Advice to Dads Out There

Two Sundays ago, I took Brax and Colt to the playground to play with their cousins.  

 

It wasn’t long before I began to play tag with them.  

 

But it wasn’t just any tag.  Nope….

 

I put on the Halloween theme song on my phone and began pretending I was Michael Myers.  They requested it.

 

And before long, there were about 10 kids playing, the parents of the other kids were loving it.  I was having a blast and the kids were sweating their necks off.

 

Dads, when you have the chance, actually play with your kids.  Don’t sit there and count the minutes while they play.

 

It’s good for you and great for them.  

 

It’s memories like these that you’ll always remember.  

 

Exercise for ALL isn’t ‘exercise’ when you are ALL having a blast (read that again).

May She Rest in Peace

About 2 months ago, our neighbors and good friends moved down to Florida.  

They had a pet fish, Ava, that they didn’t want to take with them so the boys adopted her.  

I love watching fish in their element, but have never been a big fan of having a pet fish, but the boys were getting a kick out of her.

Anyhow, I had to scold Tank a few times about picking her up, letting him know that she had to stay in her bowl.

 

Well, 2 weeks ago, I put the boys to bed and heard some shenanigans going on in their room.  I went downstairs, opened their door and Colty quickly took his head away from the bowl.  

 

He was caught red handed!  Caught doing what, I have no idea, but I do know he was blowing bubbles into the fish bowl.  

 

I didn’t think too much of it, got them back in bed and that was that.

 

The next day, Devon called me to asked if Ava had died.  I was a little surprised and replied not that I knew of. 

 

That was odd because Ava wasn’t in the bowl, she thought I had flushed her.  Now it made sense, Colty must’ve eaten her!!!

 

Despite the shock and awe of that scenario, that wasn’t the case either.  Devon found her behind the nightstand.  Whatever Colty was doing caused Ava to wind up on the floor.  

 

No more Ava, but we do have a lifelong memory.

Where Will You Be In 23,000 days?

Almost a year ago, we gathered to celebrate my grandparents 70th anniversary. 

Amazing!  

If Devon and I are fortunate enough to even live that long, we will celebrate our 70th in about 23,000 days!  

It’s mind boggling to think about the commitment required for anything to stay focused for that long: a calling, a career, a relationship, a life…

My grandparents are a part of the greatest generation.  They were taught never to give up and to be resilient.  

Resilience will take you all the way to the top, especially in the microwave world we now live in.  

Listen, it’s easy to feel like you should throw in the towel when you start stretching your comfort zone.  But if you give into that feeling, you’ll never grow.  

Be resilient, put one foot in front of the other and see what happens.

Don’t Envy the Transformers

On our last date night a little over a week ago, Devon and I were talking about the brain and how change actually  happens.  

(Don’t you feel sorry for her sometimes that she is stuck with my weirdness?)

I was explaining to her the difference between thinking about change and when change actually happens.  Many people think and ponder changing their life for the better for months, years, heck, even decades!  

In their mind, change and transformation is this long, drawn out process that must be suffered through.

In reality, real change happens in a split fraction of a second, once you make up your mind to transform.  Will the physical manifestation happen in a split second?  Nope, but all things start in the mind first.  

People that have totally transformed their lives have done so by first making up their mind to do so.  So, while you may think about changing, it will remain nothing more than that; a fleeting thought that you have every now and again.  

When you finally make up your mind to transform, it’s like a lightning bolt.  

You don’t have to envy those that transform into the butterflies of life, you can BE one yourself once you decide to BE.

The Best on the Planet Was Here at Newell Strength

A few days before the 4th of July, one of our long time members, Timmy, told me that Stan ‘The Rhino’ Efferding, was looking for a gym to host his NJ portion of his traveling seminar series.

I told Timmy to reach out and let him know we would be more than happy.

Well, on the 4th of July, right as we were heading out for a party, Stan shot me a text.  He informed me that just a few days later, on the following Wednesday, they would be coming through.  

Stan is a professional bodybuilder and was once the world’s strongest bodybuilder in addition to being a heck of a businessman.  

I’ve watched his lessons and videos throughout the years, so it was surreal to have him there, in front of me, teaching us at Newell Strength.  

 

Chance? 

 

Random?

 

Luck?

 

Or was it energy that made it happen?

 

Believe what you want and it’s most likely true for your life.

I Am Now Well Done

A few weeks ago, Devon and I went down to our good friends shore house for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary.  

Yes, we went with the little kids, gone for two nights away from them for the first time.

Anyhow, on that Saturday, we went to the beach to lounge around and read.  It was a hot day, yet breezy and hazy.

You couldn’t see the sun, which often gets me in trouble once per year.

Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s energy isn’t there.  

Devon and I both got a little crispy, not the worst it’s ever been, but certainly not comfortable. 

A couple of takeaways: energy is all around us, even though you can’t always see it.

And two, you tend to forget lessons that only come around once per year, to learn, we need repeated exposure or a reminder.

But, nonetheless, I’d rather have too much vitamin D than not enough of it.

I Was This Close….

As I was tidying up the kitchen while Devon was at her workout this morning, I came to the rolling pin.  

Devon uses this to flatten out her dough that she uses to make us homemade pizza on the weekends.

As I grabbed the rolling pin, a memory popped up into my head.  

It was 1997, I was in the midst of high school basketball tryouts and I was sore as all heck.  

I went to the kitchen, grabbed my dad’s rolling pin and sat on the ground.  I started to roll out my calves and quads.  

Little did I know the science, but I knew that it made me a bit less sore.

Nor did I think that 10 years later, rolling sticks and foam rollers would become an entire industry in and of itself.  

If I had, there is a good chance that we would have been the originator of foam rollers.  

Ideas and innovation are everywhere, it just depends on someone bringing them to market.  

Share your ingenuity with someone, odds are that you have some great insights and ideas to share.

Why Would You Dive Right into the Deep End?

Just the other day, a client asked me why I have people go right into a 48 hour fast with our Panda Challenge.  

 

The answer in that case is simple, I want to build confidence by eliminating fear right out the gate and time is of the essence (the challenge is 45 days).

 

Two weeks ago, I decided that me and my buddy Frank would begin to make Friday’s more of an old school, bodybuilding leg workout.  I knew Frank wanted to put some size on his legs and I am always looking to push myself, so it seemed to align.

 

I was faced with the prospect of building up the volume and intensity of the workouts over the course of weeks to alleviate the soreness that would come or we could dive right in.

 

I chose the latter.  

 

I’d rather get that initial discomfort over and done with and then be able to go balls to the wall each session thereafter.  

 

As I write this, my legs are still sore to the touch:)

 

So, the answer of whether to dive into the deep end or go slow and steady when it comes to habits is that it depends on the person and what the habit is that you are trying to work on.

How to Get Fat for a Hollywood Movie

 

About two weeks ago, I had the inspiration to make my weekly fasting video lesson on a hypothetical about how to gain fat and get fat for a Hollywood movie.  

 

The inspiration came from a movie I was rewatching that is nostalgic for me, Cop Land, in which Sylvester Stallone had to get out of shape and put on a potbelly for his role.  

 

As you can imagine, this was hard for a man that is always in shape.  

 

So, how would I go about helping a client do this?  I’ll outline it below, without lengthy explanation.  I believe that sometimes you get more out of the teaching if you connect the dots and ask questions.

 

Ok, 2 months to production begins, you have to gain 30 pounds of fat, here’s what I would have you do:

 

  • Eat 5-6 small meals per day while going into an absolute caloric deficit (cut more than 500 calories from your basal metabolic rate; rough estimate of your BMR would be your bodyweight times 10).
  • Drink a lot of alcohol assuming you had no issues with addiction
  • Cut your sleep to 6 hours or less per night
  • Have your foods consist of mainly refined carbs and animal protein
  • Keep water and salt low, no more than a quarter gallon per day
