How to Get Fat for a Hollywood Movie

 

About two weeks ago, I had the inspiration to make my weekly fasting video lesson on a hypothetical about how to gain fat and get fat for a Hollywood movie.  

 

The inspiration came from a movie I was rewatching that is nostalgic for me, Cop Land, in which Sylvester Stallone had to get out of shape and put on a potbelly for his role.  

 

As you can imagine, this was hard for a man that is always in shape.  

 

So, how would I go about helping a client do this?  I’ll outline it below, without lengthy explanation.  I believe that sometimes you get more out of the teaching if you connect the dots and ask questions.

 

Ok, 2 months to production begins, you have to gain 30 pounds of fat, here’s what I would have you do:

 

  • Eat 5-6 small meals per day while going into an absolute caloric deficit (cut more than 500 calories from your basal metabolic rate; rough estimate of your BMR would be your bodyweight times 10).
  • Drink a lot of alcohol assuming you had no issues with addiction
  • Cut your sleep to 6 hours or less per night
  • Have your foods consist of mainly refined carbs and animal protein
  • Keep water and salt low, no more than a quarter gallon per day

She Dropped 22 Pounds and 3 Inches!!

Nicole entered an application for the first ever Panda Challenge back in early March, before the world turned upside down.

Nicole was familiar with our unconventional approach as she was a former, long-time member.

She lost 3 inches on her waist and 22 pounds!  Better yet, her visceral fat, the fat that surrounds your organs (a marker of stress and dangerous predictor of future disease) went down 5 whole points!

Mental Midgets and Mental Toughness

As I was doing this morning’s walk with the Little Warrior, I had a thought….

Yes, I am always thinking, but today, it was about mental toughness Monday’s theme.

There are a lot of ways to develop mental toughness, but one of the least talked about is this: Develop your own set of beliefs and speak your mind even when it doesn’t align with the herd mentality.

It’s not easy to develop a belief that goes against the grain.

You will be ridiculed and told to get back in line.

But when I look back at my fitness career in particular, almost everything we do at Newell Strength from training to nutrition was at first so outside the norm that the fake fitness experts would critique and judge.

I didn’t care though, because it was a set of beliefs that we arrived at from real world experience.

You don’t have to agree with everything you are told you have to agree with.  Will that make you an outlier?  Yup, but who cares.

I’d rather be an outlier than a sheep.

Something to think about as you start your week.

I Have a Confession

One month ago, I sat in the baby room at our church with Emma when Brent, our pastor, was speaking about fasting as a part of his sermon.

 

He had mentioned Newell Strength a few times since the topic was about forming new habits, being that we had just entered the new year.

 

After the sermon, Devon and I went up to say hi as we always do and I said, ‘Brent, I’d be happy to do something fitness related for the community up here if you’d like.’

 

Bam!  Within minutes I had committed, he was putting the info in the very next sermon that was starting in 20 minutes.

 

They got a selfie picture of me and we were off to the running.

 

The lesson here is that I was stepping out of my comfort zone and I took action on an idea long before I even knew the details.

 

I didn’t know how I was going to do it, when I would fit it in, how I would speak to the people that joined my life group.  But it didn’t matter, the idea struck me and I spoke up.

 

In life, you cannot wait for all the lights to be green.  Just begin.

Here’s a Terrible Diet I Wrote

She sent it to me a few weeks ago after we were reminiscing about the original days of Newell Strength.

 

I always get a kick out of some of my early writings, programs and diets because I look back at them and cringe.

 

It’s not that I didn’t know anything, its that I didn’t know any better.

 

A lot of today’s fake fitness experts might look at this and think it’s actually pretty good.

Dude, Are You Okay’?

About 6 weeks ago, I was working at Newell Strength Flemington when I started getting the chills.

 

It turned out that it was the start of the flu.  And boy, did that kick my butt.

 

Anywho, I didn’t work out for roughly four weeks because of it. When I don’t work out, I tend to ‘shrink’ pretty quickly.

 

Combine that with my fasting protocol and weight melts off of me.  To put it in perspective, I weighed myself out of curiosity for the first time in 3 months the other morning and I weighed less that I did at my last bodybuilding show!

 

Getting sick like that and not working out for a while means that I am nowhere near where I used to be in terms of physical strength, but that’s okay.

 

My one friend was recently comparing me to some other friend’s commenting on who was the strongest etc.  Then he says, ‘But, you always have the best mindset, no one can touch you with that’.

 

Hey, I’ll take it.  I’ll take a bit less physical strength and more mindset mastery any  day of the week!

 

As you progress in life from ‘warrior’ to ‘teacher’, some of your old physical ‘stuff’ will fall away….

FREE Advice if You Want It

10 days ago, I sat in my buddy’s basement with some of my closest friends, watching the college football national championship.

 

It is a yearly tradition for us but the game always runs well past midnight.

We were discussing how late it was and what were doing the next morning when they asked me what time I was going to get up.

 

To which I replied, 5.

 

My buddy said, ‘But  you always talk about how important sleep is.  On a night like this, why not just sleep a little extra?’

 

And to be fair, he had a valid point.  But sometimes we need to know where we are at in life.  Right now, my focus is on staying strong on my ‘Mind Map Morning routine’.  I began right before Christmas but then got wiped out by the flu for 3 weeks.

 

We are not always going to have balance in life.  Overall, I’ve been doing pretty good with my sleep quantity so I knew a night or two of less sleep wouldn’t hurt in the long run.

 

Put your attention on the keystone habit in your life, the one that has the biggest ROI and don’t let your sights off of it.

The Power of Your Morning Routine

15 years ago, as a struggling student teacher and aspiring bodybuilder, I remember getting up every day at 4 or 430 to begin my morning routine.

 

Yes, at the time, I lived at home with my parents and my mom would often get up to find me studying or drinking coffee, listening to music that made me feel good.

 

My morning routine has always been the cornerstone of my life.  When my morning routine is on point, my life is better.  Point. Blank. Period.
