You Don’t Have a Mindset Problem

6 years ago, I spent a weekend in a classroom learning from Dax Moy.  The topic was Mind Mapping, something that was calling me to learn and to teach.

 

Little did I know that it would be one of the great learning periods of my life.

 

One of the things that many people don’t know that Dax taught me was the concept of the ‘3 brains’.

 

We are all only taught about the human brain, otherwise known as the mind.  The problem is, you can’t access the mind fully and progressively if there is a deeper ‘brain-set’ problem in the animal brains.

Powerful MindMap Realities for You

Back in 2014, when I first started learning about Mind Mapping from Dax Moy, I knew I had connected with something that spoke to my spirit.

 

It became and remains a deep passion of mine.

 

So, as of late, I have been going back to the beginning and ‘re-learning’ the whole thing.  Which means, lucky you, I am going to be entertaining you with Mind Map principles and stories for the forseeable future (remember, teaching is the best way to learn).

Finding Simplicity in Complexity

Last week, I started back at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, after a long lay off because of numerous ligament tears that I have been letting ‘settle’.

I went back for a few reasons: I love to learn and the Professor has a great way of Teaching, I enjoy the camaraderie and I think a Dad should be able to take a hit and get choked out without panicking.

Anyhow, I think back to a lesson the Professor told us a while back that was this:  If the process is too simple, he gets bored and won’t pursue it.

The ‘it’ can be anything.

‘Find satisfaction in the complexity’, he said.

When we achieve or conquer something that is complex, we get a big rush of dopamine, which sends us looking for the next thing to conquer.  We need things that are complex in order for us to grow.

How boring would your life be if everything was a breeze and there was no struggle?

The key to doing the complex is in breaking it down until you have the next simple step in front of you.

The Highest Form of Learning is Unlearning

I was always a decent student, not great, but above average.

Unless the subject matter stimulated me, I didn’t see the point.

It was only after I graduated from college that I realized how much of a passion I had for learning.

I swore I would never read another book again when my commencement ceremony was over, my dad can attest to this.

Then as I kept getting deeper and deeper into my passion of strength training, I realized how much more there was to learn. And I realized that information is not knowledge.

As the years have gone by, I have discarded principles that I thought I would live by the rest of my life. But as I learned, I discarded. Back and forth it went. I kept emptying my cup.

What’s one thing you can pour out of your cup this week? One belief that you choose to challenge?

Discover Your Courage

Nearly two weeks ago, Devon and I were sitting in church absorbing a great sermon from our Pastor about courage.

He said that many times he doesn’t feel fully confident when he is planning his sermon for the week that he is qualified to teach it to us.

But when he gets up there, something happens, in which he has a flow and he connects the dots and things he didn’t know he knew, he suddenly can teach.

If he withheld and gave into this feeling of ‘imposter syndrome’, then he wouldn’t be able to share his gift with the world, with us.

You have hidden courage.

Whatever it is that you are passionate about, that your heart keeps nudging you to pursue, you owe it to us and to that calling to start talking about it.

If you are on a fitness quest, then own it by learning more about it.  Once you learn, you can teach (but only when asked, never teach unsolicited).

Courage can only exist where fear and uncertainty are currently living.

Droppin Dimes in a MiniVan

We had two rides with a driver, John, down in Florida.  He was a sweet guy, early 70’s.

He pitched us on driving us to the airport when he was driving us around the day prior.

And I was glad he did.

On the way to the airport he talked and talked and then talked some more.  But this was a good thing.

He had some great ideas about the gym.  I didn’t ‘yeah but’ him, I just listened.  I made notes on what he said that I felt was relevant and simply forgot about the rest.

Learning opportunities are everywhere if you allow them to BE.

When it comes to your fitness, our philosophy is to teach you to fish….once you learn, you’ll be set for life.

Positive Criticism

I learned early on through playing sports that there is only one way to get better and that is to practice the Slight Edge.

The slight edge is one of our 3 core values at Newell Strength and it means that you always learning and growing, even if it’s just a tenth of a tenth of a percent, each day.

If you have the mentality of a snowflake, you’ll never get better.  If your feelings get hurt when you are told that you need to get better at something, then you’ll never seek out advice from those that can help you get better.

And the longer you avoid positive criticism, the more this internal conflict will grow within you.  The thing with conflict though is that although no one likes it, if left unspoken, it is 10X more powerful than if you confront it head on.
