My Bleeding Heart

I remember 30 years ago, as a young elementary school student, getting so excited on Valentine’s Day for the classroom celebration.

 

I loved giving out the cards to all my classmates and getting those tasty little candy hearts to munch on.

 

Anyhow, happy Valentine’s Day!

 

A few weeks ago, we had our 2nd ‘How to Have the Healthiest Heart Around’ seminar.  It was a great success once again.

 

Dr. Andrey and I were texting in the days that followed about how this was a worthy mission, one that we were both passionate about because it could literally save and transform lives.

 

When you find a mission, you make it work, you dig deep, you realize that you don’t have to do anything….you GET to carry it forth.

 

If you find a big enough reason for your mission, pursuing it in the face of fatigue and resistance is simple.  You don’t have to dig up willpower, it’s a part of you.

Baking Soda Brownies

11 days ago, we had some of our closest friends over the Super Bowl.

 

It’s become a great excuse to hang out over the years.

 

Anyhow, in preparation, Devon was baking and I was getting some other stuff ready around the house.

 

The boys were at my parents and as I was getting ready to go pick them up for the party, Devon asked me if I could get her out the powdered sugar.

 

I went and grabbed a bag out of the pantry and I thought it was the correct stuff.  It was a bag within a bag so I couldn’t read the label.

 

Devon told me that it wasn’t the right stuff so I went back in and grabbed a big ziplock bag with what I thought was powdered sugar.  It had no label since we had transferred it from the original bag to a ziplock.

 

I didn’t know nor did I care, I was just looking forward to the Blonde Brownies she was attempting to make since they are one of my favorite desserts of hers.

 

Well, fast forward a couple of hours and people started to dig into the brownies.  I was over near the fireplace with a beer when I saw the look of disgust on the faces of Devon and those that had taken a big tasty bite of the brownies.

 

Followed by them running to the sink and nearest bathroom to gag and spit it out.

 

Devon looked at me and said, ‘YOU!!!!’  Me?  Apparently the second bag I had brought out was baking soda, not powdered sugar. Ha!

 

So, rather than 4 cups of powdered sugar they got a nice big taste of 4 cups of baking soda.

I guess the moral is….measure twice, cut once.

Member of the Month: James Ghanim

James first started at Newell Strength 13 months ago.  At the time, he wasn’t sure what he was going to get out of his trial, but after 30 days, he was hooked.

 

His transformation has been an inspiration.  James has lost 60 pounds, more than cut his body fat percentage in half and become incredibly strong! Just last week he was able to press the 100 pound dumb bells!

The Early Years of Newell Strength

The idea for Newell Strength was first planted in my head in 2006.

 

I never knew what it would become, only that it ‘could become’.

 

And when I need to get centered again, to rediscover my mission, I find that reminiscing about the early days and my ‘why’ often does the trick.

Big Trees and Big Dreams

Two weekends ago, a buddy came over on Saturday morning and we went to work on a monster of a tree that had fallen some time back near our creek.

 

It’s a big damn tree and thank God that it didn’t fall towards the house!

 

Anyhow, I worked on it throughout the summer here and there and for some reason, on this particular Saturday, I was having trouble slicing through.

 

Now, a chainsaw is a relatively new toy for me, I got it last spring when another tree had fallen on the property and I realized this was an investment that would pay dividends.

 

Well, buzzing through this tree, my buddy finally says, I think your saw is going dull, because that’s a big blade and it should be zipping through this.

 

To which I asked why it would have become dull so quickly.  He said, ‘It’s the tree, it’s a monster.’

 

Now, I could have continued to struggle for the months ahead working on this tree with a dull blade or I could simply sharpen my saw.

 

I chose to sharpen my saw.

 

In life, we need to know when we need to sharpen our saw, which could mean gaining more skills or taking a rest period.

 

I believe it was Abe Lincoln that said if you gave him a day to cut down a tree he’d have spent ¾ of the day sharpening his axe.

Members of the Month: Steve and Susan Shortino

A better part of a year ago, Steve and Susan decided to try us out at Newell Strength.  There is nothing better than to see a married couple begin their fitness journey together, especially when it is based in support and spending time together.

Member Showcase: Casey Ransone

Casey and I grew up together.

 

In fact, there is an old Little League photo of us hanging up in the Hillsborough Newell Strength when we were 11-12 years old.

 

Casey has gone on to great things, but one of the things I admire most about him is his ability to find harmony in his life between being a husband, great dad, varsity football Coach and an individual.

 

Yup, he still makes time for his own personal health and fitness.

What Do You Mean ‘Don’t Ice’ Your Injury?

6 years ago, I came across some compelling research on the healing process for the human body.

 

And it went against the grain, just like so many things that we teach at Newell Strength.

 

What’s that you ask?

 

It was the idea of not icing an injury.  I could go on to why that is, but that’s not the point of this piece.

 

The point is that we are all affected by cognitive dissonance to some degree; this idea that we are so entrenched in a belief that we cannot fathom the other side and refuse to see the other side.

 

Well, if there’s one thing I am good at, it is ‘emptying my cup’ and examining all sides of an issue, implementing and experimenting and then making my own conclusions.  With my second knee injury, I didn’t ice one time, in fact, I did the opposite: heat, compression, movement and so forth.

 

I had a record recovery and my doc was shocked.

 

Last week, a good buddy texted me an article from a big publication about ‘How we should no longer ice an injury’. He said, ‘Look at that, you were right.’

 

In life, don’t be married to too many things, keep an open mind and be like water, test stuff out, teach it to learn it and continue to grow.

Friday Finisher: ‘I Dare and I Do’

There are many mornings and nights that I spend outside, reading and contemplating my life.

 

I get caught up in trying to figure out the ‘how’, which leads to freeze mode and anxiety at times.

 

Then, I rewind myself and realize as long as I know my why and the objective, the how will figure itself out.  Now, it doesn’t just happen, it takes tremendous amounts of energy to create and build anything in life.

 

But don’t get too caught up in the how.  You will figure it out one step at a time.

 

When I do these rewind sessions, I realize it’s about my mindset, do I believe in myself or not?  And one of the simplest mantras I  use is: ‘I can and I will.  I dare and I do!’

 

Breathe and repeat until it becomes a part of you.  Write it down and carry it  with you.

 

It’s a simple thing, but so simple that most people  will choose to overlook it.
