Kicking the Tyre Kicker to the Curb

Just last week, a new client was telling me about how much she loved the culture and community at Newell Strength.

And yes, I agreed, that is one of our top things that separates us from any other place out there.

But it didn’t happen by accident.

We’ve worked hard to repel the tyre kickers and negative nellies.

In one rare instance that a guy faked his way in, we eventually let him walk.

We simply decided that we didn’t want him infecting our culture.  When he came to me with some complaints, I smiled and said, ‘I don’t think you are a good fit for us and to be honest, we kept thinking we could help you but that was a mistake on my part’.

When I say help, I mean to help him become a more compassionate and self-aware person.

He wanted me to beg him to stay, ha, that ain’t wasn’t happening.

It was only a matter of time before the energy of the community at Newell Strength forced him out.

And there have been others that have been told NO from day one, that we wouldn’t be having them join us because of their attitudes.

We are not for everyone and we prefer it that way.

So know that here, you will always be surrounded by a positive, family-like community.

‘I Quit’

In 2010, I almost moved out to Idaho to work as a strength and conditioning Coach at Boise State.

I was burnt out, one of the many times early on that I almost packed it in.

But in this instance, I am not referring to having almost shutting down Newell Strength.

Nope, I am talking about when I made the decision to quit being a ‘personal trainer’.

Obviously, fitness was my passion and profession, but after having seen the piss poor quality of personal trainers out there, in the land of Globo Gym, I decided I would no longer classify myself as a personal trainer.

Heck, I can bet most of our clients having a better knowledge than 90% of the fake experts out there.

Anyhow, that is when I decided that I was going to BE The Human Strength Expert, of which Coaching was going to be my calling.

A Coach has much more of an influence on mind, body and spirit than any ‘trainer’ does.

That is why I always refer to our team of Coaches as just that, Coaches.

There you have it, the time that I quit being a personal trainer and never looked back.

Health is Simple

I recall a presentation that I gave to the teachers of Bridgewater-Raritan school district 10 years or so ago.

At the time, I was still teaching there.

I was asked to present to the BREA on nutrition.

Well, one of the ladies had a question about why she always struggling with diet and exercise.

I told her it was a matter of discipline, a terrible answer and something my young, dumber self believed. I was nothing else if not blunt with her. Hey, we all make mistakes and that was a huge mistake of mine, the way I handled it.

Yet, the point I was trying to get across (I just didn’t understand the brain yet), was that health was simple.

I didn’t say easy, making change in life is one of the hardest things in the world to do.

But once you decide and cut yourself off from all other options, the process is simple.

Move, sweat, eat foods with less than 5 ingredients, drink water and get enough sleep.

How’s that?

The real issue is in first figuring out what is blocking you from taking the first step, and that my friend, is where Mind Mapping comes in to play.

How Are a Great Novel and Diet Similar?

I remember the hardest diet I ever did (and I’ve done many).  It was when I was 17 years old.

I won’t go into the nitty details but…

A diet is similar to a great novel in that in both cases, you can’t wait to get to the end.

Think about that for a moment.

This is why ‘diets’ don’t work.  I’ll argue that to my grave.

Your brain doesn’t like nor will it form a habit around willpower based thoughts.

Willpower basically means doing sh** that you don’t want to be doing.

Sitting in a Box Collecting Dust

When I work out in my office shed each week, I have to walk by a few crates of old certifications and a few college diplomas.

Yup, they sit there, collecting dust.

Just like the few remaining bodybuilding trophies I have left (I gave most of them away).

Certifications and degrees aren’t worth the paper they are printed on unless you have taken the knowledge and made them your own.

Having an alphabet soup following your name impresses no one, nor should you be impressed with fake fitness experts that are all about their certifications.

What you should be looking for is someone that can simplify the process.  Because as the level of simplicity goes up, so does the effectiveness of the plan.

Way Back Wednesday: Big Ben

As we continue down this memory lane for the next few weeks, I came across this video of Big Ben, who was one of the top HS tennis players in the state at the time.

You can see the white racks still in boxes in the background and you can see Drew, one of the first ever clients of Newell Strength way back in the days of the PIT and who would go on to be the second Coach after Gabe Lincoln at Newell Strength.

Drew now has his own training business down in New Orleans.

Man, time flies.

Great memories though.

Things Don’t Happen to You, They Happen for You

I just finished writing another entry in the book to Braxton and Colton.

The message was that things don’t happen to you, they happen for you.

The quality of your life will come down to the quality of the questions you ask.

The quality of the questions you ask is your ability to reframe any situation.

When things happen to you, you are the victim.

When you believe that everything happens for you, you are the VICTOR!
