Member of the Month for Hillsborough: Johnny Firley

Johnny was February’s member of the month for Hillsborough.

 

He joined us over a year ago and man, does he put in some work!

 

Johnny was used to going to the big box gyms, aka Globo Gym, and as he put it, it got stale.

 

Enthusiasm started to wane and therefore results started to plateau (there’s a lesson for life right there).

Go All In

The Average American Lives Only…

A few weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the boys about how many remaining days I had left based on projections.

 

The average American lives 28,470 days and chances are, if you are reading this, you are probably at, near or past the halfway point.

 

No, it’s not morbid to think about.

 

You must live with some sense of urgency.  In fact, today is Suzy’s birthday (aka Devon), which marks the passage of another year for her.

 

Something I’ve challenged Suzy to do is to make a list of 12 habits for this next year and implement one per month.  In essence, she will stack monthly habits on top of the previous month, leaving her with 12 new behaviors come next April Fool’s Day.

 

Now, imagine if she did this each year.  Heck, imagine if you did this each year!  In ten years, you’d have 120 new habits that can dramatically alter the course of your life!

 

Life is about growth.

 

Growth makes us happy.

 

Therefore, life is about being in a state of happiness as much as possible.

 

Start making that list.

WitchCraft in the Back of Devon’s Car

This July, Devon and I are expecting our 3rd child.  And as with both boys, we aren’t going to find out until the baby pops out of the oven.

But a few Saturday’s ago, we went to dinner with some good friend’s of our and Devon and Kim got to talking and Kim said she would do a test that works 100% of the time with a piece of Devon’s hair and wedding ring.

So, after dinner, we are outside and Devon is laying down in her trunk and Kim performed some witchcraft.

I was laughing, as was my buddy Stretch.

And the ring definitely gave a clear answer, now we will just have to wait to see if it was correct.  (No, I am not going to tell you the outcome).

Life is about having fun and laughing every chance you get.  As simple as that was to do this test, its something we will all remember forever.  You know, ‘I remember when….’

Create memories and laugh often.

This ties in nicely to yesterday’s email, refer back if you didn’t read it.

The Real Secret of Life

4 year ago, at a conference, I heard an Alan Watts video for the first time.

And my mind was blown.

In fact, I still listen to the 2 minute video every day.

Here is a snippet from that speech:

“This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” -Alan Watts

Life is a game and games are meant to be played.

Ponder this today.

Member of the Month: Crystal Sheng

Crystal was the Flemington member of the month for February.

Crystal and her husband Scott were amongst the founding members in Flemington, actually having contacted us a few months prior to opening about wanting to train at Newell Strength.

Crystal has a ton of positive energy and is an inspiration to many women in the fact that she has focused on gaining muscle and strength.  Muscle is the fountain of youth and most people simply focus on losing, losing, losing.  But Crystal, being lean already, didn’t rest on her achievements, instead, she focused on building her strength.

She is a joy to Coach in her workouts.

Plastic Surgery in the Gym

I remember the first time I was able to connect my mind and muscles of my back side back in high school.

It was a pretty awesome feeling being able to feel the muscles of my back working, rather than just moving weight to move weight.

And as truth would have it, many people neglect the muscles on the posterior of their body because they can’t see them and therefore the mind-muscle connection is less.

Some people go out and get plastic surgery to look younger and that’s cool. But I recommend training the muscles of youth to stay young, look young and have better posture. Giving yourself your own ‘lift’ if you will.

Beware of the Fake Experts

A few weeks ago, a fake expert butted their way in to the conservation a gentleman was trying to have with me.

And as fake fitness experts are apt to do, they start spewing advice that is unwarranted and not asked for.

That is mistake number one.

Anyhow, it got me thinking about some of the ‘concepts’ you’ll hear from fake fitness experts.  If you know these, you’ll be able to spot them a mile away and save yourself the hassle.

Fake fitness experts will say thing like:

  • You need to do more cardio. But only do it on a treadmill or elliptical because they are somehow magical.
  • Beware of carbs, they are the devil’s child.
  • In fact, give KETO a shot, it’ll give you the jump start you need.
  • If you do enough sit ups, your belly will being to shrink.
  • Your training isn’t supposed to be fun or engaging, it supposed to be tough and monotonous.
  • You should eat many, small, frequent meals. And no matter what you do, never eat right around bed time.  If you do, you will risk serious physical side effects.

Man, this list could probably go on for 10 pages, but that’s enough to get you started.

Is It Really the Number on the Scale?

I remember when Devon was pregnant with Colt two year ago.  My weight climbed alongside hers.

And while the body comp measures showed it wasn’t fat gain, it didn’t matter.  I got all the way up to 260 pounds, which is a bit on the heavier side for me.

My clothes became tight and fitting into a pair of pants was a process.

You know the feeling when:

-You reach up to grab something and your shirt lifts to show your midsection

-You feel like a stuffed sausage in your pants

-You just feel bloated and too big

Well, that’s what I felt at that time.  I resolved to become more comfortable.  And it just so happens that that would wind up equating to dropping 25 pounds on the scale.

At that point in my life, it was about feeling more comfortable.  Don’t set out to lose weight, just to lose weight.  What’s the point behind it?

Afterall, the number on the scale is just a lag indicator, it shouldn’t lead your efforts.

Member Showcase: Stacey Lee

Stacey first reach out to us in the fall of 2018.  In fact, she was one of the first 20 or so people that had reach out about our new location in Flemington.

She had her initial consult all set and then, she got injured, running.  She had to cancel.

99% of the time when something like this happens, we never hear from the person again, despite our best efforts.  They simply become a ghost.

Well, Stacey was different.  She did reach back out when she was all healed.  And since that time, she has been able to make awesome progress while balancing her duties as a teacher and Coach.

Not only that, but she has begun a serious mental transformation alongside her physical transformation.  She is a student that is ready and willing to learn.
