It’s Time For You to Look the Dragon in the Eye

In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I discuss the concept of examining your true fears, looking the dragon in the eye and not backing down.

The thought process in this episode is interesting as it was pretty much when I decided we were going to open the gym on 5/18, despite the fear on multiple levels.

P.S-I am taking people for the next Panda Challenge, it begins June 22nd.  Based on the first two challenges, the average inches lost around the waist in just 45 days is 3”!!!! If you are interested in one of the remaining 7 spots, go here: https://hillsborough.newellstrength.com/panda_diet

P.P.S-After much consideration, we are pushing our Fat Shredder to September.  We will be able to run it better and people will be ready for it.  We don’t want anyone to miss out.  Details will come out as it gets closer.

Leaders Are Inquisitive

In today’s episode, I explore the concept of leadership and asking questions.

By nature, I am a skeptic.  This is at the root of one of my  personal life philosophies of ‘doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing’.

I may be wrong, but at least I ask questions.  You can take a listen to today’s episode here: https://unlockingyourinnerstrength.libsyn.com/leaders-are-inquisitive

A Real Life Hero

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I wanted to reflect on my living grandfather, Leo.

Yes, he is the same man that I watched Raw Deal with in yesterday’s email.

Leo is a world war 2 vet, and as you know, there aren’t many of them left.  He is still sharp as ever, still strong as ever and a real inspiration for me.

His dad, my great grandfather, was an Italian Immigrant that earned his U.S. citizenship by fighting in WW1.

I always reflect on my grandfather as we celebrate both Memorial Day and 4th of July.  He fought for our freedoms and way of life.

Thank you Pa!

And if there’s anyone in your life that sacrificed to give us freedom that you know of, please give them a big thank you from me.

Happy  Memorial Day weekend!

Amazingly it All Started With This

9 years ago, I made today’s video.

It’s about how I began and yes, it began with a simple exercise band.

Take a listen for 3 minutes and try to gain a spark of inspiration.

(Don’t mind my eyes, they  were a bit puffy because of allergies).

Enjoy! https://youtu.be/wa61Mmg9mRs

My Success Principles

Nine years ago, I made this video while driving to jury duty.

In it, I talk about my success principles.  The interesting thing is that they remain true today.

And I can trace my path back to following these principles day in and day out for the past decade.

See if there is anything that  you can pick up from this short clip, enjoy!

The Most Beautiful Quote of All-Time

While down at the creek on the same day as when we had the puking incident (see yesterday’s email), I was talking to Brax.

As I’ve mentioned, he loves all-things army, navy, marines, etc.

And as dad’s do, I’ve been painting the vision for him of how great he is going to be as a soldier one day.  Yes, we fantasize about him being a SEAL (Devon disagrees).

Well, I was asking him about what he pictures and all that and he looks at me and says, ‘Dad, I just want to be a kid and stay with my family.’

Floored!!!

The wisdom of kids is so beautiful and in that case he was my teacher.

I think we can all ponder that for a few seconds and see how beautiful it was.

Think Differently- Kyle

P.S.-If you’d like to work with us and have the best Coaching in the world, before this craziness is behind us, then check out the opportunity below.  The first round of clients are crushing it and they’d be the first to tell you  that it’s the best investment you  could make in yourself, particularly given the current climate…

1-Last week I opened the doors to the second Panda Challenge, which will be starting May 11th.  10 of the 12 spots are already taken and it looks like this will be the trend going forward for this Challenge as it’s one of a kind and dare I say, the most effective ‘Nutrition Challenge’ in the world (mark my words, you heard it here first). If you’d like to find out more info and at least throw your name in the ring for me to decide if you’re a good fit, then go here: https://hillsborough.newellstrength.com/step_1

Check it Out!

Back in early March, Cori Burd came in to interview for one of our 6 sweepstakes spots.

He was timid and lacked confidence.

Believe me, he’d agree with that assessment.

Well, he was selected.

And because of circumstance and the unforeseen global lockdown, the others had to put their experience on hold.

Cori though, he didn’t flinch.  In fact, he ramped up his efforts.

You have two types during this.

Those that turned into ‘Homer Simpson’ and those that saw it as an opportunity to challenge and grow into a superior version of themselves.

Cori chose the latter.

The man is down damn near 40 pounds.  He could have waited and began after things were back to normal.

But Cori knew that if you wait until all the lights are green to GO, then you’ll die without ever having really lived.

Let Cori’s inspired action inspire you to grow.

1- The Fat Shredder is coming!  Realistically it’ll probably start at some point in the backside of May and run until the 4th of July weekend.  Here’s all you have to do for now: start thinking of your teammates. Each team will have at least a member, non-member and one woman (teams of 3).  It’s gonna be epic and just what we all need at that time:)

2-I am opening the doors to the second Panda Challenge, which will be starting within the next 3 weeks.  The first 12 ‘Panda’s’ are crushing it and dare I say, all 12 are on track to hit their 45-day goals! Yes, I only take 12 because of the high level of Coaching each client receives.  5 of the spots are already taken from people that just missed the cut for the first Panda Challenge. If you’d like to find out more info and at least throw your name in the ring for me to decide if you’re a good fit, then go here: https://hillsborough.newellstrength.com/step_1

Discover the Power of Your Relationships

Each day this week I will be bringing one of the five areas of growth to get and learn from this situation.  Today’s topic is about relationships….

In case you didn’t realize it before, it should be pretty obvious that we, as human beings, are social creatures.

When I do Mind Mapping lessons and sessions, I always teach about the mammalian part of the brain.

This part of our brain is wired for connection and bonding.  It is also hyper-sensitive to judgment because of how much we crave to fit in with a tribe or pack.

With all that is going on, many of the relationships that you cherish have been put on hold.  At least in terms of face to face interaction.

I know, we can hop on Zoom or social media, but that is not nearly the same.  Yes, it’s better than nothing, but not the same.

Now, you have plenty of time to focus on those within your 4 walls.  You know, your spouse, your kids, the dogs. Those that mean everything to you but that we are normally too busy to actually give undivided focus to.  Well, NOW is that time.

Where your attention goes, energy flows.  Put the damn phone down and listen and talk and laugh.

Pick up the phone and reach out to someone that you don’t call often enough.  I know for me, this has been a blessing because I now talk to my mom a few times per week whereas in the past I wouldn’t make time for a phone call or I would wait until I heard from her.

Write a letter.  Yes, handwritten.  It’s genuine and has a much different impact than email or text (there are studies that show how the brain actually lights up way differently when someone receives something physical in the mail rather than email).

I just wrote my dad a cursive, one-page letter last week and it was awesome.  I got to tell him things I normally don’t tell him and he was greatly appreciative.  Taking the time to sit down and write and put it in a stamped envelope is one of the greatest investments you can make in any relationship.

Don’t take your friendships for granted again.  EVER. It’s one thing to say that, but it’s another to act it out.

The easiest thing to do when this is all said and done will be to revert back to the norm.  Don’t let it happen.

Relationships are the spice of life, they are what make life worth living.

It’s Time to Reinvent Yourself

A month ago, right before all this chaos hit us, I was down in Orlando, Florida for a mastermind.

And as luck would have it, one of my old friends and legends in the world of fitness, Thomas Plummer, was a guest speaker on the first day.

I was fortunate enough to be invited out to dinner with Thom and a few others and then we proceeded to share a few beers well into the night.

Thom said a few times throughout the night, ‘Kyle, it’s time for you to reinvent yourself.’  He knows Newell Strength and he knows my story.

That resonated with me.

And then Corona hit us.  Impeccable timing? Coincidence?

I think not.

I am using this time to take the road less traveled and to ponder what he said to me.

Do not come out of this situation unchanged, that would be a complete waste.

Clarity is Power

My personal word for the year is clarity.

Maybe it’s because it has been burned into my brain that a lack of clarity causes the brain and nervous system to go into a state of threat.

But maybe it’s also because I possess self-awareness and I realize that clarity is one of my weaknesses.  And it starts with the self and then that will allow you to provide clarity for those that you lead.

Make no mistake about it, you are a leader.  It may be to your family; it may be to friends or it may also be to an organization.  Leadership requires one to be clear.

I have found as my leadership role grows in my life that the clearer I am on my direction and immutable laws of the life, the better those that I am leading are able to perform.

So why is clarity so important?  Well, Mind Map has taught me that the brain is a pattern recognition machine.  This means that we need prediction then response and repeat.

If there is a lack of a pattern or clarity, we retreat into a reactive state.  And my fellow man, there is a HUGE difference between response and reaction.

I recently finished a great book about General George Patton called Patton on Leadership.  Lucky for you, I have been writing notes like a mad man about my takeaways from the book which I will now share with you.

Some of these directly talk about clarity but most of them don’t. That don’t matter now that you know that clarity is leadership, which by itself is super powerful and will give you a huge advantage over damn near anyone else in life.

‘Winning is a habit, so is losing’:  Ah, one of my favorite words, habit.  All transformation is about habit destruction or formation.  We get used to certain patterns in life and then just tend to go on auto pilot.  The reason that winning in life seems so daunting to most men is because they have been stuck in a pattern of losing for so long.  And from some of my other writings you may remember that one of the most powerful forces in human development is momentum.

‘A leader has to be ahead of his men’:  Think about your family for a minute.  Are you setting the example for them that you wish for them to BE?  Are you preaching health and fitness yet failing to take care of your own self because your schedule is too busy?  Are you preaching to them to go after their dreams with gusto, yet you are sitting in a cubicle like a caged rat?  Get out in front of those that you lead.  Lead by example.

‘A leader is a man who can adapt principles to circumstances’:  Not sure if you caught it above when I mentioned ‘immutable laws’.  These are you guiding principles in your life.  So the first step in being able to adapt your principles is to know your principles.  I’ll give you an example of one of my mine; I am in responsible for everything that happens to me in my life.  Sound crazy?  Maybe, but it also gives me ultimate power over my life.  And when something goes wrong or a mistake happens, I apply the principle which allows me to learn and course correct.

‘Truly important decisions, those involving core principles, don’t require much time for thought’:  Again, you can see the importance of having clarity about your core principles in life.  Most people don’t have core principles, or if they do, it’s what they believe they should have as core principles according to society.  Think for yourself!  When you know your immutable laws, you can make lightening quick decisions regarding things like parenting, financials, fun and moral decisions.

‘Most leaders become leaders because they are uncommon and they know it’:  Dizzy Dean said ‘If you done it, it ain’t bragging’.  I done it.  By that, I mean that I am a leader.  I actually know this more from a little reverse engineering because I know that I am uncommon and a different breed.  But that’s not because I was given some genetic gift.  I simply chose to access my gift and instill discipline in my life to do the things that need to be done on a daily basis.  I have taught people my time mastery principles, my morning routine, my learning routines and I know that very few of them actually implement those things.  We have the same knowledge and information, yet it’s the consistent action that separates us.  Be uncommon and you will become a leader by default.

‘Every man who hears you speak must know what you want.  You can be wrong, but never be doubt when you speak!  Any doubt or fear in your voice and the troops can feel it.  Another thing, never give a command in a seated position (even on the phone)’:  Man, this is powerful.  When dealing with your wife, be a MAN.  Make a decision and go with it, even if it turns out to be wrong.  Doubt crushes forward momentum.  Men are supposed to be decision makers for the household and for the rest of the people they lead.  Followers are allowed to have doubt, but not leaders.  You know how you can make those that follow you have less fear?  By you acting with extreme confidence and having no doubt in your voice.

‘As Patton saw it, part of command is an ability to narrow focus, excluding from your field of vision those aspects of reality that would very sensibly create ‘fear’ in an average person.  If this is stupidity, embrace it wholeheartedly’:  This quote is directly related to clarity even though it doesn’t mention the word.  When I was building Newell Strength, I made some crazy decisions when you looked at it from an outsider’s perspective.  I wasn’t doing this out of carelessness. Nope.  I was acting out of absolute clarity on my vision and what I knew Newell Strength could become.  When I resigned from my cushy teaching job, I was told that I was nuts, stupid and short-sighted.  It didn’t matter, but it would have if I didn’t develop the ability to have such a  tightly narrowed focus on my dream.

‘Advancement comes from habitually doing more than you are asked to do’:  Be clear on what is expected of you and then do more than that consistently.  There will always be another rung on the ladder to go up for someone that does this.  I can tell you that from my role at Newell Strength.  Those coaches and personnel that have done this have had a steady climb and created the roles of their career dreams.  Those that haven’t, well, they floundered and got fired.

‘A genuine career requires a focused commitment of life energy’:  Are you just going through the motions?  Do you have a job that means nothing to you?  And if so, are you willing to chase the career that you want?  If so, you can only do that by focusing your energy like a laser on something that mentally engages you, day in and day out.  And you can only do this by focusing not necessarily on WHAT you are doing, but WHOM you are being.

‘A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds-Emerson’:  Remember how I said one of my immutable laws in life was to realize that I am responsible for everything that happens in my life?  Well shame on you if you don’tJ.  That law has allowed me to be able to look in the mirror of life, over and over, and say, ‘Kyle, what you are doing isn’t working, learn from it and try a different way or find a teacher that can teach you a different way’.  Those men that become so married to their ideas of the ways things should be done are the ones that suffer from little minds and probably little you know what’s too.

‘Leadership is about balancing timing with available resources.  Opportunities are easily lost by waiting for perfect conditions’.  Perfect conditions rarely if ever exist, but you wouldn’t know that unless you were clear about timing.  You need to know when to strike.  Some of this is intuition and gut feelings but it always comes down to knowing what available resources you have on hand, be it finances or people.

This book was awesome and I suggest you read it.  If not, just know that to be a leader and to BE a true man, you must bring clarity to each day.  Clarity to lead yourself first which will then allow you to lead those that are following you to the best of your abilities.

Now go get it tattooed on your left pec so you don’t forget it.
