The Reason MJ is the GOAT

About a month ago, a 10 part docu series about Michael Jordan’s last championship season wrapped up. 

It brought back a lot of memories for me because I was an avid fan back then of the NBA.  

Once MJ retired, I appreciated his greatness even more because you realized just how dominant he was.

It is clear in the series about how competitive he was and how he wanted to win at all costs. 

Some of our former high school and college athletes keep in touch with me on a regular basis and they said that after watching it, it was apparent that he wasn’t a great mentor and things of that nature. 

I said, ‘Guys, he wasn’t trying to be a great mentor.  Usually great mentors in sports aren’t the best players.  Jordan had a sole purpose of winning, no matter what.’

They saw my point and I think anyone that played with him can say that they became better in all aspects of life because of being around such a dominant and winning mindset.

To me, it will never be equaled, which is the reason no one else can ever be considered the greatest of all time (GOAT).

How can you start making your mindset just a little bit better?

I Should’ve Saw this Coming

2 weekends ago, I was down at the creek with the boys.

We were trying to catch frogs in between setting up little plastic army guys for battle.  

Tank and Munch wanted to take a break and go on the tire swing.  And man, we were having a blast.  I was twisting it up so they could do the ‘tornado’ as they were calling it.  They would get wound up and then I would let it unwind, while they were swinging about the water.

Well, after about 20 minutes, Tank wanted to get off.  I grabbed him and then he proceeded to puke all over the rocks.  

Yes, I should’ve seen it coming, but it didn’t phase him, he’s a tough kid.

Sometimes too much of a good thing is no good.  The key is in finding that sweet spot.

How to Gain Clarity in Uncertain Times

One month ago, I saw exactly what the root cause of the problem of the Corona Quarantine was going to be for most people.

Am I Nostradamus?  

Nope,  but I do have a deep understanding of the human brain and how it operates.  

Our brain craves clarity.  

It can only move forward with prediction and response, otherwise it goes into threat mode and usually freezes up.

Well, in today’s episode, that’s exactly what I discuss.

1- The Fat Shredder is coming!  Realistically it’ll probably start at some point in the backside of May and run until the 4th of July weekend.  Here’s all you have to do for now: start thinking of your teammates. Each team will have at least a member, non-member and one woman (teams of 3).  It’s gonna be epic and just what we all need at that time:) 

 

2-I am opening the doors to the second Panda Challenge, which will be starting within the next 3 weeks.  The first 12 ‘Panda’s’ are crushing it and dare I say, all 12 are on track to hit their 45-day goals! Yes, I only take 12 because of the high level of Coaching each client receives.  5 of the spots are already taken from people that just missed the cut for the first Panda Challenge. Finding Simplicity in Complexity

Last week, I started back at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, after a long lay off because of numerous ligament tears that I have been letting ‘settle’.

I went back for a few reasons: I love to learn and the Professor has a great way of Teaching, I enjoy the camaraderie and I think a Dad should be able to take a hit and get choked out without panicking.

Anyhow, I think back to a lesson the Professor told us a while back that was this:  If the process is too simple, he gets bored and won’t pursue it.

The ‘it’ can be anything.

‘Find satisfaction in the complexity’, he said.

When we achieve or conquer something that is complex, we get a big rush of dopamine, which sends us looking for the next thing to conquer.  We need things that are complex in order for us to grow.

How boring would your life be if everything was a breeze and there was no struggle?

The key to doing the complex is in breaking it down until you have the next simple step in front of you.

You Gotta Feel Some Type of Way

I remember back when I was really diving head first into the self-development world, as a young physical education teacher.

At that time, I was often drained since I was training for bodybuilding shows, teaching, getting my masters and launching Newell Strength from the ground floor.

Being tired, meant that it would be easy for the fatigue to set my mindset.  But I realized that I had a choice to either feel down or great.

So, I would often spend a minute in front of the mirror, just smiling at myself, knowing that it would send positive chemicals to my brain.

Your physiology holds the key to helping you change your state almost instantaneously and you need to work on the mindset of being able to choose how your days are going to feel.

Why feel down when you have the option of feeling up?

‘I Quit’

In 2010, I almost moved out to Idaho to work as a strength and conditioning Coach at Boise State.

I was burnt out, one of the many times early on that I almost packed it in.

But in this instance, I am not referring to having almost shutting down Newell Strength.

Nope, I am talking about when I made the decision to quit being a ‘personal trainer’.

Obviously, fitness was my passion and profession, but after having seen the piss poor quality of personal trainers out there, in the land of Globo Gym, I decided I would no longer classify myself as a personal trainer.

Heck, I can bet most of our clients having a better knowledge than 90% of the fake experts out there.

Anyhow, that is when I decided that I was going to BE The Human Strength Expert, of which Coaching was going to be my calling.

A Coach has much more of an influence on mind, body and spirit than any ‘trainer’ does.

That is why I always refer to our team of Coaches as just that, Coaches.

There you have it, the time that I quit being a personal trainer and never looked back.

Member Showcase: Linda DeFeo

I remember a few years ago when Linda first walked into Newell Strength.

Coach Dana was giving her the tour and there just happened to be a football team we were training and about 10 other men training simultaneously.

It was just one of those afternoons.

Needless to say, Linda was a bit intimidated and wasn’t sure that it was the right fit.

She thought about it for a few nights and then reached back out to Dana.  Linda figured she would try it out for 30 days with our risk-free trial and if she didn’t enjoy the experience, then that would be that.

Yup, My Parents Did This

I remember when I was 9 years old, playing on the Yankees in-town Little League team.

It was the playoffs and the Coach pulled me aside and said I wasn’t going to be able to play.

It turned out, that there was some issue with my birth certificate.

My parents had doctored it….

Now, I know what you are thinking….cheaters!  Trying to gain an edge and make sure I was the best.

Well, they were trying to make me my best.

Yet, they doctored it to show I was a year older, not a year younger.  Yes, read that again.

My parents wanted me playing against bigger and better competition.  Perhaps that is where my inner drive started.  I have always sought out a challenge, tried to take on the impossibly hard.

And my parents couldn’t have given me a better gift.

Think about how nowadays, everyone gets a trophy.  This was in the days before all that garbage started, before teaching kids about competition became a thing of the past.

Obviously, this courageous act by my parents had a BIG impact on me, because I remember it clear as day, 30 years later.

We need to challenge those we are trying to lead and teach, rather than trying to make it as easy as possible for them.

You’ve Changed….

Back in 2007, when I started the business of Newell Strength, I used to drive around to people’s homes in my little Hyundai Elantra with some exercise bands, a pair of dumbells and one old medicine ball.

 

A year later, my parents were gracious enough to allow me to build a 200 square foot studio in their basement, known as the PIT.

 

A couple of years later, I expanded that to 600 square feet.

 

And then I opened the first stand alone facility.

 

I used to train only athletes and men.

 

It used to be just me and then me and Gabe Lincoln (our first ever Coach besides me).

 

We used to train all through the winter with the garage doors open.

 

At the time, we achieved what we set out to do.  We created the culture we wanted at that point in life.

 

It’s funny when people tell me that we’ve changed, that I’ve changed, as if it’s somehow a negative.  I sure hope I’ve changed and that Newell Strength has changed.

 

In life, you can either adapt and grow or stay the same and die off.

 

When you see it like that, it’s obvious which path you should take.

 

So yes, we have changed and will continue to change.  But the mission remains the same: To Inspire People to Transform Their Lives.

 

Think about change and the idea of it in your own life.
