If I were to look at programs I wrote for people 10 years ago, I’d be embarrassed.  But at the time, that was the best that I knew.

GL is Down 100!!

Two Friday mornings ago as I was walking in for my 6AM workout, GL was on his way out.  He came over and told me the news that he had officially lost 100 pounds!!!

We gave each other a big hug and it made me light up!

When GL started the first time around, almost two years ago, you could say that he failed.  He had modest improvements in his very first Ripped Dads contest, but he hadn’t truly flipped the switch yet.

He came back 6 months later and now look at him!

There are ups and downs, he’d be the first one to tell you that.

But you know what his key to success is????

It’s to show up, day after day, even if you had a slip up the day prior and focus on winning that day.

100 pounds in unfathomable to most people and if you thought about it all at once, you’d have no shot at achieving it, your brain would be overwhelmed.

Inch by inch, it’s a cinch.

I Just Got Off the Phone With….

20 minutes ago I just got off the phone with one of our new Ripped Dads member.  

He had heard about us through numerous people (thank you for that!) and has now decided that this was the time to take control of his health.  

He had previously been going to one of the big globo gyms, but he said himself, ‘You get what you pay for and I know my health has to have a premium on it’.  

If you can do it yourself, then great.

But if you haven’t gotten the results and its been years of trying, then now is the time to invest in yourself.  The nutrition and fitness that you invest in today will become who you are in the coming years.

No Shame In Saying That We are the Best

Some of you that read these daily emails have been members for a long time.

Some of you that read this are lurking, deciding if it’s something you’d like to try.  And I get it, trying something new is scary.

Just in case you need that final nudge to get you to pick up the phone….

An Airplane is Off Course 90% of the Time

Did you know that when you fly, the airplane is off course almost the entire time?

The pilot has to constantly reassess and course correct.

If they didn’t do this, your flight to Miami would put you out in the backwoods of Alabama or Louisiana.

Course correcting in your own life is about using lead indicators rather than lag indicators.  The goals that you set are lag indicators, the outcomes if you will.

The lead indicators are the things that you must measure daily and weekly, they are the process.  If they are constantly measured and on track, you will hit your goal.

Goals are really about processes and systems that you can win at every single day.  They are not about the event 3 months away from now, focusing that far out will only make it much more difficult to ever achieve.

Member of the Month for Hillsborough: Geoff Arlen

I can remember the first time Geoff ever came to Newell Strength back in 2012.  He came to try it out with long time member, Frank.

Geoff was busy, having his own law firm, but he was going to be getting married and wanted to be in the best shape that he could possibly be.

He achieved that and as life happens, he stopped for a period of time with us at Newell Strength.

But then, after having kid #2, Jackson, he decided that he, being an older dad, needed to make his own fitness and health a priority.

So, he started back up and he is on fire.  He makes it in at 5 or 6 am before his busy day with family and business starts.  And as you’ll see in the video, little things like playing with the kids on the floor and then getting up, 20 times per night, have become easy.

That’s what it’s all about!

I Know How You Feel…

I know how you feel.

 

Being a busy parent is tough.

 

Your time is limited.

 

It’s rare that you get to relax and kick your feet up.

 

Sometimes you think about all the freedom you used to have.  (It’s okay, don’t feel guilty about it).

 

Sometimes your energy is on ‘E’, but you can’t stop, you need to be the parent and partner that you committed to being.

 

And that’s why it’s more important than ever to manage your energy, to create more energy so you can be the best you to those that need you.

 

Get your weekly workouts in, manage your sleep (you need at least 7 hours per night), do a short, daily meditation or walk, drink you water, nourish your body with good food.

 

Yes, it’s tough, but you got this.  I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

 

Put your energy first and foremost and it’ll be A O K:)

How to Master Your Time

I remember a note my dad left me about 10 years ago.

It read, ‘K, you’ve accomplished more in the past year than most can do in a decade.  I am proud of you.  And if you have time, show me how you did it. Love-Dad’.

Well, I did it out of necessity.  I created intense time pressure around everything I did because I had no other option.

At the time, I was till actively competing in bodybuilding, I was just getting Newell Strength to a growth point and I was teaching full time.

Progress, Not Perfection

 

Today, time is precious for me.  I have four, 20-minute work blocks spaced out by five minute breaks in between.

Years ago, I would have panicked, feeling like today was a loss.

But not any more.  Today is chance to ‘move the chains’.

This is a football analogy in case you aren’t familiar with the term.

 

Life isn’t about the hail mary highlight, it’s about moving the chains one foot at a time.

Today, I am going to move the chains through 80 minutes of focused work.

And that all ties in to the idea of progress, not perfection.

Perfection is F.E.A.R disguised as a noble thing.  Perfection doesn’t exist.

Perfection the fear that tells you that others may judge you since what you are ‘putting out there’ isn’t good enough, yet.

I got news for ya, it’s never going to be perfect.  But good is good enough.

In life, you have ideas, some are good, some are bad.  But when a worthy idea ‘sticks’, we must move forward with the idea of progress in our head and hearts.

Take the first step.  Move the chains a couple of yards today.

At the end of a week, a month, a few months, a year or even a few years, you will have been up and down that field of life so many times, all through the scope of daily progress.

Whether you are working on your body, your mind or your spirit, apply the concept of progress, not perfection.

You got this.

What Temperature is Your Thermostat Set At?

Growing up, we rarely had the AC on nor did the heat ever really go up about 62 degrees (unless we had company coming over).

Were my parents trying to toughen us up? Maybe, but the real reason is that they had 4 boys to feed and take care of and if they could cut down a little on expenses by having an extra layer or two on, then great!

They were able to put all 4 of us through college!

Now, what would happen if I messed with thermostat when I was a boy and started opening windows in the winter time? If the thermostat was set to 62, it would drop temporarily and then get back to 62.

Well, we work the same way psychologically. You will never advance past your self-identity or where your internal thermostat is set to. Can that change? For sure, but it takes work and changing your beliefs.
