Monday Mindset: It Happens For You

I remember when I was heading under the knife for my second patellar tendon rupture in the span of 3 years.

Right before the lights went out, Dr. Gecha said, ‘Kyle, I am so, so sorry this happened again.  But I promise I’ll fix you up as good as new.’

To which I replied, in a drugged stupor, ‘It’s okay Doc, I got this.  It’ll allow me to help more people.’

I didn’t think much of it, but when I went in for my follow-up two weeks later, he asked me about that.  He couldn’t believe I didn’t have the victim mindset.  He even asked me if I would speak to his group of surgeons about mindset and mental strength.

You see, in life, you can either believe that things happen to you or that they happen for you.  It’s only the difference of 1 word, but its light years apart as far as mindset.

And the cool thing is that it’s up to you which one you choose to focus on….

Mind Your Beliefs

I write a weekly letter to the kids that I will one day put into book format for them to read when they become adults.  Here is an entry from a few weeks ago that I thought you’d enjoy!

Hey kids!

 

As you may be able to tell by Braxton’s shirt, it’s the Halloween season!  One of our favorite family times of the year!

I wanted to talk to you today about beliefs and the power of your beliefs.

As a famous man once said, ‘Whether you  believe you can or you you believe you can’t, either way, you’ll be right.’

So why do we as humans sometimes choose not to belief in what we are capable of?

The answer is simple.

If we have limiting beliefs and we live up to those limiting beliefs, then we are validated and we are proven correct.

It seems counter intuitive, but the EGO likes to be right and likes to say, ‘See, I told you so!’ More often than not, the EGO thrives on playing the victim because playing the victim means that we don’t have to change, the problem is ‘out there’, not within.

I want you to picture a role model in your head that is stronger, tougher, smarter, more successful and the next time you find yourself in a tough spot or at a growth point, ask yourself how that role model respond and mimic that.

Lastly, and this is mind-altering, EVERYTHING starts and ends with your beliefs.

Your beliefs lead to…..

Your actions, which lead to….

Other people’s beliefs about you….

Which lead to their actions….

Which reinforce your starting point beliefs.

The only way to change the cycle is to change your beliefs.

Mastering your mindset is true power.

Believe that….

What Does Your Sunday Night Look Like?

Don’t worry, I am not asking you to give up your Sunday night for a hangout.

Nope, I am usually holed up on a Sunday night with Devon.

Yet, if you are like most people, you may get the frequent ‘Sunday Night Blues Syndrome’.

That’s when you feel a dip in energy, a feeling of dread and a sadness because your weekend is over.

How about you make this Sunday night different.  Plan out your week, write down 3 things that you love in your life, 3 great memories you’ve had and why this coming week is going to be great.

Life is the story you are telling yourself about ‘it’.

Your mental fitness is just as important (in my opinion, more important than) your physical fitness.

Are You a Human Doing?

Years ago, probably 16 of them or so, I remember one of the cooks at my dad’s restaurant pulling me aside to tell me he knew I would go on to impact a lot of people.

It wasn’t the first time someone had told me that, but it did strike me as odd since at the time I was just competing in bodybuilding and working as a waiter.

Looking back on it, people like Mark (the cook), saw how I did everything the same way, with energy, focus and passion.  Dealing with people, my nutrition, my training and so on.

I tell you this not to toot my horn but because it is a good illustration that we are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.

Don’t get caught up in your to do lists and just being busy all the time.  Why not make a ‘who you want to be’ list?

There is more to life than simply increasing the speed of it.

Have You Ever Seen a Revolutionary War Grave?

On the very same expedition a few Fridays ago, we came across some graves of some Revolutionary War veterans.

You can see the boys here standing behind one.

Some people may think it’s disrespectful or creepy, but I view it the opposite way.

We found this long forgotten soldiers resting place and took a picture of it and thought about what his life may have been like.

We respected him by thinking about his life.

When it’s all said and done, are you going to leave an impact strong enough on the planet that people will wonder what YOUR life was like some 250 years or so later?

It starts today, with a thought, followed by one action.

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

 

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

 

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

 

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

 

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”

The Path Is Immediate

The Path Is Immediate

When I was 17 years old, I wanted to be the best strength coach in the world.

I didn’t even really know what that meant because I had no one to set the bar against.

All I knew was that I was consumed with this idea of being the best.  Looking back on it, it was being the best that I could become.

It was reaching my full potential.  Am I there yet?  Nope, not even close.

However, I far surpassed my ‘movies of the mind’ from way back when.

You never really know where you are going to wind up.  Most people never even sniff their best self because they are unwilling to see how far they can actually go in life.

The path, your path, is immediate.  You are on it right now.  You can see the next step or even maybe the next couple of steps.

But the path is going to wind and zig-zag and go up and down.  Most people try to see the end from their current position.

You cannot see the end from where you are right now.  All that projecting does is increase your level of anxiety and makes you feel like a loser.

If you are feeling the great anxiety gap, just know that it is caused by trying to focus on the end of the path (which doesn’t really exist, it just keeps going) rather than your current and next steps.

Success is yours for the taking.  So what if it means you gotta show up and do the work every day.  So what if it means that you didn’t see anything after one day of doing visualization exercises.

The time is going to go by anyway.  You and you alone are in charge of your destiny.  If you don’t think so, it’s because you’ve bought into the lie of ‘out there’.

It’s Not What You Comprehend, It’s What You Retain

I am going to let you in on a little secret of mine.

But you have to promise not to tell anyone!

Ok, here it is:  when I learn something valuable, I teach it and implement it immediately, like that same day-immediately.

That’s it?

Yup, that’s it.  So many people go to seminars and learn and get all jazzed up but never take the shrink wrap off of their ideas.  They never implement.

Just last week, a friend and mentor of sorts of mine, Roy G Biv, was giving me some nifty pointers and advice.  I made sure I took action that very night on the two things he had taught me.

If I had waited, they would have become just some other cool ideas that never saw the light of day.

Every time I learn a new Mind Map technique or style of writing or exercise, I teach them or put them to use in the very next session.

Teaching is the greatest learning tool we have.  Teaching is how you implement.

Teaching will cement ideas into your nervous system in ways that mere comprehension never can and never will.

Comprehension is what everyone does.  No one retains much these days.  Be different, start retaining the lessons you are learning in life.

The Lumberjack Who Worked Smarter . . .

The Lumberjack Who Worked Smarter . . .

It’s a lumberyard and there were these lumberjacks that this lumberyard sends out every day to the forest out in Oregon to chop down trees.

It’s early June and all the recruits of college guys came to work for the summer, and you know, they’re all college athletes and most of them were football players and these huge guys because not only are they getting paid, but they were also getting in shape by swinging axe all day.

This was the perfect job.

So, after a few weeks, after the initial thrust were people are kind of getting a little bored, one day the boss called everybody over and he said, “Okay, every once in a while I do this. We’re going to give a bonus of $250 to whoever chops down the most trees today.

So, we’re going to start as we always do at eight o’clock.

Everybody is going to take an hour break for lunch, and then you’re going to hear the bell ring at five o’clock.

Then, we’ll tell you tomorrow who won the prize.

Well, everybody’s geared up because these are all competitive guys, and about twenty of them, all college guys.

There was one guy who was in his sixties.

He’s been working for this company for years and years and years and years. Everybody totally discounted him.

Well, everybody started swinging their axe and falling trees and the energy level was high, but the old guy like every hour, hour and a half, he would just mosey up the way into a shed and come back fifteen minutes later and start chopping again.

So, people said, “What a loser this guy is.”

So, they’re chopping and chopping and then another hour and a half later, they see the old guy go up to the shed and all that. Okay, five o’clock, everybody ends with a big spurt, and everybody thinks they won.

The next morning at eight o’clock, the boss calls everybody around, and he said, “Ralph, come over here.

Here’s your $250.”

Everybody says, “Are you kidding me?

Ralph was the old guy.

How he could win?

He was taking a break.

How could he win?

How could he chop down more trees?”

Somebody said, “Ralph, what were you doing when you’re going up to that shed?”

Ralph said, “I might be old, but I’m smart.

I was doing something that you guys weren’t doing.

Every hour, hour and a half, I was sharpening my axe.

I was sharpening my axe.”

That’s what we’re talking about.

The person who gets the best grades is not the person that works the hardest.

It’s the person who works the smartest, and we’ve spent all these hours trying to convince you of this that don’t just keep swinging the axe, just don’t keep working hard.

Start working smart.
