‘I Quit’

In 2010, I almost moved out to Idaho to work as a strength and conditioning Coach at Boise State.

I was burnt out, one of the many times early on that I almost packed it in.

But in this instance, I am not referring to having almost shutting down Newell Strength.

Nope, I am talking about when I made the decision to quit being a ‘personal trainer’.

Obviously, fitness was my passion and profession, but after having seen the piss poor quality of personal trainers out there, in the land of Globo Gym, I decided I would no longer classify myself as a personal trainer.

Heck, I can bet most of our clients having a better knowledge than 90% of the fake experts out there.

Anyhow, that is when I decided that I was going to BE The Human Strength Expert, of which Coaching was going to be my calling.

A Coach has much more of an influence on mind, body and spirit than any ‘trainer’ does.

That is why I always refer to our team of Coaches as just that, Coaches.

There you have it, the time that I quit being a personal trainer and never looked back.

Member Showcase: Linda DeFeo

I remember a few years ago when Linda first walked into Newell Strength.

Coach Dana was giving her the tour and there just happened to be a football team we were training and about 10 other men training simultaneously.

It was just one of those afternoons.

Needless to say, Linda was a bit intimidated and wasn’t sure that it was the right fit.

She thought about it for a few nights and then reached back out to Dana.  Linda figured she would try it out for 30 days with our risk-free trial and if she didn’t enjoy the experience, then that would be that.

Well, she wound up loving the experience and realized that she fit right in.  She has seen Newell Strength evolve just was we’ve been lucky enough to be a part of her transformation.

Yup, My Parents Did This

I remember when I was 9 years old, playing on the Yankees in-town Little League team.

It was the playoffs and the Coach pulled me aside and said I wasn’t going to be able to play.

It turned out, that there was some issue with my birth certificate.

My parents had doctored it….

Now, I know what you are thinking….cheaters!  Trying to gain an edge and make sure I was the best.

Well, they were trying to make me my best.

Yet, they doctored it to show I was a year older, not a year younger.  Yes, read that again.

My parents wanted me playing against bigger and better competition.  Perhaps that is where my inner drive started.  I have always sought out a challenge, tried to take on the impossibly hard.

And my parents couldn’t have given me a better gift.

Think about how nowadays, everyone gets a trophy.  This was in the days before all that garbage started, before teaching kids about competition became a thing of the past.

Obviously, this courageous act by my parents had a BIG impact on me, because I remember it clear as day, 30 years later.

We need to challenge those we are trying to lead and teach, rather than trying to make it as easy as possible for them.

You’ve Changed….

Back in 2007, when I started the business of Newell Strength, I used to drive around to people’s homes in my little Hyundai Elantra with some exercise bands, a pair of dumbells and one old medicine ball.

 

A year later, my parents were gracious enough to allow me to build a 200 square foot studio in their basement, known as the PIT.

 

A couple of years later, I expanded that to 600 square feet.

 

And then I opened the first stand alone facility.

 

I used to train only athletes and men.

 

It used to be just me and then me and Gabe Lincoln (our first ever Coach besides me).

 

We used to train all through the winter with the garage doors open.

 

At the time, we achieved what we set out to do.  We created the culture we wanted at that point in life.

 

It’s funny when people tell me that we’ve changed, that I’ve changed, as if it’s somehow a negative.  I sure hope I’ve changed and that Newell Strength has changed.

 

In life, you can either adapt and grow or stay the same and die off.

 

When you see it like that, it’s obvious which path you should take.

 

So yes, we have changed and will continue to change.  But the mission remains the same: To Inspire People to Transform Their Lives.

 

Think about change and the idea of it in your own life.

Member Showcase: Stacey Lee

Stacey first reach out to us in the fall of 2018.  In fact, she was one of the first 20 or so people that had reach out about our new location in Flemington.

She had her initial consult all set and then, she got injured, running.  She had to cancel.

99% of the time when something like this happens, we never hear from the person again, despite our best efforts.  They simply become a ghost.

Well, Stacey was different.  She did reach back out when she was all healed.  And since that time, she has been able to make awesome progress while balancing her duties as a teacher and Coach.

Not only that, but she has begun a serious mental transformation alongside her physical transformation.  She is a student that is ready and willing to learn.

Alphabet Soup

10 years ago, I was on a quest to become the greatest strength Coach of all time.

I was rapidly investing in courses, Coaches, seminars, books and dvds.

And I wouldn’t change that for anything, it molded me into who I’ve become currently.

It got to the point that I had doctors asking me for advice on things concerning the body (some still do), which is great and I only point that out to tell you the level of knowledge I acquired.

I had some 20-odd letters after my name, the alphabet soup, which included exclusive certifications, secondary schooling and on and on.

I have let all but my master’s degree expire (because once you have that, you have it for good).

Why?

Because they didn’t mean anything.  Over the years, as I matured as a person, I realized that simplifying all that I knew was where the true mastery was.

If you can’t explain concepts to a third grader (with short attention spans, with their level of vocabulary and then having them apply what you taught), then you haven’t mastered it and I would argue that you have a menial understanding of the subject matter.

Be careful of all the ‘fake fitness experts’ out there.  They are a dime a dozen

Your 2 Biggest Assets

I remember a long-ago girlfriend asking me how I seemed to always have super amounts of energy.

She always seemed to me zombified unless it was early on during the weekend (because she got to escape her boring life for a few days).

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I always had a way of protecting and cultivating my energy.

Years later, a Coach of mine pointed out that our two biggest assets were our energy and our confidence.

In today’s episode, I discuss these two assets and what you can do to grow them and protect them.

Discover What Relaxation Can Do For You

Two Thursdays ago, Coach Mike got me a gift, the gift of a float session and Devon made me go, no ifs, ands or buts.

 

I had been fighting this damn virus for quite some time and it was just a signal that my buddy was a bit rundown.

 

So, I went floating and amazingly, later that night, I could feel the sickness finally leaving my body?

 

Was that a coincidence? Ha! Hardly!

 

Relaxing is one of the greatest things you can do for your immune system.  And floating, in my humble but accurate opinion, is one of the most relaxing things one can do.

 

The lesson to take from this is that you can’t always have the pedal to the metal.  Your fitness must be balanced between recovery and stress.

Member Showcase: Jon Pawlowski aka Stretch

Stretch has been associated with Newell Strength just about as long as any member we’ve had.

That’s because we were buddies way back at another globo gym, then we started playing hoops together and so on until he decided he wanted to start working out with me in the PIT.

He is a great role model for other dads out there.  He still plays hoops here and there and he makes a point to get in for at least 3 workouts per week, despite being a busy teacher, Coach and dedicated father and husband.
