This video was some weekly footage we used to shoot of everyone training with us.  This was from the 2nd location and as you can see, we had very few women training with us at the time.  How things have changed!

Way Back Wednesday: Big Ben

As we continue down this memory lane for the next few weeks, I came across this video of Big Ben, who was one of the top HS tennis players in the state at the time.

You can see the white racks still in boxes in the background and you can see Drew, one of the first ever clients of Newell Strength way back in the days of the PIT and who would go on to be the second Coach after Gabe Lincoln at Newell Strength.

Drew now has his own training business down in New Orleans.

Man, time flies.

‘No One Cares What You Look Like’

I competed in my first bodybuilding show back in the spring of 2004, 15 years ago! Man, time flies…

 

It began as a challenge to myself but like all things, if you aren’t careful, a healthy pursuit can quickly become something else and take on a life of its own.

 

I matured in later contests and realized that it was the process, the journey, that is what it was all really about.  I was never cut out to be a ‘bodybuilder’, it was just something I did.

 

But like you, I struggled with body image issues for a very long time.  And even though I do all this mindset work and yada yada, even with all that, after my contest in 2014, I fell back into big time body image issues after the contests were complete.

 

That was until my Coach, Scott Abel, pointed out to me, that no one cares what I look like.  Everyone is concerned with themselves.  It was perfect timing as Devon and I were getting ready to go on a vacation to the beach.

 

Don’t fool yourself and let your ego trick you into thinking that you are trying to change your body so other people will be more impressed.

 

What is it really about?  Get real, is it more energy, being happier, more confident?

 

When it’s about the externals and the externals only, you are on the wrong path.

 

In this case, your EGO isn’t your AMIGO.

Why You Lost Weight and Still Weren’t Happy

I can look back 15 years and see a pattern throughout the 15 years about the times I was my most ‘ripped’ and honestly say that during many of those times I was my least happy.

Yup, ‘million dollar body’, 10 cent ‘energy’.

Now, I was able to learn a great deal both intellectually as well as spiritually and emotionally throughout those times.  But physically, I didn’t own my process, I was forcing my body rather than coaxing it.

And, I was starting from a vantage point that if ‘only I looked a certain way’, then I would be happy.  Because my ego lead me to believe that.

The truth is, people are attracted to enthusiastic energy which brings with it a sense of certainty.

The most attractive person in any room is the one that is most certain.

Happiness and energy are intimately tied together.  If you are waiting on happiness, then you are waiting on having great energy.

The key is to BE happy and then take the first step.  Knowing that your path is happiness will instantly raise your energy and then the ‘owning of the process’ will further enhance your energy as will bettering your fitness.

It’s a self feeding cycle.

But one that most people can’t see.

Simply deciding to make your life better (everything starts with a decision), should make you happier.  Decision means freedom of choice, choosing your path to go down.

Connect the dots to self-awareness, we are all here to learn in this one life we’ve been given.

You can lose all the weight you want, but if you weren’t happy all along, you won’t be happy when the scale says you are down.  Which means you will an unhappy, less energetic and moody version of your original self.

Read this again until the first dots are connected.

I Despise Moderation

Devon will tell you that I have an obsessive personality.

It has served me well and at times it has had to be called out.

But, I know through self-awareness that moderation doesn’t work for me. Be that in food, business, education, etc.

Take no offense (or take it if you want), but it has been my observation that people that live by the law of moderation typically get mediocre results in whatever areas they practice moderation in.

Moderation to me is similar to balance. Balance doesn’t get you anywhere, a life in harmony does. This means that at points certain areas will dominate your attention and at other times, other areas dominate, but it evens out.

I’d much rather (for multiple reasons, anti-moderation being one), eat one BIG meal per day than 4 small meals.

Go all in, whatever it is that you are doing, but remember to own it.

Mister May, Mr. Mike

We are thrilled to announce that our May member of the Month in Flemington was Mike Penyak.

Mike started with us as a Ripped Dad in our inaugural Ripped Dads contest in Flemington back in the fall of 2018.

And he was on fire during that time and decided that he wanted to keep the momentum going after those 6 weeks, which meant he became one of our founding members in Flemington.

He has gained muscle and lost inches and body fat.  More importantly, his mindset is operating at peak performance.  You can take a listen to his story right here:

A Breakthrough for Your Sleep

I was sitting in the classroom out in Tempe, Arizona, learning from the esteemed Charles Poliquin, a living legend in my eyes.

And before he proceeded to try and belittle me for 30 minutes in front of the classroom on day 2 of the course (long story; he is a genius but that doesn’t mean I want my sons to grow up to be like him), he spoke about sleep.

Charles runs around with the top doctors in different areas of specialization.  He told us that his sleep doctor friend had told him that the most important factor in the quality of your sleep was to have a consistent wake up time.

Simple right?  But what happens when that alarm clock goes off and all you want to do is hit snooze?

Invariably you do it, we’ve all done it.  But, did you know that when we do this we reset our sleep cycle?  Studies have now shown that snoozing for just a little bit, causes something called sleep inertia.

Sleep inertia takes 4 hours to ‘shake off’. Is 10 minutes of more beauty rest worth four hours of valuable day time?

If you struggle with this, then use the 5 second rule I wrote about last week.  When the alarm goes off, count backwards from 5 and say, ‘get up’.  Your logical brain will overcome the emotion of wanting more sleep.

Always try to practice the ‘slight edge’.

Re: Pour Out Your Cup

In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I discuss the next 5 rules that I live by and one of those rules happens to be the concept of ‘emptying your cup’.

If I were to look at programs I wrote for people 10 years ago, I’d be embarrassed.  But at the time, that was the best that I knew.

GL is Down 100!!

Two Friday mornings ago as I was walking in for my 6AM workout, GL was on his way out.  He came over and told me the news that he had officially lost 100 pounds!!!

We gave each other a big hug and it made me light up!

When GL started the first time around, almost two years ago, you could say that he failed.  He had modest improvements in his very first Ripped Dads contest, but he hadn’t truly flipped the switch yet.

He came back 6 months later and now look at him!

There are ups and downs, he’d be the first one to tell you that.

But you know what his key to success is????

It’s to show up, day after day, even if you had a slip up the day prior and focus on winning that day.

100 pounds in unfathomable to most people and if you thought about it all at once, you’d have no shot at achieving it, your brain would be overwhelmed.

Inch by inch, it’s a cinch.
