I remember realizing the potential of my mindset back in 2006.

I had always been into positive thinking and visualization since as early as I can remember as an athlete.

But one of the amazing things I learned back in 2006 was how to instantly reframe any situation.  It is a skill that we can all use (remember, all skills can be learned).

How to Master Your Mindset, Monday

Last week, my head was cloudy heading into one of my BJJ classes.

Yet, I knew that I would have clarity on the issue that was bugging me by the end of the class.

The physical movement and the learning of new skills makes new connections fire in your brain. Combine that with the endorphins and growth factors that are produced and that enter your brain when you physically move and your mind will light up light a fireworks display on the 4th of July.

Anyways, I was stressing about a position we need to fill on the team at Newell Strength and then I realized in class that the day before I met Devon, my wife, I had no idea she existed.

Nor did I know she would be the one that I married.

‘Chance encounters’ can happen at any moment and key relationships and people can come into your life in the blink of an eye.

I was able to ‘re-frame’ my line of thought for the day and my whole attitude followed suit.

Reframe and move. Move and reframe.

Once Your Mindset Expands…

I was incredibly fortunate this year to be able to hire Matt Furey as my personal success Coach.  This is a man that is super modest, despite his extreme success.

In fact, people don’t know this, but Tony Robbins has paid him a few times to come and do a consult (I always wondered who the masters went to as their teachers).

Everytime we have a Coaching call, he expands my way of thinking.  So funny enough, he actually brought this up on our call last week.

He said, ‘Kyle, once the mind expands to new realities and possibilities it can never go back’.  And how right he is!

The problem is that most people don’t let their minds expand because they get stuck in a rut with their way of thinking.

Once you know what’s possible, why would you settle for anything less?  When I see someone use a weight in the gym that they’ve never used before, I will tell them, ‘Awesome job!  Now you can’t ever go back, you now know what your new capabilities are’.

The Real Reason Mind Mapping Almost Didn’t Happen

A little over two years ago I was sitting at a sandwich shop, talking with a buddy, scheming about why we should leave the seminar we were attending.

It didn’t make sense.

There was no way we could actually use it.

And, there was one really annoying girl in the 10 person class.

But something in my gut told me to stay, so that we did.

That seminar was my first exposure to Mind Mapping with Dax.

I was scared.  I was so into the mind, but this would be one more thing to learn and to try and master.  I didn’t have the time I told myself.

Or was I scared that I would actually become much more powerful in helping people transform their lives and the awesome responsibility was the thing I feared?

I am not quite sure, but I am glad that I over-rode my instinct to flee.  Every time you feel that instinct in a non-violent situation, it is your chance to step outside your comfort zone and grow.

Pay attention to the signs of life, they are everywhere and they come at you multiple times per day.

Grow or shrivel, the choice is yours.

Have you ever been stopped dead in your tracks by judgment?

I am sure the answer is yes.  The brain is very sensitive to judgment for survival reasons.

Here’s how it works:  your brain perceives slights and judgments.  The animal brain perceives it as you might get ‘kicked out’ of the tribe and your chance for survival goes way down.

(By the way, this is THE reason people in general are so petrified of public speaking).

Whenever you are trying to actually create something in your life, the swamp creatures will come out to attack.  It’s human nature.

And if you worried about everyone that said something mean or nasty about you, you would never ever be able to succeed.

Do you know why Rhino’s don’t feel gnats?  It’s because they have thick skin…

What other people think of you is none of your business.

If you expect that any time you are passing someone on the ladder of life they WILL bark at you, then you can formulate your response ahead of time.

Don’t give them any energy of yours.  Simply move on and realize that if you are trying to please everyone, you will wind up pleasing nobody.

Your self-image is everything.  Believe in what you are doing.

December’s workshop is going to be like nothing you’ve ever experienced.  I was going to do it on the 14th, but I need a little extra time to prepare for this one.  This one will be limited to 7 people max.  Keep an eye later this week for the bullet points of what we will be doing at this ‘Davinci’ workshop.

You Have Megatons to be Thankful For

I am hoping that you get to read this before this great holiday of traditions and festivities begin.

You can feel the vibration levels of the people around you rising on days like this.

Everyone is in a better mood.

Be present today, BE.

It’s so easy for us to live for a future that doesn’t exist yet or to get caught up in past turmoil and grudges.  But both of those ‘places’ aren’t real.  They are projections of the mind.

Now is a GIFT, that’s why it’s called the present:)

Take some deep breathes today and take some mental pictures of the moments you find yourself being present in the moment.

In life, when we get down and overwhelmed, it is usually because we have become too SELF-focused.  How can you we change that?

You can make a list of all that you are grateful for in life.  And yes my friend, you have MEGAtons to be grateful for.

You have your vision, both literal and spiritual.

You have people that love you.

You have use of your hands and feet.

You have true freedom.

You have a nice bed to sleep in.

You are the WORLD to someone else.

Let’s remember as head into this holiday season that life is precious, to be lived in the moment and be mindful when your mind starts to leave you behind.

Line up that body, your brain and your spirit like 3 lasers ready to shoot through any obstacle that gets in it’s way.

Will and Skill(s)

As I am sitting here in my basement office, beginning this piece, I am now a 35-year old man.

Far too old to even attempt to enter the Navy, which would be the first step to becoming a Navy SEAL.

Nor would I even attempt it at this stage of my life.  Devon and Braxton depend on me, but I have often fantasized what would have happened if I was a young, single guy and I had the wisdom of life that I have now, compared to when I was 20.

In my fantasy world, I think I could have made ‘it’.  I wouldn’t be worried about the physical tests, but I was always highly intrigued by knowing whether or not I could have made it mentally.

The SEALS are known for their mental and physical toughness.  I have read many SEAL books and have even employed some of their methods into some of the ‘mental toughness’ portions of workouts at Newell Strength and in my own training as well.

But enough of my fantasy world.  Why I am talking about SEALs in this article?

Well, I’ll tell ya why…

SEALs to me are associated with a certain mindset.  And this article my friend, is about the biggest mindset myth and a new way to achieve success.

In my humble opinion, the biggest mistake that people make in terms of trying to create a habit (your entire life is nothing but a bunch of habits: what you eat, how you work, whom you hang out with) is they rely on will-power.

Somewhere along the way, it was taught to us that will-power was the key to success.  And while a little bit of it is great, too much will lead you right back to your starting point or perhaps even a lesser starting point from which you began.

The human brain (PFC) runs on will power.  And that part of your brain runs on glucose.  Once the glucose is ‘burned up’, you will go into a mental fog so to speak.

You have to let that area of your brain replenish before tapping back into it.  Yes, you can try and push through it, but if you ever have in the past you will know that it feels like moving through quicksand.

And that is because you enter into a ‘tension zone’ and tension is pretty much like sand paper for creative thought.

What this also means though is that our supply of will power is finite.  BUT, most people never use their will power at all.

They go through life like a robot, happy to be mediocre.  They do what they are told and their entire life is one big comfy routine.  They never try to get out of their comfort zone.

Being that most people never use their own will-power, you can and should use other people’s will power.  How can you do this?

Simple, whatever it is that you are trying to do, whatever you are trying to achieve, tell them about it and tell them often.  They are going to ask you about how your quest is coming along, and they will do this constantly if you tell enough people.

I’d say that nearly 100% of people that have lost significant amounts of weight and have kept it off have used this little trick.  People start to cheer them on and every time they see them, they will ask, ‘How much more have you lost?’

I use weight as an example because the physical visual is very easy to comprehend.  Now, if they used will power and didn’t tell anyone about their journey, you could be sure that they would have failed.

The brain doesn’t form habit around will-power based activities.  The brain can only form habit around things it finds easy and pleasurable to do. So yes, you will need a little will power but that also means that you will have to rob it from other areas of your life.

Trying to become a best-selling author and lose 50 pounds at the same time?  Good luck, unless you are writing a best-selling book about your journey in real time (which would actually be pretty smart now that I think about it).

Ok, so now that you have some understanding of the biggest myth of the mind; the myth of pushing through everything you don’t enjoy doing and hoping that success finds you on the other side of that rainbow, let’s move onto my new views on goals and goal setting.

I was recently exposed to an outside the box thought, one of the first that I have heard in quite some time and by that, I mean an idea that I have never heard anywhere else.

In the book, ‘How to Fail at Almost Anything and Still Win Big’ by Scott Adams (this will be this month’s book of the month), he talks about goals and they are the wrong way to go.

Goals leave us in an almost perpetual state of feeling like a failure, IF you set them like most people set them or if you even set goals at all.

We are never quite there when it comes to goals, so that will leave a feeling of: still haven’t made it or, man, I still have a long way to go’.  Who wants to have our numero uno environment, your brain, having thoughts of failure constantly?

I sure don’t.  But what’s the solution? It’s to have systems that you can work every single day.  A system is binary, it’s did you do it today, or didn’t you?  Systems are habits and now you can see why I am so intrigued by this idea.

Systems will move you towards anything you want to achieve and they will leave you each day feeling like a positive success.

This may take some thought on your part, so to help you along, here are some of my systems that I need to employ every day:

  • Wake up by [4:30] AM at the latest every day
  • Workout in the morning or get some kind of sweat on every single day
  • Perform my ‘brain’ exercises immediately after taking the dogs for their walk, first thing in the morning
  • Setting my schedule for tomorrow, the night before. And doing a recap of the current day.

I have more, and I won’t explain why I do each of these just now because this is quite lengthy and I want to make sure you get through this before that brain sugar burns off.

I do know though that if I do these systems every day, I will move closer and closer to what I want to achieve in life.  Notice too that there are no specific goals because a specific goal would be just that, a goal.  These are general systems, although specific to me, that will and have been working magic in my life.

Back in May of this year, I finally pulled the trigger and hired Producer Jonathan to run my podcast.

You see, I had been sitting on the idea for nearly a year.

It was one of my top 3 goals for 2016 but yet I just couldn’t pull the trigger.

Not because I didn’t want to, but because I had so many other things going on.

And besides, creative work is the hardest kind.  ‘Old man resistance’ will come up to get you at every turn.

I didn’t know where to begin, although I knew where to find that information after talking with a few buddies (remember, information is rarely the real road block).

Was my dream going to become a ‘coulda-been’?

And then, like manna from the heavens, I stumble across Producer Jonathan.

I applied for a consulting call ($500 for 30 minutes).  We rappe for a bit on Skype and then I went all in.

I invested quite a bit into his coaching and services, BUT…

I knew that if I did so, I would make my dream a reality because I would have someone holding me to the fire, expecting results, not putting up with any BS.

So here we are, just recorded episodes 15 and 16 yesterday and I am super jazzed about the direction that business is going in.

When you have an opportunity seeking mindset in life, you will never create a real impact.

When you have an investment mindset, you know that you have to invest your time, energy and money but as long as you do the work, the ROI will be super.

Don’t Rip Up Your Money Like I Did

On Monday morning, Munchie and I went out to run a few errands.

The first stop on the way to Devon’s school Halloween parade was to the bank.  Munchie was taking a quick catnap in the back of the truck, so I made it snappy.

I made a deposit and took out a little cash.  I stuffed the cash in my pocket and forgot about it.

We made it to Devon’s school on time and wound up staying for the classroom party.  Munchie is always a big hit with her third grade students.

The Munch man and I were out for a little bit longer than I expected, which meant that he and Dax and Mateena were all going to be hungry for lunch .

Well, I whipped up some food for him and gave the pups their food.  All was good.  10 minutes later, as they were all finishing up, I took Braxton out of his high chair and put him down so he could run around.

Meanwhile, I was making a quick call.  I don’t know if it was Munchie or Dax (Dax loves to put his nose in my pocket to see if I have any treats in there), but one of them took a few twenties out of my pocket.

I didn’t realize that though until I heard a ripping and tearing noise a minute or two later.  Even at that point, I still didn’t give it much thought.  I was thinking Dax had gotten a paper towel or something.

And then, I walked around the corner and saw it.  Two twenty dollar bills completely shredded!

I had to laugh at the situation.  The little rascals had fooled me.

While that’s an example of literally throwing money away, there are so many areas of your life in which you are probably of the opportunity or cost mindset which is just another way to throw away your money.

If everything is an expense, then you will opt for the cheaper and inferior option.  The option that promises the quick fix.
