Member Experience of the Week: Peter Mora

Peter began with us a number of years ago in one of our exclusive Ripped Dads contests.

At the time, Peter was a new father and a busy professional.

Here is Peter in his own words:

I was an active athlete through HS and other than that, my health strategy has been through general DIY research, workout DVD’s etc.  I would say the closest I could compare this training experience to is that of my HS sports training, where you have a coach invested in your success, counseling you on form, explaining the reason why, being supportive of your goals, holding you accountable to show up and throwing out the gauntlet to improve.  I am very happy with my choice in working out at Newell Strength and it has been a positive and great experience for me.

My strength is improving, I have learned more about my physical shape in the past month than I had understood in the past 20 years, my physical shape is improving whereas I can feel and see muscle where its not been in years, my attitude is healthier, my mind is clearer, I sleep better, I’m more at peace knowing that I am on a tangible physical health improvement journey with Kyle and his team.

I would say, this isn’t a typical gym, if you want to improve your physical health, you are open to being coached on form and strategy, you have a positive attitude, you don’t mind hard work and sweat, you need to check out Newell Strength to see if it’s a fit.  In four weeks, I was able to drop 5% body fat and add 10 lbs. of muscle to my body, which I feel is an impressive accomplishment.  I am very grateful to have the opportunity of being guided by the Newell Strength team on my physical health journey and would recommend the gym without hesitation.

Member of the Month for Hillsborough: Johnny Firley

Johnny was February’s member of the month for Hillsborough.

 

He joined us over a year ago and man, does he put in some work!

 

Johnny was used to going to the big box gyms, aka Globo Gym, and as he put it, it got stale.

 

Enthusiasm started to wane and therefore results started to plateau (there’s a lesson for life right there).

The $50 Burger

Have you ever had a $50 burger?

Well, I have, and let me tell you, it was damn good!

Was it the expectations that made it taste better?  Sure, that’s part of it.

Was it the quality of the meat?  You bet.

Was it the superior experience and service?  Yup, that’s part of what you are paying for.

In fitness, you can’t get the $50 burger while paying the price of a Mickey D’s ¼ pounder.

I can’t tell you how to invest your money, but I can tell you that Newell Strength is the $50 burger.

New Year, New You?

365 days ago, you had a vision of what this past year would look like.

It’s a very common thing and it’s great to get a fresh start.

Yet, if you continue to do the same thing year after year and keep winding up in the same place, then that’s the equivalent of riding a stationary bike 10,000 miles.

You could have traveled around the world on a regular bike but yet you chose to stay put.  Did you actually have 10,000 miles of experience?

Make a list of your frustrations from this past year and then put together a bullet point list of an action plan on how those same frustrations won’t happen again this year.

New frustrations are fine.  But to continue to relive old frustrations is a fools game.

Monster Truck Madness

A few weekends ago we were able to take Munchie to experience his first ever Monster Jam down in Trenton.

It brought back a lot of memories for me, I hadn’t been in over 30 years back when I was a boy growing up in Michigan.

The show was roughly two hours, but man, Munchie sat there like such a good little boy, totally captivated by the show.

Now, anyone that has or has had a toddler knows, you never quite know what you may get in public with a kid that age.

But they aren’t that much unlike adults, it’s just that have less of a filter.  Yet, we should be asking what we can take from observing toddlers that are enthralled by an experience and it is this: if you find something that you are interested in, the passion is easy.

The commitment comes easy.  People tell me they don’t like to read and I always respond that they don’t like to read things that they don’t find interesting.

BE a student and always be on the search for topics that you find endlessly fascinating.

The Incredible Hulk for Picture Day?

A week and a half ago, we took the boys trick or treating to a community tucked right behind where we live. It’s an old town and all the houses really get into the spirit of Halloween.

Anyhow, Braxton didn’t want to dress up in his Bumblebee costume, instead, he wanted to be the Incredible Hulk like daddy was last year.

Easy enough, it was a warm night, so I painted his face and entire upper body green and threw some jeans on him.

He was a hit! All the adults were commenting and saying how cool he looked. I guess kids normally get a Hulk costume and don’t just do body paint.

The thing about that paint though is that it’s a pain to get off. He was off of school next day (Thursday) but he has class pictures on that coming Friday.

We did the best would could to get it all off in that time but he still had a green hue to him when I brought him in for pictures. No worries, his teacher told me, the company would air brush him.

It gave us something to laugh about and remember and Munchie had a great experience.

You can either experience life or kind of just sit there on the sidelines, hoping no one notices you.

The choice is yours.

Client Showcase: The Notorious Nina Lombardi

Eric Kelner, aka the Ultimate Lawyer

Here’s a little bit about the September member of the month, Eric Schwarzenegger.

Eric, aka the Ultimate Lawyer, has been on quite the run lately.  When Eric first joined over a year ago, he was coming off a broken wrist that greatly limited some of his training.  But he didn’t make excuses, he knew the importance of his fitness and that he wanted to be a role model for his daughters.  Eric is also diabetic and once again, he could have done what so many people with diabetes do in my experience, which is to let it run their life and to become a ‘victim’, but he didn’t.  He has faced it head on, has asked for help in implementing certain nutrition strategies and has sliced body fat, season after season.  If that weren’t enough, he won the very first MyZone Cup at Newell Strength.  He advanced and beat each team he was put against, week after week, accumulating the most effort and energy points.  Continue to lead and inspire Ultimate Lawyer!

Breakthrough at the Water Park

One of our favorite experiences on our vacation was going to a local indoor water park one evening.

This was great, because it allowed Devon and I to take turns going down the adult slides.

We each did about 8 runs and we both felt rejuvenated afterwards.

There are two reasons for this.

1-Play is great for the brain.  It engages your brain in a different way and shuts off all the background clutter going on; one of the big reasons I love going to my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.

2-Nostalgia aka, Hebb’s Law.  What gets fired together gets wired together.  One of my favorite things growing up was going to either an amusement park or a water park with my family.

The same feelings I had then come flooding back along with the great memories anytime I am at a waterpark.

Kind of like when you hear your favorite song.

Put yourself in these states as often as possible.

What the Ocean Has Taught Me

I realized long ago that the learnings of life didn’t end when school ended.

Nope.

If anything, they were just beginning.  Life is our classroom and its up to us to learn and apply from each day’s experiences.

I love floating in the ocean.  Yet I know when to go in and when not to go in.

I know that it would be a mistake to try and fight the power of the water.

Water is the most powerful force in nature.

The ocean is a lot like life. Don’t try to control it, don’t try to fight it.  Be one with it, enjoy it and realize that you don’t have as much control as you think.
