Member Showcase: Mike Lombardi

Mike started with us a little over a year ago after the urging of his sister, Nina.

Mike was committed and consistent, but something changed when he became a father to his little girl, Nola.

Yup, now he was on a mission. He wasn’t satisfied and realized that he wanted to be around for as long as possible and in as great a shape as possible for Nola.

Since he made that decision, he is down 20 pounds, gained over 5 pounds of muscle and he is in the sweet spot with his nutrition strategy and plan.

Here is a short video of Mike if you’d like to hear it in his own words and see him in action.

Keep being a role model for Nola and all the other dads out there Mike!

The Creepy Cemetery

Allow me to pick up where we left off yesterday.

After sharing a gelato, Suzy wanted to stroll the quaint little town of Neshanic.

So, we went up and around the bend, only to discover an abandoned complex. Jackpot! I love that type of stuff.

As we were approaching one of the buildings to look around, we noticed what seemed to be a cemetary. Obviously that had a stronger pull. We went in.

It was hard to read most of the headstones because they were so old. But we did make out that one held the remains of a lady born in 1767! That’s over 250 years ago!

A bunch of generations have passed since that lady passed. What remains of her? Not much. Yet, death is our greatest teacher. We are only here for a slice of life, we are fortunate enough to be able to experience that little slice.

You don’t have forever, you only have now.

P.S-We left once some odd noises began to spook Suzy. There was definitely someone back there as we heard a voice or two along with some rattling. I’ll go back to explore a little more by myself.

Suzy Get Spoiled

Two Fridays ago, we had a nice date night planned.

We had the sitter all lined up, we had a nice little cozy restaurant to go to and a movie date the local winery right after dinner.

We were having some good conversation when the urge to pee hit me, so I excused myself from the table and as I was getting up, my elbow struck my wine glass.

In an instant, Suzy Homemaker was soaked in red wine.

We cleaned up the spilt mess and then excused herself to go dry off.

It was in that moment that I knew what happened next would determine how the rest of the night would go. Would Suzy react and be annoyed? She had the reason to be.

Or would she respond.

She chose the latter (response is a choice, reaction is not). Suzy came back to the table and was joking about the situation. We even had a nice banter going on with the table next to us about it.

Dinner ran long and we weren’t in a rush. No hurries and no worries.

We didn’t try to speed dinner, we simply enjoyed it and realized the winery would have to wait until a later date.

In every situation, take a breath before moving, or take two if you need it.

There is a BIG difference between reaction and response.

Discover Your Accountability

A few weeks ago I was working out when I ran into Action Jackson. He had mentioned a recent episode of the podcast that he had listened to, which prompted me to ask him what else he’d like to hear about.

AJ said, ‘Accountability’.

Thus, the topic of today’s episode is how to discover your own accountability. What is accountability? Why do we need it? What’s the best way to develop it?

In today’s episode, I answer all these questions and more. You can listen to the episode here: http://kylenewell.com/inner-strength-podcast/

The Mysterious Package

Early last week, Devon had returned a cork board that was damaged. It was a part of the bathroom project she’s been working on at Newell Strength.

Amazon told her to just drop it in the new box and ship it out.

A nuisance, but simple enough.

Then, on Thursday, the package arrived back at our house. Strange…

I went out to check it out and realized that it came back to us because the return label was never attached. Devon had dropped that off along with the cork board.

The point being, we can only get where we want to go if we know what direction to head in. Once you find that direction, just keep plodding along.

The process is the goal and the goal is the process.

Member Showcase: Cortney Pollara

Cortney’s husband, Magnus, pariticipated in our Ripped Dads contest a few years ago.  He did great and loved the experience but ultimately his hectic work schedule forced him to train a little closer to home.

So, we were happy to see that when one of our woman’s programs opened up, he referred Cortney.

Now, as you can see from the video, Cortney doesn’t have any weight to lose.  Yet, she’s totally transformed her mindset.  When she began, she had suffered from chronic anxiety and now, well…I’ll let her tell you herself.

The New Stephen King Book

The main book I was reading last Friday on the beach was the new Stephen King book, The Outsider.

Being the horror buff that I am, it’s hard for me to believe that I’ve never read one of his books.  I’ve seen the movies but that’s about it.

Even though I’ve never read one of his books, I am and have been a huge fan of his art.  He is prolific and one of the best of all time.

He wrote his first novel, Carrie, while working full-time in the public school system up in New England.

How’d he do it?  Simple, he wrote any chance he had.  He didn’t wait for the perfect time.

In his book, On Writing, he talks about he writes 2,500 words per day, no matter what.  Some people will say, ‘Yeah, of course he can do that, he’s Stephen King.’

Whereas the more appropriate way to look at it would be, ‘He’s Stephen King because he writes 2,500 words per day.’

Just some food for thought.

How Not to Apply Sunscreen

Last Friday, Devon and I went down to the Jersey Shore to celebrate our 7th anniversary.

Tank and Munchie were spoken for, so it was a nice, quiet day.

We sat there with our books for hours, with our feet in the sand and the ocean splashing.

We broke for lunch at [2:30] and it was at that point that I realized my feet were beginning to burn.

But, it wasn’t just my feet, it was some zig zag lines on my legs and chest and even my belly button.

Devon was laughing about how I had applied the sunscreen, as was I.

It’s been a while since I’ve had to lather up to block the sun, so I was pretty rusty.

I should’ve paid more attention to detail.  Or I could have asked for help.

Either one of those things or a combination of the two work for all areas of life.

Take your time and ask others to help when you need to.

How to Master Your Time, Take 2

Just the other week, Coach Dan from Newell Strength told me had just listened to one of the first podcasts that I ever recorded on time and energy management.

The message was loud and clear because just a little bit earlier that morning I was thinking I should record a newer version of that same topic.

In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I give you the secrets of how I manage my energy and time in the hopes of you being able to apply one or two of things to your own life.

It’s all about knowing what quadrant you are living in.

You can listen to the episode here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/unlocking-your-inner-strength/id1138596023?mt=2

Who Are You Racing With?

I first read the Ghandi quote, ‘There is more to life than simply increasing its speed’ about 10 years ago.

It resonated with me.

I often sit back and observe the way people operate with frantic energy, as if each thing and each day is a race.  Frantic energy will only lead to more frantic energy.

Calm and serene energy will produce a calm and serene mind, which will make life have a beautiful flow.

We need to realize that life isn’t a race, it’s a marathon that doesn’t end.

And when it is final, you know what that means, right?

It’s time to start pondering these types of thoughts, each day that goes by is a day we cannot get back.
