Change is the Only Constant in Your Life

About 12 years ago, I learned from my Coach, Scott Abel, at the time, that the one thing people fear most is change, yet change is the only constant in life.  

 

Isn’t that ironic?

 

Yet, it’s important for you to remember that the change isn’t random, it’s driven. 

 

Everything that happens in the universe follows the law of cause and effect.  Nothing escapes this law.

Are You Aware of Your Internal Drive?

A few years ago, I heard Professor first explain the concept of the apple tree in the middle of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lesson.  

 

‘The apple seed wants to become an apple.  It has an innate intelligence.  It must become the tree, sprout branches and so forth until it can manifest as an apple.’

 

When we examine a tree, we understand that concept.  

 

Now, transpose that into your life.  What is your internal drive? You are becoming something and that something is an outward manifestation of some underlying power.

 

That power is the attention you have on a day in and day out basis as well as what you are envisioning for your life.  

 

Your life has its own ‘apple’ but unlike the apple tree, you have choices.

 

But you can only create the ability that you know you are the creator.

 

You may have to read this a few times to internalize it.

Driving on the Edge of the World

Two years ago, when we did our first New Hampshire trip, we took a drive up to the top of Mount Washington.  

My senses were heightened and my palms were sweaty.  

Yes, I let my nerves get to me.  

Most of the 8 mile drive to the 6200 foot summit is driven on a very narrow road with no guardrails.  

One little slip and that could be it.  

This time around, we did it once again and I was much calmer.  I focused on my breathing and I had already been exposed to this stress.

In life, a repeated exposure to a stressor builds up resistance to that stress.  

The only time FEAR is appropriate is when your body thinks your literal life could potentially be at stake (which is rarely a reality).  

A few things to take away from this one.

Finally, We Found Her

4 weeks ago, on our final hike in New Hampshire, we were just getting started when Mateena ran off.  

No big deal, they run off a little bit on our hikes but always come right back.  No doubt she was chasing something or smelled food.  

Anyhow, after about 10 minutes, Devon started to get a little nervous.  

We split up, along with Frank and Alise, our friends that were with us and eventually found her.  She had gone back to the river near where we parked (she’s a smart girl).

Anyhow, it made me think of the preciousness of life.  Lately I’ve been focusing on her and Dax more, a dog’s life is much easier to grasp as far as the finiteness.  

When I picked Mateena up from our breeder 7 years ago, my first thought was about how fast her life would go before our very eyes, 10-12 years if we are lucky.  

Every day you must think about the finite life that is presented to you.  Urgency helps you live more fully.  It’s not morbid, it’s to keep you from just going through the motions.

 

Sometimes losing your pup helps put things into perspective for you.

Here’s How I Did It

A week and a half ago, I was looking forward to leg day with my buddies Frank and the Wolverine.  

It’s an unusually tough workout as legs should be and it is nostalgic for me since it brings back memories of my competition days.  

Anyhow, we’ve been finishing with a set of 4 minute squats (to put this in perspective, it’s rare to see anyone do even a 30 second set of squats) after a whole bunch of other tough stuff.  

Well, I planted the seed in my brain a few days prior to see if I could do the entire set with only nasal breathing, no gasping for air through my mouth.  

And wouldn’t you know it, I was able to do it.  How?  Well, I’ve been practicing and learning and realizing the benefits of it.  But what it boils down to is that I simply decided that that was what I was going to do.  

New area of my brain was accessed.

Decide you are going to grow and you will.

Count How Many You Have

This morning, on my weighted vest walk, I was contemplating what to make the Monday morning video about.

And this idea of ‘critical thinking’ kept popping into my head.  

Based upon different conversations I’ve been having recently, it’s become more apparent that the ability to think critically is more important than ever.  

It’s a HUGE advantage if you possess this awareness.  

Why do I say awareness?  Because, it takes awareness and setting aside the ego to examine your thought patterns.  Most people don’t critically think because they are either lazy (thinking does take a lot of energy) or because they’ve committed to a certain stance and to examine the other side of that coin might mean they would have to admit they were incorrect.

Listen, I always say, I reserve the right to change my mind at  any moment.  I know that as a voracious student of life (which I hope you are), I am always learning and therefore new information will eventually come along that makes me change your stance.

This is how the Panda Challenge was born and how it is continuing to evolve.

So, do yourself a favor this week and see how many conversations or thoughts you have that are genuinely original.  

The first step to change is self-awareness.

A Bridge Jump on My Birthday

Eleven days ago, we celebrated my 39th birthday.  

It was a great day, started with some solitude time at the river near our house, just thinking and writing.

Right after that, we went over to another local branch of the river and swam some to cool off.  The boys were busy checking out the turtles that were all over the place.

And me, well, I decided that I had to create a new tradition and do a bridge jump into the river on my birthday, which shall be a tradition moving forward.  

It’s only about a 15 foot jump but it’ll get your heart rate going in anticipation.  

But shouldn’t we be seeking out more moments like that regularly?  Isn’t the point of life to have energy, excitement and enthusiasm each day?

Otherwise, in my humble but accurate opinion, what’s the point?

Do You Like Crabs?

3 weeks ago, on our first morning at the Maine beach, Braxton and I took the dogs for a walk in the early morning on the beach.

We happened to run into a lady that told us about ‘crab island’.  It was a spot that was visible only during the low tides, but where kids could find hundreds of hermit crabs, small lobsters and such.

Well, lucky for us, that is right down where we were taking Dax and Mateena for their walk.  

Later that night, we went back with the family to show them Crab Island (we were at the beach during the day but crab island was under water at that point). 

Brax and Colty were loving it, they probably caught 60 crabs that night.  We made them put them back and we continued to go there throughout the week.

It was one of the highlights of their week in Maine.

Most people don’t see the beauty in being so close to critters and nature, but Devon and I see it daily as the kids can’t get over the coolness of it all.

Maybe that’s because they are seeing through eyes that are seeing things for the first time.

Amazing By These Two Little Guys

4 weeks ago, we did some really intense hikes up in New Hampshire.  

These would have been tough hikes for adults only, but we had the 3 kids with us, plus Dax and Mateena.  

The one hike was taking us on a journey to a 200-foot waterfall in the middle of the forest.  It was quite a sight to see.

But to get there, we had to go 2500 feet up and 3 miles in, which made it a 6 mile hike all around.  

The amazing thing is that Brax and Colt did the entire hike barefoot!!!  It wasn’t planned that way, it just kind of happened.  

My good friend Frank, whom we vacationed with, was there with his family (2 kids) as well and he couldn’t believe it.  

These little guys have me in constant amazement and awe.  And it got me thinking a lot more about foot strength and health (coming this fall at Newell Strength).
