Become a Workout Warrior?

In late 2008, early 2009, people would come up to me while I was training and ask if I was doing Crossfit.

I was perplexed because I hadn’t heard of it yet.

But my training and the philosophy of Newell Strength, even in its infancy, was so outside the norm that people wanted to attach a title to it.

So yes, Newell Strength does indeed predate Crossfit.

And normally I don’t say much about them, because I don’t focus on other places.

Yet, it keeps coming up to me, from people that are jumping ship from places like that, that the said trainers at other places don’t understand that most people aren’t training to simply get good at exercising.

To exercise to become a good ‘exerciser’ is stupid.

There has to be a carry over to life: playing with your kids, being able to participate in daily activities that you enjoy, a better mindset, etc.

If you come across these ‘fake experts’ that want you to get good at sweating, tell them to take a hike.

The key with exercise is that you enjoy the process and that you get a sweat, all else falls under those things.

Health is Simple

I recall a presentation that I gave to the teachers of Bridgewater-Raritan school district 10 years or so ago.

At the time, I was still teaching there.

I was asked to present to the BREA on nutrition.

Well, one of the ladies had a question about why she always struggling with diet and exercise.

I told her it was a matter of discipline, a terrible answer and something my young, dumber self believed. I was nothing else if not blunt with her. Hey, we all make mistakes and that was a huge mistake of mine, the way I handled it.

Yet, the point I was trying to get across (I just didn’t understand the brain yet), was that health was simple.

I didn’t say easy, making change in life is one of the hardest things in the world to do.

But once you decide and cut yourself off from all other options, the process is simple.

Move, sweat, eat foods with less than 5 ingredients, drink water and get enough sleep.

How’s that?

The real issue is in first figuring out what is blocking you from taking the first step, and that my friend, is where Mind Mapping comes in to play.

Have You Ever Seen 5 Bald Eagles in One Place?

About two and a half weeks ago, I was taking Mateena and Dax to a park right near our house to get some exercise.

While driving up the road, I looked to the farm field on my left and did a double take, a few times.

Why?

Because it appeared that there were 5 mature bald eagles and some young ones, just chilling out, spread about the area.

I pulled over and got video, as did the car behind me.

We are fortunate enough to see an eagle pretty frequently down near the river near our house, but I had never seen anything like this!

Life will throw you signs and instances of pure beauty, if….you are open to seeing them.

How to Eat a Whole Cake

Devon made me my favorite cake in the whole world for my birthday a few weeks ago.

I enjoyed a few pieces that weekend and then thought I’d have it around for a few weeks if I froze it, to enjoy some more.

Well, I went to put it in the freezer late that Monday night and amazingly, the whole damn thing was gone.  My first thought was, ‘Mateena!’  But nope, the dogs didn’t get it.

It was Devon.  I was puzzled, because that cake is so damn filling that I have trouble having more than one piece at a sitting.  How could this be?

You see, Devon had been dieting her little butt off, despite me telling her to take it easy, because she wanted to get the baby weight off.

When we do anything to the extreme, your body will react in the opposite direction.  Hard core dieting leads to hard core bingeing.  She had entered ‘super-compensation’ mode, a state you can only get into from intense exercise and dieting (this is how I used to put on eating shows when I would get ready for a bodybuilding show).

We actually wound up eating some raw chicken that week too because her hunger got the best of her and she didn’t want to wait until it was cooked entirely, no joke!

If you find yourself using extreme will power, get ready for a nasty pendulum swing to the other side.  Coax, don’t force your body.
