Rhino’s Don’t Feel Gnats

Rhino’s Don’t Feel Gnats

Have you ever been stopped dead in your tracks by judgment?

I am sure the answer is yes.  The brain is very sensitive to judgment for survival reasons.

Here’s how it works:  your brain perceives slights and judgments.  The animal brain perceives it as you might get ‘kicked out’ of the tribe and your chance for survival goes way down.

(By the way, this is THE reason people in general are so petrified of public speaking).

Whenever you are trying to actually create something in your life, the swamp creatures will come out to attack.  It’s human nature.

And if you worried about everyone that said something mean or nasty about you, you would never ever be able to succeed.

Do you know why Rhino’s don’t feel gnats?  It’s because they have thick skin…

What other people think of you is none of your business.

If you expect that any time you are passing someone on the ladder of life they WILL bark at you, then you can formulate your response ahead of time.

Don’t give them any energy of yours.  Simply move on and realize that if you are trying to please everyone, you will wind up pleasing nobody.

Your self-image is everything.  Believe in what you are doing.

December’s workshop is going to be like nothing you’ve ever experienced.  I was going to do it on the 14th, but I need a little extra time to prepare for this one.  This one will be limited to 7 people max.  Keep an eye later this week for the bullet points of what we will be doing at this ‘Davinci’ workshop.

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Most people greatly overestimate what they can do in a few months but greatly underestimate what they can do in 5 years.

Most people’s ideas never make it out of their head into reality.

Most ideas go to the graveyard.

But it’s easy to be enthusiastic about a new idea.  Novelty is the greatest aphrodisiac.

I’ve come across a lot of people that ask me for advice or coaching on start-ups of some sort or another and you’d be shocked at how few people stick with their idea past the two or three month mark.

They fail to realize that all overnight successes take 12 years (at least!).

You aren’t most people though.  I want you to be different.

The first year we held our Thanksgiving morning workout, we had 4 people show up.

The second year (I wasn’t there because I had just ruptured my patellar tendon for a second time) there were 14 people.

The third year we had 60 people.

And just this past week, we had 100 people at the TG charity workout!

If more people would develop ‘sticktoitiveness’, they would realize all their dreams.

I want you to think long and hard about a 5 year projection for yourself and commit to it this coming year.  Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

You might surprise yourself, but you won’t surprise me because I already believe in you.

We still have a few openings in our next edition of Ripped Dads which begins next week.  If you are looking to get back on track or maybe your husband is looking to get back on track, then you should check out the application here:

Picking Ticks Off In the Middle of the Night

Picking Ticks Off In the Middle of the Night

For as long as I can remember, I have been super-sensitive to touch.

It’s as if my spatial awareness was hyped-up on some juice.  And, it’s only gotten more pronounced as the years have gone on.

Not to say that I have a super power, but I often sense a thing moving before it moves.

A good example would be yesterday when my deodorant (not anti-perspirant, but that’s another article) fell out of my cabinet in the bathroom.

I was brushing my teeth with my left hand, sensed the deodorant falling and caught it before it hit the sink with my right hand.

Might not sound that odd, but it happens to me all the time.  I like to think I have a little bit of ‘spidey-sense’.

You would think that being so sensitive to my surroundings would potentially make it hard for me to sleep, but it doesn’t.

I sleep like a rock, usually only waking up for a crying Braxton (if Devon nudges me) or a few minutes before my alarm goes off.

Except when my spidey-sense kicks in during sleep.

About a month ago, I woke up from a deep sleep in a pitch black room, reached down to my leg with my thumb and pointer and plucked a tick clean off of me. It wasn’t embedded yet, it was simply crawling on my leg.

What’s the point of all this ‘weirdness’?

The point is that if you develop any of your skills or senses to a maximum degree, the brain will take over and your subconscious will do a lot of the thought for you.

Think about how this can relate to any of your routines or ways of thinking.

Plan out the next day the night before.  Know what your morning routine is every single morning.  Let the brain do it’s thing.

It’s the most amazing thing on earth if you allow it to be.

You know what else would be amazing?  Giving someone you love the gift of Newell Strength for their NY resolution.  You can start by getting them a 3-week test drive here:

President Reagan’s Favorite Story . . .

President Reagan’s Favorite Story . . .

There were eight year old twins.

By the time they got to be eight years old, they were driving their parents crazy because one of the twins was down, depressed and negative, and the other one was positive, up and energized all the time.

Well, the parents finally decided to bring them to a child psychologist.

After a few sessions, the psychologist decided to do a little experiment.

So, when they came in, he took the negative boy and brought him downstairs, and in the room was ice cream, cake, candy, video games, rocking horses, everything an eight year old would want.

He said to the eight year old boy, “Why don’t you stay here and play while I meet with your brother?”

The kid walked off, sat in the corner, and sucked on his thumb.

The psychologist went upstairs and got the positive kid.

He brought him down the hall to this huge gymnasium, but there weren’t any basketballs and baskets.

There was just this huge mountain of horse manure that almost went to the ceiling.

He said, “Son, why don’t you stay here and play for half an hour while I meet with your brother?”

Almost instantly, the positive kid starting running up the mountain, rolling down the mountain, and within a few minutes, he was a total mess.

A half an hour later, the psychologist went down to see the negative boy.

He was still sitting in the corner sucking on his thumb.

They psychologist said, “Why don’t you have some ice cream, candy or cake?” “I might get sick.” “Why don’t you get up on the rocking horse?” “I might fall down and get hurt.” “Why don’t you play with the video games?” “I don’t know how.” “Well, why don’t you follow me? You might learn something.”

So, he went back upstairs to the gym, and the positive brother was still running up the mountain, rolling down.

The manure was in his hair, down his shirt.

It was a total mess.

When he saw the psychologist, he came running over all excited.

The psychologist said, “What in the world are you doing?”

The positive kid said, “Well, I figured with all this horse manure, there must be a pony somewhere.”

You see, it’s all about perspective.

Happiness is so simple and is really the purpose of all that we aim for in life.

It’s Sunday and that means I wrote you an article.  I know this one will have a big impact on you.

If you like it, please share it with a friend:)

Lessons from Picking Up a 300-Pound Zilla

Lessons from Picking Up a 300-Pound Zilla

Yes, I have one more story for ya from last weekend’s Poppzilla wedding.

The Zilla is one of the jolliest men you will ever meet.

Check that, he is one of the world’s true gentle-giants.

The Zilla used to weigh more than 400 pounds and I have seen him lift weights in the gym that were super-human.

However, over 5 years ago, the Zilla decided to make a transformation.  And since that time, he has lost and kept off over 100 pounds!

But….he is still a big boy.  Normally at weddings when we scheme to pick up the groom for his victory dance, we don’t have to account for their weight, but most grooms aren’t living giants (the Zilla has size 22 feet).

Well, we corralled him and about 6 of us managed to get him up in the air.  He was loving every second of it as he should have been.  It was his night, his hour.

Now, I should note that earlier that morning, I had already pulled my hammy pretty good while doing heavy lunges. Lucky for me, my adrenaline was going so I was able to mask the pain.

The other two or three guys on my side did help to get him up, but once up, the Zilla was squarely sitting on my right shoulder.

My ‘teammates’ started going through the  motions and acting like they were supporting him, but as each heave into the air as we danced with him would attest, I could tell that I was the lone one supporting him on our side.

I motioned to set him down because this wasn’t going to end pretty.  As we went to set  him down, my right thumb got bent straight backwards, which is still making it tough to type for me.

It was a fun but physically exhausting few minutes lifting him up.

Even though the guys on my side started slacking, there is no way I could have gotten him up in the air by myself.

Sometimes, you need a supporting team to accomplish the extraordinary.

You don’t have to go it alone in life.  Surround yourself by 5 people that you admire and respect.  You will become the average of the five people you hang out with the most in life.

Lucky for you, we have (not to brag, this is not about me) an extraordinary team at Newell Strength that is ready and willing to be your supporting team heading into the New Year.

You can start by applying for a spot in our 3-WTD here:

I’ll be back tomorrow with a super cool article about happiness.

Yoda, Einstein and Seinfeld

Yoda, Einstein and Seinfeld

What do these 3 characters have in common?

They all had a life philosophy to live by.

Yes, I know this is the second time this week we are talking about philosophy.

And in case you are behind, on Wednesday I wrote about my training philosophies.

Well, today my good friend, I am going to let you in on some of my life’s philosophies.

You know, as each year goes by, I get more and more confident.  Not arrogant, but SELF-confident.  After some reflection, I realize that is because my life philosophies are really becoming more ingrained and taking ‘root’.

I cannot state the importance of having a list of principals you live by.

I will not list them all here, but I will be covering this in much more detail in an upcoming podcast (you do realize I now have a podcast, right?:)).

Without further ado:

  • My mind must be nurtured each day through learning new things and connection with a higher power.  A weak mind equals a weak life.
  • I get final say of who I let into my life.  If someone drains me, they get banned from my life.  And no, this doesn’t have to be a confrontation.  I just cut off my life’s energy from them leeching off it anymore. I know who’s opinions to value and whose don’t.
  • Time is the most precious thing that I have, I must protect is like my life depends on it, because it does.
  • I cannot reason with emotion.  It’s a losing proposition.  Don’t offer up ‘coaching’ in any relationship in your life if the person doesn’t ask you for it.
  • Nearly any skill can be learned through repetition.  And repetition is what separates the successful from the tire-kickers.  Enthusiasm is easy, endurance is the hard part.

Wo-MAN, that is therapeutic just writing it out once again.  Give it a try.  I could go on forever, but my workout with the Wolverine is calling my name.

Be different.  Get clear on your philosophy.

You Have Megatons to be Thankful For

You Have Megatons to be Thankful For

I am hoping that you get to read this before this great holiday of traditions and festivities begin.

You can feel the vibration levels of the people around you rising on days like this.

Everyone is in a better mood.

Be present today, BE.

It’s so easy for us to live for a future that doesn’t exist yet or to get caught up in past turmoil and grudges.  But both of those ‘places’ aren’t real.  They are projections of the mind.

Now is a GIFT, that’s why it’s called the present:)

Take some deep breathes today and take some mental pictures of the moments you find yourself being present in the moment.

In life, when we get down and overwhelmed, it is usually because we have become too SELF-focused.  How can you we change that?

You can make a list of all that you are grateful for in life.  And yes my friend, you have MEGAtons to be grateful for.

You have your vision, both literal and spiritual.

You have people that love you.

You have use of your hands and feet.

You have true freedom.

You have a nice bed to sleep in.

You are the WORLD to someone else.

Let’s remember as head into this holiday season that life is precious, to be lived in the moment and be mindful when your mind starts to leave you behind.

Line up that body, your brain and your spirit like 3 lasers ready to shoot through any obstacle that gets in it’s way.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My Philosophies of Strength Training

My Philosophies of Strength Training

I am always crafting my life’s philosophy.

In fact, one of my principals is that you MUST have a life philosophy of sorts if you are to make an impact on the world.

Well, just as in life, I also have training philosophies.  And if you have been following along for a number of years, you are probably familiar with them.

But just as a refresher and hopefully a breathe of fresh air, here are my 4 strength training philosophies:

  • You must continually apply new stress to the body.  This includes but is not limited to reps, weight, rest times, different organization of your workouts and new types of training.
  • You should train with peripheral heart action (PHA) in mind.  If you aren’t sweating and in ‘oxygen debt’, then you aren’t training as hard as you need to be.  You can do this by full body training, head to toe.  This is 1000 times better than any piece of cardio equipment you can go on.
  • 99% of people should be training movements, not muscles.  The body can push, pull, squat, extend the hips, carry stuff and resist movement (core training).  If you train all the movements, you will 100% hit all of the 600+ muscles in the body.  If you try to isolate on machines and will old-school bodybuilding programs, your body and core will eventually retaliate against you.
  • If at all possible, I believe everyone would be better served by training in the morning.  Yes, training later on is better than not training.  But if you do some simple reality math, you will realize that nearly everyone is in a better mood after working out.  There is real brain science behind this, which I won’t go into here.  If we know this to be true, why not get this mood boosting effect first thing in the morning so it carries over to the rest of the day?

There you have it.  There are more, but those are what came to my mind first.

If one of the goals you have for the new year is to become better at mastering your time, then you are gonna want to check out my new Time Mastery Manual.  In honor of Black Friday, you can get it for more than 50% off here:

It will be mailed to you and you will get the audio link of the live workshop I did on this back in October.

What Do I have to Lose….Besides my Pride?

What Do I have to Lose….Besides my Pride?

This past Saturday, one of my good friends, Poppzilla, the eating champ, got married.

It was cool to hang with a bunch of the old crew again.  I saw guys that I haven’t seen in probably 10 years or so.  Fun times.

Well, when old friends get together, old shenanigans tend to come out.

I used to be a master instigator, I guess that kind of goes along with being a storyteller.  I stopped with my instigating ways a long time ago because I realized that although harmless, they were powerful.

But, on Saturday night, I had to scratch that itch.  I saw a willing victim, Ahman (Aboo-Haha, we added this part on).  Aboo is an aspiring bodybuilder and he has come quite a long way in the sport.

And knowing what I know about Aboo and bodybuilders, I could not resist the temptation to have him perform a pushup challenge out on the dance floor.

I pitched it to Aboo as, ‘If you can do 100 pushups in a row, then me, along with others from the old crew, will pay you $10 each.  You have absolutely nothing to lose.’

He thought about it and pondered for a few minutes back and forth and I continued to reiterate that he had a lot to gain and nothing to lose.

So, five minutes laters, we had a circle around him on the dance floor and the DJ counting the reps over the loudspeaker.

Aboo got to 67 before dying out.  Not bad, but not 100 either.  He didn’t get the money.  We all had a laugh.  Aboo had nothing to lose until he realized that what he did put on the line was his self-image.

Self-image is EVERYTHING in life.  You can only achieve things in life that are on par with your self-image.  I am amazed that so few people ever realize this ‘secret’.

Aboo had a lot to lose and you could see it in his body language after the challenge was over.

He will recover, no doubt.  He and I along with everyone else will remember it as a fun highlight of the Zilla’s wedding.

On a macro scale though, it was a good lesson for him and others who picked up on it.

Self-image is very easy to deflate but all it takes is a little persistent consistency to build it up to world class levels as well.

If you don’t ever think about it, it will be low and negative, that’s the way the brain is wired.

However, look out for the rare person that works on their self-image every single day.  They are the people that will change the world.

P.S-Black Friday is fast approaching, which means you will be in shopping mode very soon.  If anyone in your life is planning a massive transformation in 2017, then you might want to consider getting them a 6 or 12-week nutrition coaching package with Dana for 15% off.  Can’t beat that.  If you are interested, shoot me an email. Only two of the puppies are going to be available.

Why Goals and Will-power Won’t Help you Succeed

Why Goals and Will-power Won’t Help you Succeed

‘Your systems will help to protect your dreams’.

That’s what Dax Moy said to me last May out in Las Vegas.

I was fortunate that I was one of just 4 people that got to learn from Dax for 3 straight days.

But out of all that I learned from him that week, the systems quote from above is the ONE big thing that stuck in my mind.

After sending out an article last Sunday, it seems that many of the loyal NS fans loved it, so ‘that’ will now get turned into a system.

You can read the entire article here:

And in that article, you will find out why my mind is changing about goal setting and a cool trick or two about using will-power and not using will-power.

WARNING: If you apply what you read in the article, your life can and will change dramatically….

Just in case you read too fast and missed the link above, here it is:
