Mind (30)

Don’t Envy the Transformers

On our last date night a little over a week ago, Devon and I were talking about the brain and how change actually  happens.

(Don’t you feel sorry for her sometimes that she is stuck with my weirdness?)

I was explaining to her the difference between thinking about change and when change actually happens.  Many people think and ponder changing their life for the better for months, years, heck, even decades!

In their mind, change and transformation is this long, drawn out process that must be suffered through.

In reality, real change happens in a split fraction of a second, once you make up your mind to transform.  Will the physical manifestation happen in a split second?  Nope, but all things start in the mind first.

People that have totally transformed their lives have done so by first making up their mind to do so.  So, while you may think about changing, it will remain nothing more than that; a fleeting thought that you have every now and again.

When you finally make up your mind to transform, it’s like a lightning bolt.

You don’t have to envy those that transform into the butterflies of life, you can BE one yourself once you decide to BE.

Liz began training with us at Newell Strength over a year ago.

She came from another facility that she had simply outgrown and it has indeed been remarkable to see how she has grown in mind, body and spirit in that time period.

Liz even has her husband, Dennis, training with us now too and they are both a key piece to the community and family of Newell Strength.

Your Mind is Like Parachute

Imagine jumping out of a plane, 10,000 feet up in the air.

Your security is your parachute pack.

And your parachute can only work if its open, much like your mind.

When you have a closed mind, you will not learn anything.

An open mind allows you to create and creating is the real key to learning, making your own connections.

Always practice emptying your cup.

How to Meditate

The main thing that I’ve noticed over the years is that people are very quick to put their ‘fun’ time and meditation time on the back burner, always thinking that they will get to it someday.

Well, that someday is now.  Yes, meditation is that important.

I believe you haven’t bought in yet because you aren’t clear on what meditation really is and how to do it.

There are a lot of misconceptions about meditation, such as having to sit in a certain position and empty your mind of thoughts; both of which are totally untrue!

In today’s episode, I explain why I believe in meditation and a few simple meditations that I practice personally.

Letters to the Boys: Walk a Mile in My Shoes

I hope you boys are following along with all of these principles.

While adding your own spice to make them your own, of course.

And I do realize that advice not asked for is advice that will be rejected.  So, I am glad that you are reading this at your own accord.

Ok, let’s get into what’s on my mind today.  That shoe was my very first baby shoe.  Braxton, you actually found it at Gigi and Pop-pop’s house one evening.

Funny enough, the sight of the shoe inspired this writing.  You never know where inspiration is going to come from, so always ‘be open’.

Now, to get to the point.

You cannot walk a mile in my shoes, nor can I walk a mile in your shoes.  Yet, we must do as best we can to understand that everyone is fighting their own inner battles.

The stuff that you take for granted are the things that other people are praying and wishing for.

You never know when a smile or a text message is going to change the course of someone’s day.  This is the principle of being the bumble bee.  As you know, I have a bumble bee tattooed on my arm as a constant reminder to always show up.

You guys have to be the change you want to see.  You guys have to be the person that can brighten any dire situation.

Since you cannot literally walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, don’t think that you can know why they reacted the way they did or why they took a certain action.

People’s actions probably will not make much sense to you and that’s because we each have our own unique thought patterns and temperaments.

Remember that judgment never does anyone any good.  Even if you are the judge, you may think that you are high and mighty, but the energy level of judgment is low on the scale of consciousness.  Judging can only bring you down, just as gossip will.

People are doing the best they can with what they have.  This means that people learned differently as they grew up and those patterns created certain neural highways that became their patterns.

Everyone is at a different level of development and on a different path.  No one wants to make mistakes or disappoint others, so don’t react as if other people’s actions were intentionally done to make your life more difficult.

Don’t sweat the small stuff and remember that it’s all small.

In life, have no hurries and no worries.

Be the role model, have an impact.

I love you boys and I am proud of you for taking action to better yourselves.

The Benefits of For-give-ness

I vividly recall a recess in second grade when a kid named Jeremy sucker punched me right in my lip.

I was bleeding but I didn’t react.  Instead, when the aid came over I told her it wasn’t his fault, I wasn’t hurt and we were just playing.

I chose to forgive him in that moment.  I could have sought my revenge and plotted to jam a spork in his side, but I didn’t.

Most people go through life holding on to so many grudges and qualms that they can’t see the fact they are living in the past, not experiencing the present moment.

As always, I put my Mind Map lenses on every chance I get to examine human nature and how it is unfolding in my life.

The human brain doesn’t like open loops.  I’ve discussed before about how the brain will hyper focus on open loops until they closed (this is how To Be Continued….works).

When we fail to forgive an event or person, we are shackling ourselves to the past.  We are keeping an open loop so to speak.  That loop is open because we’ve refused to allow it to die because of the very grudge we are holding in our heart.

So, you have this instance in which brings up bad memories, yet you, yourself perpetuates it.  Once you forgive, you close the loop and your brain can focus in the here and now.

A Coach once told me that forgiveness is really about ‘thank you for giving me this opportunity to grow’.  Wow!  It still impacts me the same way every time I hear it.

Being upset and angry isn’t going to help you grow your world.

Forgiveness means ‘giving forward’.  You can’t move forward if you are chained to a memory.  And really, lets break that down a little further.

A memory is just a figment of your imagination, just like the future is a figment of your imagination.  To our brains, time doesn’t exist, it’s just a theoretical concept.

Every minute that goes by that you don’t forgive is another minute that you are giving to the energy of recreating those lower energy levels of emotion that you experienced in very moment.

I personally take the time to do ‘the work’ every morning about one situation that needs my attention and forgiveness.  This falls under my ‘Family’ category of the F-5 system since if I don’t’ clear my head of the lower energy fields of holding anger and hurt then it affects my family directly.

As I always say, do the opposite of what most people are doing and you’ll be on the right path most of the time (99%).

Struggle in life is going to happen, suffering is optional.  Forgive those in your life that need to be forgiven and give yourself that gift.

Your Main Problem is That You Think You Shouldn’t Have Any

Your Main Problem is That You Think You Shouldn’t Have Any

While eating a nice grass fed, organic cheeseburger the other night, I had a Tony Robbins documentary on in the background.

I have long been a HUGE fan of Robbins’ work.  ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ is one of my top 5 all-time books and was THE book that got everything started for me.

Devon and I even stayed at his resort in Fiji for our honeymoon 5 years ago.

His message is always relevant to the listener IF the student is ready to accept the truth.  And that was once again the case in his documentary when he told the crowd: You wanna know what your main problem is?  Your main problem is that you don’t think you should have any of the problems that you have.

Think about that for a second.  The nature of the mind is to not want problems, yet we cannot grow without problems, failure and challenge.

The winner’s mind seeks out and embraces problems.  If you avoid problems at all costs, you are living small.

Were you put here on this earth to live big or play small?

The purpose of life I believe, is growth.  You cannot stay the same.  You are either regressing or growing.

The very law of momentum in life means that it’s impossible to stay put.  Yes, you can rest for a few minutes to smell the roses, like the sherpa that is climbing the mountain.  But like the sherpa, you must decide to keep going.

The higher up you go, the more important it will be to rest and recharge.

Speaking of recharging, Dana is running an awesome special for her FST sessions for the month of December: buy 2 get one free.

Get something different this year for your family members.  You can even use that extra session on yourself to recharge.

I have tried many different types of recovery and relaxation methods, but this is by far my favorite! You can email her at dana@newellstrength.com

The Pitbull Attack on my Birthday

The Pitbull Attack on my Birthday

Two years ago, on my birthday to be exact, we took Dax and Mateen over to the dog park before going to see a movie later on that night.

Devon was 8 months pregnant with Braxton at that point.  We were already at the dog park for about a half hour when I noticed a pit bull acting very strange.

And after talking to the owner, I knew why.  The owner was aloof and didn’t even know the background of this dog that he had rescued one month earlier.

I do hate that pit’s get a bad rap, they are beautiful dogs and usually the ones that you see on the news are part of a cultural problem, not the actual breed.

Anywho, we watched as the pit spearheaded another mut right in the side for no good reason.

That’s when I said to Devon that we should start making our way to the truck.  We had already been there long enough and I didn’t like having this wild card near my pups.

Now, keep in mind, stupidly, I had flip flops on because it was a very hot, late summer day.  Mateena made one more bee line to go mark her territory as we were walking towards the gate.

I turned around and saw the pit running at her. There was also a rot that had just arrived, making his way over to the very same area.

Mateena knows herself as silly as that sounds.  I’d argue that she knows herself better than most people.  She knows that she is a loner and that she doesn’t like being in a crowded area.

And like any dog, she reacts if put in a situation that she doesn’t like.  The pit went up behind her and started sniffing her BE-hind.  Mateena turned and did this little chomp she does to let other dogs know to back off.

As I saw this unfolding, I was already running as fast as I could over to the spot because I knew what was about to happen.  The pit reacted to her chomp and clamped down on her skull.  Thank God I got there in time to kick the pit in the head a few times, dislodging his grip on her.

Stupidly, once again (man this was a dumb day by me all around), I stayed between the pit and Mateena and the rot that was now starting to get worked up.  I didn’t think about what it could have done to me.  I reacted and put my family first.

Luckily, I was very aware of my surroundings that day.

I knew the environment and I could ‘feel’ the energy that was in the air.

You can do the same thing, not with a pit bull of course but in your home, at your job, etc.

Environments are triggers.  The brain is always scanning your environments.  You are either going to be at the mercy of your environments or you are going to master your environments.

People often are stressed out of their minds because of their very mismanagement of their environments.

Well, lucky for you, Dana told me it’d be okay to run a special for her Fascial Stretch Therapy service for the holiday season.  For the month of Decemeber, Dana is offering a buy 2, get 1 free deal.

I am already booking a bunch for myself and Devon.

If you are overly stressed, tight in your lower back and regular old massage isn’t doing the trick, then shoot me an email and I will set you up with Dana.  For inquiring minds, if you aren’t sure what FST is, Dana shows you in a quick video here: https://youtu.be/mSUTCEkl3lM

The Path Is Immediate

The Path Is Immediate

When I was 17 years old, I wanted to be the best strength coach in the world.

I didn’t even really know what that meant because I had no one to set the bar against.

All I knew was that I was consumed with this idea of being the best.  Looking back on it, it was being the best that I could become.

It was reaching my full potential.  Am I there yet?  Nope, not even close.

However, I far surpassed my ‘movies of the mind’ from way back when.

You never really know where you are going to wind up.  Most people never even sniff their best self because they are unwilling to see how far they can actually go in life.

The path, your path, is immediate.  You are on it right now.  You can see the next step or even maybe the next couple of steps.

But the path is going to wind and zig-zag and go up and down.  Most people try to see the end from their current position.

You cannot see the end from where you are right now.  All that projecting does is increase your level of anxiety and makes you feel like a loser.

If you are feeling the great anxiety gap, just know that it is caused by trying to focus on the end of the path (which doesn’t really exist, it just keeps going) rather than your current and next steps.

Success is yours for the taking.  So what if it means you gotta show up and do the work every day.  So what if it means that you didn’t see anything after one day of doing visualization exercises.

The time is going to go by anyway.  You and you alone are in charge of your destiny.  If you don’t think so, it’s because you’ve bought into the lie of ‘out there’.

I will be teaching some really cool stuff that will help you activate regions of the brain that you didn’t even knew existed and fusing that with some serious mental work to make 2017 your best year ever.  This one is going to be a bit different, so there’s only room for 6 people.  You can find more info and sign up here, if you dare to be great in 2017: http://kylenewell.com/december

It’s Not What You Comprehend, It’s What You Retain

It’s Not What You Comprehend, It’s What You Retain

I am going to let you in on a little secret of mine.

But you have to promise not to tell anyone!

Ok, here it is:  when I learn something valuable, I teach it and implement it immediately, like that same day-immediately.

That’s it?

Yup, that’s it.  So many people go to seminars and learn and get all jazzed up but never take the shrink wrap off of their ideas.  They never implement.

Just last week, a friend and mentor of sorts of mine, Roy G Biv, was giving me some nifty pointers and advice.  I made sure I took action that very night on the two things he had taught me.

If I had waited, they would have become just some other cool ideas that never saw the light of day.

Every time I learn a new Mind Map technique or style of writing or exercise, I teach them or put them to use in the very next session.

Teaching is the greatest learning tool we have.  Teaching is how you implement.

Teaching will cement ideas into your nervous system in ways that mere comprehension never can and never will.

Comprehension is what everyone does.  No one retains much these days.  Be different, start retaining the lessons you are learning in life.

In December’s Mind Map workshop, I am going to be teaching YOU some very cool things that you will implement the very same night to understand your brain more and to unleash some hidden powers within that you never knew you had.  You can register for one of the 6 spots here: http://kylenewell.com/december
