What Do You Mean ‘Don’t Ice’ Your Injury?

6 years ago, I came across some compelling research on the healing process for the human body.

 

And it went against the grain, just like so many things that we teach at Newell Strength.

 

What’s that you ask?

 

It was the idea of not icing an injury.  I could go on to why that is, but that’s not the point of this piece.

 

The point is that we are all affected by cognitive dissonance to some degree; this idea that we are so entrenched in a belief that we cannot fathom the other side and refuse to see the other side.

 

Well, if there’s one thing I am good at, it is ‘emptying my cup’ and examining all sides of an issue, implementing and experimenting and then making my own conclusions.  With my second knee injury, I didn’t ice one time, in fact, I did the opposite: heat, compression, movement and so forth.

 

I had a record recovery and my doc was shocked.

 

Last week, a good buddy texted me an article from a big publication about ‘How we should no longer ice an injury’. He said, ‘Look at that, you were right.’

 

In life, don’t be married to too many things, keep an open mind and be like water, test stuff out, teach it to learn it and continue to grow.

How to Turn Lemons into Lemonade

As far back as I can remember, I had an  optimistic mindset.  I  would always look for the positive in situations and in other people.

 

I took this way of thinking and ran with it.  In fact, one of the top skills in life and one that I teach whenever I get a chance is the skill of reframing.

 

In every situation, there is a positive.  No matter how bad it seems in the time being.

Great Goals Attract

Have you ever had a friend set such a big goal that you became excited just by being exposed to it?

 

Almost as if your first thought were something like, ‘They’re crazy, who do they think they are?’

 

And then it transitions to inspiring you?

 

There’s a reason for this way of thought.  When you first feel resistance towards another person’s BIG goals, it’s because it exposes your limited way of thinking at the current moment.

 

Once you get over that, it will magnetize you because great goals attract and put off great energy, while mediocre goals attract little energy.

 

So imagine what having no goals does….

Your Decision is Proven When…

I always love it when another Friday the 13th rolls around.  It brings me right back to Halloween mindset, even though we are nearly in winter.

 

Anyhow, one of the things that I have been blessed with is the ability to make quick decisions.  Who knows why this is, I am sure it has to do with nature and nurture, but right or wrong, I don’t let fear stop me very often.

 

And because of this, I often act with speed, which is a huge advantage in the game of life, especially in business.

 

Think about it, everyone wants to know that their decision is the right one, so they wait and wait and wait, hoping that all the lights turn green before they put the pedal to the metal.

 

But you know something?

 

The only time we can be certain that our decision was the correct one is after we have made the decision.

 

Either way, you win, because you took action learned.  Even if it was ‘incorrect’, you still win.

 

Because remember, you only lost if you don’t know why you lost.

Pay Peanuts, Get Monkeys

There are many ‘copy-cat’ gyms that have come and gone over the years.

 

They make the mistake of thinking that what makes Newell Strength special and unique is the technical side of what we do.

 

And, yes, I will put our Coaches up against any crew of Coaches anywhere, they are, afterall, the most knowledgeable Coaches in the industry; it’s even more so about the community that has been created at Newell Strength.

 

That’s not something that can be copied.

 

There’s a reason the copycats charge much less than us, because you get way less.  In life, you get what you pay for.  If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Resistance is There to Make You Stronger

When I first started lifting weights, I didn’t take it seriously.  I was lifting because my football Coach made us.

 

Then, a few years later, going into my junior year of high school, I bought in.  I did it because I wanted to do it.

 

I would spend hours, literally, in the gym.  There were times that I couldn’t lift my arms for days.

 

But you know what? I got stronger.

 

You get bigger and stronger when you lift weights that your body hasn’t been exposed to before.

 

And in life, you face resistance and obstacles to make your mind and spirit stronger.  Don’t shy away from these obstacles.

 

They are there to help you grow.

Monday Mindset: Think Small

A few years ago I hired one of the most unique minds in the world to Coach me for 12 full months.

 

A lot of what I learned is top-secret, jedi-mind type of stuff.

 

But one of the things that I can share with you is the concept of ‘think small’.  When the Zen-Master first told me this, I thought it was very odd.

 

Then, he explained it to me.

 

‘Thinking BIG kills desire.  When you think small, you can take that small step, your brain doesn’t get overwhelmed.’

 

This tied in perfectly to Mind Map principles.  It clicked.

 

So many people THINK BIG, this time of year.  How’s that work out for them?  What if for your resolution you said something like, ‘I want to lose just one pound to start.  If I do that, I have succeeded.’

 

See how the mindset shift is completely different?

 

Think small this year and take one step at a time.

Friday Finisher: ‘I Dare and I Do’

There are many mornings and nights that I spend outside, reading and contemplating my life.

 

I get caught up in trying to figure out the ‘how’, which leads to freeze mode and anxiety at times.

 

Then, I rewind myself and realize as long as I know my why and the objective, the how will figure itself out.  Now, it doesn’t just happen, it takes tremendous amounts of energy to create and build anything in life.

 

But don’t get too caught up in the how.  You will figure it out one step at a time.

 

When I do these rewind sessions, I realize it’s about my mindset, do I believe in myself or not?  And one of the simplest mantras I  use is: ‘I can and I will.  I dare and I do!’

 

Breathe and repeat until it becomes a part of you.  Write it down and carry it  with you.

 

It’s a simple thing, but so simple that most people  will choose to overlook it.
