Day (8)

Calm as a Sleeping Puppy

Two weeks ago, Suzy took Brax over to the BMX track for the first practice run of the season.

Keep in mind, last year, Brax was still racing on his balance bike.

Although, a year from tomorrow is the date that he officially rode a bike without training wheels for the first time (Devon always wonders how I remember specific events and dates like that….).

So now, it was onto the big boy bike on a bigger portion of the track.

Surely he wouldn’t be able to race from the starting gate with the older kids?

Nope, he did it.  Devon reported back to me that he was sizing it all up and when he was ready, he lined up to the starting gate, as calm as a sleeping puppy.

When the gunshot rang and the gate dropped, he propelled down the first hill.

As usual, I learn more from Brax than he does from me on a weekly basis.  The Zen-beginner’s mind is a beautiful thing.

Know What You Want

Throughout the years, I’ve highlighted many of the lessons I’ve learned from Munchie, now it seems that I will be entering the stage of learning from Tank (yes, you read that right).

The past few Sundays, I’ve given Tank a chocolate chip muffin for breakfast.  And wouldn’t you know it, the little dude rips that thing apart, only looking and finding the chocolate chips.

The rest of the muffin is just scraps for him.  It looks like a big mess but he knows what he is after.

The funny thing is, I eat the scraps for dessert in my weekly Sunday night Sundae.

He gets what he wants out of the situation because he knows exactly what he is looking for.

When you have a target, you increase efficiency and dopamine because each step is a part of the process.

Go find what your chocolate chip is.

Breakthrough for Brax

About two weeks ago, we were at our good friend’s beach house.  It’s one of our favorite places to BE.

It is amazing to watch the relationships with Brax, Tank and Emma evolve with our dear friends.  And Devon and I know that it takes a village to raise a child.

Watching Brax learn from Sweet Lou in the pool was amazing.  Brax rapidly progressed from Friday night until Sunday afternoon.

Much, much quicker than an adult can learn anything.

Part of the reason is youth and a, ripe brain.  But the other part is that Braxton is so endlessly curious.  He is self-competitive.

He asks a ton of questions, he tries something, then evaluates and adds on the next skill.  In this case, it was jumping in the pool with no life jacket, staying underwater for up to 10 seconds, searching the bottom of the pool for toys, etc.

It was amazing to watch and I was as proud as a dad could be.

What did I learn from Brax?  Simply to always be endlessly curious and to be better than I was prior (prior day, prior week, prior year and on).

P.S-I am taking people for the next Panda Challenge, it begins June 22nd.  Based on the first two challenges, the average inches lost around the waist in just 45 days is 3”!!!! If you are interested in one of the remaining 9 spots, reply to this email with ‘Panda’ in the subject box.

P.P.S-After much consideration, we are pushing our Fat Shredder to September.  We will be able to run it better and people will be ready for it.  We don’t want anyone to miss out.  Details will come out as it gets closer.

Mental Toughness Monday: I Challenge You

A week ago, when I was going for my Monday morning weighted vest walk, I was pondering what to talk about in my Monday video.

Sometimes toughness can be taught and conveyed as force and pushing yourself.  Sometimes that is appropriate.

Then there are times when toughness is simply choosing the path less traveled.

I challenge you this week to have a focal point for your attention when you start getting caught up in the fear and divisiveness that seems to be around every corner during these trying times.

I want that focal point to be something positive, something you have control over, someone you love, something you are grateful for.

How is that toughness?  Because, your thoughts are a habit.  Habits are hard to override, especially thoughts, because our brain is hardwired for the negative, it’s a survival mechanism.

So that’s my challenge to you this week.  Focus on something great in life everytime the fear goblin tries to rear his ugly head.

A Big Day All Around

One week ago, I had no idea where I’d be today.

I’ll get to telling you about the historic Monday from a week ago as the week goes on….

But today is a big day.

It is Tank’s birthday, it’s Memorial Day and as you read this I am down at the Jersey shore, getting ready to give a speech to a couple thousand people.

Funny enough, I don’t even know what I am going to talk about, but I do know it’ll come from the heart.

We will celebrate Colt’s birthday later in the afternoon and remember all those that gave their lives to battle for our freedom.

I got invited to speak today simply because I honored my internal convictions and values and carried them out.

In life, when we do what we know is right in our heart, amazing things happen.  The cool thing is that what’s right for you or what you have in your heart may be different than me, but that’s cool, great things will still happen.

P.S-By the end of the week I will have a date ready for you for our annual Fat Shredder contest, so stay tuned!!!!

Mental Toughness Monday: Punch Your Fear in the Face

As I was walking with Emma last week, I was reflecting on fear and mind mapping.  Fear comes from the reptilian brain, the oldest part of the brain that is focused purely on survival.

However, that part of your brain will react only in the instant when it perceives survival to actually be threatened.  The problem is when you continue to take in information that is activating this part of the brain.

It’s a problem because then your human brain starts to develop scripts and stories about the future and all the doom and gloom and ‘what ifs’.

As I’ve said many times before, fear exists only in the future and the future doesn’t exist.  I know it’s a mind blowing concept, but I want you to meditate on that for a minute today.

And, give your fear a punch in the face today and put it back where it belongs.

P.S-We will be up and running soon.  Some of you have been reaching out about the annual Fat Shredder contest.  We will be doing it, and are aiming to start in the beginning of June.  More details to come!

Why You Can Have an Advantage over 99.9% of People

As I’ve been looking back at videos I made from nearly a decade ago, I get goosebumps.

Why?

Because, I am learning from my younger self.  Some of the stuff resonates now with me more than it did back then.

It’s a cool thing when you can learn from your younger self.  Old videos, old journal entries and such.

If you don’t have a record of your younger thoughts, then begin now.

Anyhow, enjoy today’s throwback video of why you have an advantage over 99.9% of people out there if you choose to.

What I do When I am Having a Bad Day

About a month ago, a friend of mine and client of Newell Strength, came into the office and asked me if I could do a podcast on what I do when I am having a bad day.

So, that’s what I cover in today’s podcast.

We all have bad days, the key is to manage them, change your state as quick as possible and not allow them to bleed over into the next day.

You can take a listen to today’s episode in under 12 minutes right here: http://kylenewell.com/podcast/what-to-do-when-…having-a-bad-day/
