Game (20)

Imagine If You….

Imagine if you controlled your destiny…

Imagine if your words had power beyond the moment they were said….

Imagine if this wild crazy life was meant to be whatever you wanted it to be….

Know that you do control your destiny…

Know that your words have the power to influence for eternity….

Know that this life is a game, a game that you cannot win, but a game you were supposed to have fun in and compete at….

Life is simply, play hard, have fun.

1- The Fat Shredder is coming!  Realistically it’ll probably start at some point in the backside of May and run until the 4th of July weekend.  Here’s all you have to do for now: start thinking of your teammates. Each team will have at least a member, non-member and one woman (teams of 3).  It’s gonna be epic and just what we all need at that time:)

A Wickedly Effective Way to Win at Life

A few years ago I came to the conclusion that life is the ultimate game.

However, it is a game that cannot be won because if you were to win, it’d be over or you would stop growing.

But in a game, you must keep score and you must have fun, otherwise, why play?

Now, here’s how you win on the daily.

Ask yourself if you were better today than you were yesterday…

Ask yourself what your 3 wins from yesterday were….

And then become aware that if you aren’t being the person you want to be today, to your partner, spouse, kids, friends, colleagues, then you can be damn sure it’s because your mind is elsewhere.

Fix your focus and you win.

The Benefits of a Flexible ‘Diet’

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a Yankees game with a great friend of mine.

He got us box seats and it was quite a treat, all inclusive.

The spread was amazing and you better believe I went up 3, maybe four times!

And normally during my regular routine week, I don’t have dessert during the week.

But this was a special occasion and life is to be enjoyed.

Plus, with fasting, I have all the flexibility in the world.  Even if I ‘go off course’, I am not gonna get out of shape with just one meal.

With that in mind, I piled up some cookies and put some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right on top.

Fitness is to enhance your life, not become your life.  I’ve deprived myself and learned the hard way in the past….

Enjoy the special experiences of life and realize that flexibility is key to any long term success.

Amazing Discoveries From My Old Notebook

In my office shed, I have notebooks dating back a decade.
In those notebooks, I have notes from my thoughts, books, DVDs and seminars.  I was and remain a serious student of life and my craft.
I fully realize that the 10,000 hour rule does apply and I chuckle when people of the next generation think they can short cut their way to world class expertise.
Anyhow, for this episode, I decided to go back through one of those old notebooks and shoot from the hip.  And there are some gems I share with you.

What Are You Training For?

Emma Taylor was born roughly a month ago at this time.
And being that she was our third child, I had an idea of what was to come.
Which is why my fitness goal for the prior 90 days was to be in the best dad shape that I have ever been in.
I knew that my energy was going to have to be supreme, which was why I was aiming to get my body fat and weight to a certain range.
Yet, it is easy to slip into the external measurement game.  Our intentions can morph into what we perceive other people will think of how we look or what they will think of our numbers and so on.
As long as I have been in this game, it still tries to sneak up on me, despite my awareness of it.
Listen, you train for life.  You need to have the energy and confidence to show up however you need to show up to be your best self at home, in your relationships and at work.
If something, your program, is detracting and taking you down the wrong path and your energy is suffering, then you are on the wrong path.
Remember, the purpose of any goal is to increase your level of happiness.  And part of being happy is having great energy.
Lastly, no one cares what you look like! So stop trying to convince yourself that that is your real motivation.  Do some soul searching….

Protect Yourself From Future Health Disasters

It was a weeknight in the fall of 1998.

Two of my buddies, Rogel and the Worm, were over playing a college football video game.  We used to play a season together complete with wagers on taking the champ out for a nice dinner.

Man, it was simple back then:)

Well, shortly before I had to leave to go pick up my brother Presh from CCD, I offered the guys a snack to have while I was gone.

Rogel said he would have the sleeve of cookies that was sitting in the pantry which was A OK by me.

I went out, picked up Presh and was back all within 15 minutes or so.  About 15 minutes after I got back, Rogel was starting to feel a little ill.

It was at that point that he asked me, ‘Was there peanut butter in those cookies’?

I didn’t know so I had to go down and find the box and sure enough, there was peanut butter in the cookies.

Rogel then informed us that he was allergic to peanuts, which the Worm and I found hysterical because at that time, it was literally unheard of.  NO ONE I ever came across had a peanut allergy.

Needless to say, Rogel missed the next 3 days of school.

In the present day, it seems that every other kid has a peanut allergy.  I am not sure what happened to cause this, although I do have my theories…

That night was about 20 years ago.

And 20 years from today, I hope the norm is that things like cholesterol and sodium are looked upon as the critical and beneficial nutrients and substances that our bodies need for superior health.

But I highly doubt it since there is too much money going the other way.

YOU need to, YOU must take your health into your own hands.

Life is a Game You Cannot Win

Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve contemplated life and what the purpose was.  Invariably this lead me to wondering about the mystery of death, a lot!

I’ve come to the conclusion that life is a game that you cannot win.  If you’ve been playing with the idea of winning in mind, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

I believe the point is to play and grow, play and grow.  Both playing and growing are intimately tied to happiness.

In today’s episode of ULYIS, I cover this concept in more detail.

A Rock and a Baseball Bat Are a Stupid Idea

While taking the pups for our morning walk on our pitch black street, a memory popped into my head.

Not really sure why it decided to visit me, but it did.

It was 1993 or so and my best friend at the time and I were at our older brother’s all-start summer baseball game.

We had one of those little wooden souvenir bats that you get as giveaways at Major League games.

Well, the game we were watching was a blow out, so we decided it would be a good idea to have our own home run derby off to the side with our little bat.

The problem was, we didn’t have a ball small enough to match the bat.

So what’d we do?

We decided to use rocks.

We were only about 10 feet away from each other to make it easier to see the rocks coming in to hit.

I was, unfortunately, the one to pitch first.

BAM!  First pitch; line drive right off my forehead!

It could have been much worse if it hit me in the eye, but it didn’t.  It left me with a huge, bloody welt right in the smack-dab middle of my forehead.  Game over.

What were we expecting?  Dumb ideas produce dumb results.

At least we were smart enough to leave the game alone after that.

Are you heading into the beginning of this year with the same dumb plans that have gotten you exactly nowhere the past few years?

You must recognize your thought patterns and then actively change them.  Otherwise the brain will just go on autopilot and repeat the self-same thing, over and over.

Another Vicious Dog Attack, This Time on Munchie

Yes, there are two lessons here.

The first: there is a lesson to be learned in every single event you experience each and every day.

The second we will get to.

Last Saturday, we went over to see how our new tenants were doing.  I had to check on the cold water valve, which took a bit longer than expected, so Devon and Munchie were upstairs shooting the breeze with the girls.

The one girl had her two chihuahua’s away in a bedroom.  Well, about 40 minutes into our visit (way too long!), she let them out.

She was worried that the one brown haired dog was too nasty to be near Braxton, so she held him the entire rest of the time.

Well, just before leaving, we all went down to the basement so I could show them where the one valve was that me and my buddy were fixing.

The other chihuahua, a white haired one, was on the floor next to Munchie.

I was looking up at the ceiling at the pipe and next thing I know, the dog made a weird noise and Munchie was bleeding from his eye and lip.

Apparently he touched the dog from behind and it just snapped (a good thing Mateena wasn’t there or I am sure we would have had a dead chihuahua on our hands).

The owner was mortified.

Devon and I stayed calm.  Braxton was shook up for sure but a few tears and a Christmas cookie and he was happy.

We left shortly after reassuring the owner that it wasn’t her fault.

On the way over to Lowe’s, Devon started getting a pit in her stomach like somehow it was her fault.  Which of course, is the motherly thing to think, but it was in no way her fault.

She was beating herself up for reacting too slowly.  But here is where the lessons come in.

When in a state of stress, we often go into freeze mode, which causes us to not react or to react a bit slower than normal.  Devon was fighting millions of years of physiology, she had not a shot.

And from what I have seen and heard in the past with little dogs and little kids, I should have formulated a prediction and told Devon to hold the Munch man.  This would have been a response to my prediction, which goes along with the brain being a pattern recognition machine.

There is a HUGE difference between reaction and response.  One his human, the other is animal.

Yes, this can apply to any area of your life.  All I am asking you to do is to think about it and ponder it.

Munchie is okay.  His eye wound up swelling pretty bad and he had to go on a round of antibiotics because the bite turned into an infection. But it and that’s a big BUTT, it could have been so much worse.

His actual eyeball went unscathed.

Beware of the lessons in your life.

-Kyle Newell

This Doesn’t Mean You’ve Traveled the World

“What if on your last day, you met the man you could’ve become?” -Danger and Play

I once knew a man that traveled over 50,000 miles on his stationary bike.

He liked to brag and boast about this feat, but to me it was silly.

All I heard was, ‘I have wasted 50,000 miles worth of my time sitting in the same exact spot, accomplishing nothing but a little leg movement’.

I won’t go into one of my rants here about slow, long distance ‘cardio’ but I do want to help you connect some dots here.

By going that distance, he could have literally traveled the world more than a one time over.  He could have gained experience and overcome obstacles.  But he didn’t.  He did the same boring thing, day after day.

Wisdom is not found by age.  You don’t become more wise just because you are older.

You gain wisdom by experience and by failure.

If you are doing the same boring job in the same way that you were 10 years ago, I hate to tell you that have wasted 10 years.

When I was teaching, I used to see this all the time.  Some teacher would have 20 years in the game, but after year 2, they never grew.  They just did the same routines and lessons over and over and over again.

That’s 20 years of teaching with 2 years of experience.

Get out there and fail.  Get out there and experience life.  Put a knife into the heart of fear because fear is what will keep you the same as everyone else.
