You Don’t Have a Mindset Problem

6 years ago, I spent a weekend in a classroom learning from Dax Moy.  The topic was Mind Mapping, something that was calling me to learn and to teach.

 

Little did I know that it would be one of the great learning periods of my life.

 

One of the things that many people don’t know that Dax taught me was the concept of the ‘3 brains’.

 

We are all only taught about the human brain, otherwise known as the mind.  The problem is, you can’t access the mind fully and progressively if there is a deeper ‘brain-set’ problem in the animal brains.

Monday Mindset: Mamba Mentality

A little over two weeks ago, the great Kobe Bryant passed, along with his daughter and 7 others.

 

It is tragic to say the least.

 

It really shook me to the core, I spent a good part of that Sunday night crying.  My love for basketball and my admiration for this guy and my compassion for a fellow father, all boiled into thinking about how he was taken too soon from this earth.

 

But there are higher powers than my mortal mind.  We have to learn from tragedies such as this one.

 

One of the things that inspired me so much about Kobe was his mindset, known as the Mamba Mentality.  He gave us that gift, that torch.  It didn’t matter if you weren’t a basketball player, the Mamba Mentality was about never giving in, never giving up, no matter what.

 

That is part of his legacy.  He gave us that, it’s up to us whether we cement it home.

 

Listen, we all are gonna die.  What gift are you going to leave behind?  And no, you don’t have to be famous to leave a legacy.

How Dare I

12 days ago, Devon was out to work early in the morning.

 

And on the way out, she asked me to be sure to stir her turkey chilli periodically throughout the day.

 

Sure, no problem I told her.

 

Well, 7 or so hours later, she came home.

 

Did I stir the chilli?  Nope, totally slipped my mind.

 

The ingredients cooked, but not the way they should have.  The corn was still sitting right on top.

 

You might have all the knowledge you need.  In fact, I know you do.  Information is not the problem.

 

This issue is in knowing how to put all the right pieces together.

 

That’s where Coaching with a capital C comes in.

You Gotta Feel Some Type of Way

I remember back when I was really diving head first into the self-development world, as a young physical education teacher.

At that time, I was often drained since I was training for bodybuilding shows, teaching, getting my masters and launching Newell Strength from the ground floor.

Being tired, meant that it would be easy for the fatigue to set my mindset.  But I realized that I had a choice to either feel down or great.

So, I would often spend a minute in front of the mirror, just smiling at myself, knowing that it would send positive chemicals to my brain.

Your physiology holds the key to helping you change your state almost instantaneously and you need to work on the mindset of being able to choose how your days are going to feel.

Why feel down when you have the option of feeling up?

Are You a Decision Maker?

I had a Mind Map a month ago with a friend that wanted to improve himself.

 

We got to talking about leadership and he said he wasn’t a leader, he simply punched the clock.

 

Well, well, well….

 

Whether you realize it or not, YOU and you alone are the leader of your life and possibly your family.

 

Leaders make decisions, right or wrong.

 

If they are wrong, they admit it.

 

But they don’t hem and haw and waste valuable head space.

 

People will follow those that have the gall to make decisions.  An inability to make decisions is not attractive to anyone.

 

Start by practicing with the small things such as what you are going to eat or wear and build that muscle from there.

 

That’s leadership 101.

The Benefits of a Flexible ‘Diet’

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a Yankees game with a great friend of mine.

 

He got us box seats and it was quite a treat, all inclusive.

 

The spread was amazing and you better believe I went up 3, maybe four times!

 

And normally during my regular routine week, I don’t have dessert during the week.

 

But this was a special occasion and life is to be enjoyed.

 

Plus, with fasting, I have all the flexibility in the world.  Even if I ‘go off course’, I am not gonna get out of shape with just one meal.

 

With that in mind, I piled up some cookies and put some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right on top.

 

Fitness is to enhance your life, not become your life.  I’ve deprived myself and learned the hard way in the past….

 

Enjoy the special experiences of life and realize that flexibility is key to any long term success.

Member Showcase: Andrew Tina

It’s hard to believe that Andrew recently had his one year anniversary with us at Newell Strength.

 

I remember the exact road I was driving on and time of day when we had our first phone call.  He had a lot of questions and wanted to make sure it was a good fit.

What Do I have in Common With Kobe Bryant?

For years now, at least the past decade, I have been listening to the theme song (Myer’s House) from the original Halloween movie.

Now, this time of year, it really ramps up, to the point where its pretty much constantly playing in my truck and in our house.

In fact, as I write this, it’s playing as my ‘timer’.

Recently, I heard that Kobe Bryant, one of the all time greats, used to listen to this same song before games because it got him in the ‘killer mentality’.

I had to chuckle, because he was practicing Hebb’s Law: that which gets fired together gets wired together.

This song gets my write into creative work mode.
