FREE Advice if You Want It

10 days ago, I sat in my buddy’s basement with some of my closest friends, watching the college football national championship.

 

It is a yearly tradition for us but the game always runs well past midnight.

We were discussing how late it was and what were doing the next morning when they asked me what time I was going to get up.

 

To which I replied, 5.

 

My buddy said, ‘But  you always talk about how important sleep is.  On a night like this, why not just sleep a little extra?’

 

And to be fair, he had a valid point.  But sometimes we need to know where we are at in life.  Right now, my focus is on staying strong on my ‘Mind Map Morning routine’.  I began right before Christmas but then got wiped out by the flu for 3 weeks.

 

We are not always going to have balance in life.  Overall, I’ve been doing pretty good with my sleep quantity so I knew a night or two of less sleep wouldn’t hurt in the long run.

 

Put your attention on the keystone habit in your life, the one that has the biggest ROI and don’t let your sights off of it.

A Breakthrough for Your Sleep

I was sitting in the classroom out in Tempe, Arizona, learning from the esteemed Charles Poliquin, a living legend in my eyes.

And before he proceeded to try and belittle me for 30 minutes in front of the classroom on day 2 of the course (long story; he is a genius but that doesn’t mean I want my sons to grow up to be like him), he spoke about sleep.

Charles runs around with the top doctors in different areas of specialization.  He told us that his sleep doctor friend had told him that the most important factor in the quality of your sleep was to have a consistent wake up time.

Simple right?  But what happens when that alarm clock goes off and all you want to do is hit snooze?

Invariably you do it, we’ve all done it.  But, did you know that when we do this we reset our sleep cycle?  Studies have now shown that snoozing for just a little bit, causes something called sleep inertia.

Sleep inertia takes 4 hours to ‘shake off’. Is 10 minutes of more beauty rest worth four hours of valuable day time?

If you struggle with this, then use the 5 second rule I wrote about last week.  When the alarm goes off, count backwards from 5 and say, ‘get up’.  Your logical brain will overcome the emotion of wanting more sleep.

Always try to practice the ‘slight edge’.

I Know How You Feel…

I know how you feel.

 

Being a busy parent is tough.

 

Your time is limited.

 

It’s rare that you get to relax and kick your feet up.

 

Sometimes you think about all the freedom you used to have.  (It’s okay, don’t feel guilty about it).

 

Sometimes your energy is on ‘E’, but you can’t stop, you need to be the parent and partner that you committed to being.

 

And that’s why it’s more important than ever to manage your energy, to create more energy so you can be the best you to those that need you.

 

Get your weekly workouts in, manage your sleep (you need at least 7 hours per night), do a short, daily meditation or walk, drink you water, nourish your body with good food.

 

Yes, it’s tough, but you got this.  I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

 

Put your energy first and foremost and it’ll be A O K:)

Picking Ticks Off In the Middle of the Night

For as long as I can remember, I have been super-sensitive to touch.

It’s as if my spatial awareness was hyped-up on some juice.  And, it’s only gotten more pronounced as the years have gone on.

Not to say that I have a super power, but I often sense a thing moving before it moves.

A good example would be yesterday when my deodorant (not anti-perspirant, but that’s another article) fell out of my cabinet in the bathroom.

I was brushing my teeth with my left hand, sensed the deodorant falling and caught it before it hit the sink with my right hand.

Might not sound that odd, but it happens to me all the time.  I like to think I have a little bit of ‘spidey-sense’.

You would think that being so sensitive to my surroundings would potentially make it hard for me to sleep, but it doesn’t.

I sleep like a rock, usually only waking up for a crying Braxton (if Devon nudges me) or a few minutes before my alarm goes off.

Except when my spidey-sense kicks in during sleep.

About a month ago, I woke up from a deep sleep in a pitch black room, reached down to my leg with my thumb and pointer and plucked a tick clean off of me. It wasn’t embedded yet, it was simply crawling on my leg.

What’s the point of all this ‘weirdness’?

The point is that if you develop any of your skills or senses to a maximum degree, the brain will take over and your subconscious will do a lot of the thought for you.

Think about how this can relate to any of your routines or ways of thinking.

Plan out the next day the night before.  Know what your morning routine is every single morning.  Let the brain do it’s thing.

It’s the most amazing thing on earth if you allow it to be.
