get a different point of view to add to your path.

Afterall, the teacher will appear when the student is ready.

Leaders Are Inquisitive

In today’s episode, I explore the concept of leadership and asking questions.

By nature, I am a skeptic.  This is at the root of one of my  personal life philosophies of ‘doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing’.

I may be wrong, but at least I ask questions.  You can take a listen to today’s episode here: https://unlockingyourinnerstrength.libsyn.com/leaders-are-inquisitive

Mental Toughness Monday: I Challenge You

A week ago, when I was going for my Monday morning weighted vest walk, I was pondering what to talk about in my Monday video.

Sometimes toughness can be taught and conveyed as force and pushing yourself.  Sometimes that is appropriate.

Then there are times when toughness is simply choosing the path less traveled.

I challenge you this week to have a focal point for your attention when you start getting caught up in the fear and divisiveness that seems to be around every corner during these trying times.

I want that focal point to be something positive, something you have control over, someone you love, something you are grateful for.

How is that toughness?  Because, your thoughts are a habit.  Habits are hard to override, especially thoughts, because our brain is hardwired for the negative, it’s a survival mechanism.

So that’s my challenge to you this week.  Focus on something great in life everytime the fear goblin tries to rear his ugly head.
