Trip (9)

Me Ear Nearly Exploded

10 days ago, we flew down to Naples to experience a good friend’s wedding. It was the first time that Devon and I were away from the boys for 2 whole nights.

Heading into the trip, I was still battling that damn head cold and I wasn’t thinking the morning of our departing flight to take some decongestant, heck, I even forgot to pack it in my carry on…

Well, upon the descent, the pressure was wreaking havoc on my sinuses and my right ear literally felt like it was going to explode. And the rest of the night I had an intense pressure headache (until I went out and loaded up on some medicine).

Here’s the thing: when I was in extreme discomfort, all I wanted to do was make it go away. I could have prevented the entire problem by taking more time to rest and by taking some medicine ahead of the flight.

Your health is the same way; what good is having all the riches in the world if you don’t have the fitness to enjoy them? You are going to pay for your health either now or later. And if its later, it’s going to cost you a lot more and in more ways than one.

My Trip Back to the Motherland

A week and a half ago, I flew out to Michigan.  It was the first time that I was back there in 20 years.

We moved here to Jersey from out there when I was 7 years old.

But, this was not a leisurely trip, nope.

It was for business, in particular a mastermind that I am in.

The flight out was a little bumpy, which only added to the issue of it being a really small plane.  My head was touching the ceiling when I walked down the aisle.

Luckily, the fellow next to me was nice.  We made a bit of small chat and then he got to his audiobook while I got to my old school books.

Anyhow, the next morning at the mastermind meeting, in walks this guy, Marty.  The very same guy that was sitting next to me on the plane.  Small world.

I walked over to say hi and he looked a little surprised.  If either of us prodded a little bit in our conversation, we would have figured out that we were in the same group (he just joined).

I was not surprised about how nice and cool he was on the plane once I saw that he was in our mastermind.  Birds of a feather flock together.

Find your tribe and stick to it.

Pumpkin Patch Pictures

2 or so weeks ago, Braxton and I went on his first field trip to the local pumpkin patch.

It was cool to see all the other parents there with their kids and I was able to meet some of Brax’s school friends.

Yet, I had a million things to do and being that this fell on a Wednesday, it was taking away one of my high focus days.

I could have focused on all those things and wished the time by or worse yet, I could have resented the moment.

But I didn’t.  I enjoyed it.  I got pictures that’ll last him and I a lifetime.

After all, life is about connecting and special little moments, not being busy being busy.

P.S-We have our people of fitness night party tomorrow, Friday, the 12th at the Flemington Newell Strength.  We’d love for you to come out and enjoy a drink (Skunktown Distillery) and have some pizza! No, you don’t have to be a member and yes, you can and should bring friends!

6,000 Feet Up, No Guard Rail

On the first Friday of our vacation to New Hampshire, we planned out a trip to the top of Mount Washington.

In case you are unfamiliar, it is the highest point on the east coast, topping out at just over 6,200 feet!

We each had sweatshirts on, despite it being 70 degrees at the base of the mountain; I had heard the weather can be quite unpredictable up there.

Well, on the drive up, the boys were both napping, which was good because it was one less thing for me to have to focus on. As we climbed up and up and up and passed the 3,000 foot elevation mark, the tree line disappeared.

What was left was no guard rail, no shoulder, a tight road and nothing but mountain. My palms began to sweat and I locked in, become hyper-aware of everything around me.

To be blunt, I was scared sh**less! The visions of plummeting to a fiery death were just that, visions. We obviously made it up and down and lived to tell about it.

Now, usually, I don’t let much get to me, I can control my breathing and thoughts to a good degree but when being ‘inches away from the edge’, my animal nervous system took over.

There were many lessons that I am going to write about from that drive up, but a takeaway point is this: yours and mine thoughts about future bad events aren’t real. The future does not exist, it’s just a part of our projected imagination. This means that all you fear is made up. ‘There is nothing to fear but fear itself’.

And if you don’t manage it, it can cripple your action taking.

And Then This Happened…

We were all set to fly back from our trip to Kentucky.  A 9AM flight meant we were going to be home by lunchtime.

We had to wake the boys up early, out of their slumber since we wanted to get to the airport by about 7.

This meant that they would be raring to go on the plane.  Brax is a good flier but Colt, he is at the age where he won’t sit still and wants to explore everything.

As were waiting to taxi out to the runway, the pilot gets on the speaker and says there is a 2 hour delay since Newark was having some heavy storms.  Devon and I looked at eachother and she said, ‘What does that mean?’  I said it meant we would be sitting here on the plane, trapped for the next two hours and then we would have an hour and a half flight.

Amazingly, they did what they never do, at least in my experience, and they let us off the plane to hang out in the airport.

The boys spent the majority of the time riding and playing on the moving walkway, Tank running on it like a treadmill.  People were getting such a kick out of them.  I couldn’t believe how fast the time went when were called to re-board the plane.

We made the most of it and Tank wound up napping on my lap for the entire flight.

That’s turning lemons into lemonade.

Re-framing is the most powerful skill you’ll ever come across.

Sunny and Smoked Workout

We had a great trip out to Kentucky last week with the boys, visiting my aunt and uncle.

On our first full day there, we spent about 6 hours out in the sun at different parks, playgrounds and splash pads for the boys.

We never thought we’d be there for that long, but when fun is being had, you just have to go with it.

I had planned on going to my friend’s gym in Cincinnati a little earlier in the day and he was expecting me.

Nonetheless, I went left for the 30 minute drive to his gym in my uncle’s pickup truck around 6 pm.

I was at capacity with a few stressors, not bad, but stressors: the day of travel the day before, a day in the sun and a new environment for us and the boys (remember that environment changes are always stressful, no matter whom you are).

However, I knew that to stay on track, I had to stick to my commitment to get my workout in. Part of the F-5 system I follow on the daily involves a fitness goal of getting a half a gallon of water per day at minimum and a good sweat.

Well, I got to John’s gym, warmed up and proceeded to have a mediocre workout at best. It had nothing to the with the gym, but rather that I was smoked. Back in the day, I would have tried to push through it. Now that I am wiser, on those types of days, I lighten the load and just have a goal of making it through the next set.

You can’t always have the best workout of your life.

And if that’s the case, you need to examine what the point of your workout routine is. Remember why you are following this fitness quest and stick with it. Is it to become a workout warrior or to enhance your life? And if so, what parts of your life?

The WW2 Tank We Found the Other Night

Two Fridays ago, we went back to our favorite Italian restaurant in a little town just over the bridge nearby.

We had some friends up for a week to stay at our house and thought this would be the perfect way to end their trip.

After dinner, we asked them if they wanted to go take a stroll around the abandoned complex nearby that Devon and I had visited just one week earlier.

We started to venture in and around the building when lo and behold, Old Mill Phil says to me, ‘Kyle, there’s a tank over there!’

And wouldn’t you know it, there was.  Turns out it was a WW2 tank.  I have no idea why it’s sitting in this abandoned building but it was cool as heck to see and tank pictures of.

I may have to submit it to Weird NJ.

The point being, I love to explore creepy places; if we hadn’t ventured back there we wouldn’t have the shared experience of finding a tank, something I’ll probably remember forever.

If you don’t explore life, you are going to miss a lot of ‘tanks’.

Do You Know What the Answer to ‘Overwhelm’ Is?

Do You Know What the Answer to ‘Overwhelm’ Is?

On our Sunday morning hike over in the mountains this week, Devon and I were having a heart to heart conversation.

She was letting me know that she was quite overwhelmed with life right now.

And who could argue with her?  She is a full-time teacher with a very active 14-month old son.

She is pregnant with number 2.

We are going to be moving into our new home within the month.

Life seems to pile on at times.  I am sure you are familiar with the feeling, right?

Well, I asked her, ‘Dev, what’s the answer to overwhelm?’

Being the good student that she is, she said, ‘I know, I know, it’s to be present.  I am thinking too far out into the future.’

While that may be, I was looking for something even simpler.  So  I said, ‘Yes, but the real answer to overwhelm is never more.’

Dax Moy taught me this long ago.  So simple, yet profound.  The brain wants to pile more and more on when it gets caught in the endless momentum of all the ‘to-do’s’ of life.

But the answer is never more stuff.  It’s to take a step back and do one thing and only one thing at a time.

You can’t do 10 things at once, you can try, but I’ll save you the time and tell you it won’t end up pretty.

You have a lot on your plate.  Life happens.  Sometimes what we need is a little R and R.

That won’t happen unless you plan for it though.  Do yourself a favor and write out a time this week when you are going to take 30 minutes for yourself.  30 minutes to just enjoy life and to breathe.

Never more my friend, never more.

Don’t Be an In-Betweener

Don’t Be an In-Betweener

Every Sunday morning is the same for us.

We go for a family hike up in the famous Sourland mountains.

And I am always on my quest to see a bear or a bobcat.  So last week, we went off towards the quarry.

That’s where I’ve been told that a large 600 pound black bear roams.

We didn’t quite make it that far because the Munch wanted to get out of his carrier and play with plants and sticks. So no bear for me, once again.

But on the way back, we encountered 4 adult hikers.

They weren’t just any adult hikers, they were ‘in-betweeners’.

It’s kind of a Seinfeld-like term that Devon came up with.

You see, we keep Dax and Mateena ‘off leash’.  They wear their electric collars.  They are two of the sweetest labs you will ever meet.

So normally people love them or are incredibly scared of them.

However, these four adults were in the middle.  Not scared, yet they showed no emotion when Dax went up to say hi.

Listen, the worst thing you can be in life is average or vanilla.  Pick a side, dammit!

Well, here is your chance not to be an in-betweener.

We are hosting our annual Kickball Charity Tournament on November 6th at 11am (it’s a Sunday).  It’s $10 to play. If you can’t play, you can still come out and hang out.  If you can’t come hang out, you can still donate:).

All the donations are going to Charlie Kroog, a fun loving 2 ½ year old boy.  I used to teach with Charlie’s mom.  If you think you have sh** going on, you don’t.  Not compared to Charlie anyhow.

You can read a short story about Charlie and make a donation here.
