Advice (5)

The Circle of B.S.

Unfortunately, the fitness industry is loaded with ‘fake fitness experts’.  I’d say 99/100 fitness professionals fall into this category.

Lucky for you, the Coaches at NS are your fiduciary fitness experts, always learning and acting with your best health in mind.

In today’s episode, I talk about how the circle of BS starts in fitness and faulty advice and what you need to watch out for.

If you don’t deeply know the truth of a concept, you will always be reliant on an outside source.

Alphabet Soup

10 years ago, I was on a quest to become the greatest strength Coach of all time.

I was rapidly investing in courses, Coaches, seminars, books and dvds.

And I wouldn’t change that for anything, it molded me into who I’ve become currently.

It got to the point that I had doctors asking me for advice on things concerning the body (some still do), which is great and I only point that out to tell you the level of knowledge I acquired.

I had some 20-odd letters after my name, the alphabet soup, which included exclusive certifications, secondary schooling and on and on.

I have let all but my master’s degree expire (because once you have that, you have it for good).

Why?

Because they didn’t mean anything.  Over the years, as I matured as a person, I realized that simplifying all that I knew was where the true mastery was.

If you can’t explain concepts to a third grader (with short attention spans, with their level of vocabulary and then having them apply what you taught), then you haven’t mastered it and I would argue that you have a menial understanding of the subject matter.

Be careful of all the ‘fake fitness experts’ out there.  They are a dime a dozen

Mom Was Right About the Mattress

Two Saturdays ago, we had a township dumpster pass.  It’s always nice to get rid of a bunch of crap that is sitting around taking up space.

The universe abhors a vacuum but if your vacuum is full of clutter, then you have no space for anything new and better to enter.

Anyhow, after loading up the truck with our load and dropping it off, I drove over to my parents to pick up some stuff for them.

I loaded up the couch and a few boxes and then my mom reminded me that I could take the heavy mattress that Devon and I had stored there a few years ago.  So, we lugged it up the steps and proceeded t plop it on top of all the other stuff.

My mom told me to strap it down but I told her that it was heavy enough and I was only going a short distance and driving slowly at that.

Well, about a half a mile away from the entrance, out flew the mattress.  Thank god no one was behind me!

I did a loopty-loop and got out, into the middle of the road to load it back up.  There was no foul because there was no harm.

Yet, I tried to take the quick route and the easier way when I should have just heeded the advice of my mom.

Sometimes we need to just listen and apply, especially when the words are coming from someone older and wiser.

It’s Not What You Comprehend, It’s What You Retain

It’s Not What You Comprehend, It’s What You Retain

I am going to let you in on a little secret of mine.

But you have to promise not to tell anyone!

Ok, here it is:  when I learn something valuable, I teach it and implement it immediately, like that same day-immediately.

That’s it?

Yup, that’s it.  So many people go to seminars and learn and get all jazzed up but never take the shrink wrap off of their ideas.  They never implement.

Just last week, a friend and mentor of sorts of mine, Roy G Biv, was giving me some nifty pointers and advice.  I made sure I took action that very night on the two things he had taught me.

If I had waited, they would have become just some other cool ideas that never saw the light of day.

Every time I learn a new Mind Map technique or style of writing or exercise, I teach them or put them to use in the very next session.

Teaching is the greatest learning tool we have.  Teaching is how you implement.

Teaching will cement ideas into your nervous system in ways that mere comprehension never can and never will.

Comprehension is what everyone does.  No one retains much these days.  Be different, start retaining the lessons you are learning in life.

In December’s Mind Map workshop, I am going to be teaching YOU some very cool things that you will implement the very same night to understand your brain more and to unleash some hidden powers within that you never knew you had.  You can register for one of the 6 spots here: http://kylenewell.com/december

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Most people greatly overestimate what they can do in a few months but greatly underestimate what they can do in 5 years.

Most people’s ideas never make it out of their head into reality.

Most ideas go to the graveyard.

But it’s easy to be enthusiastic about a new idea.  Novelty is the greatest aphrodisiac.

I’ve come across a lot of people that ask me for advice or coaching on start-ups of some sort or another and you’d be shocked at how few people stick with their idea past the two or three month mark.

They fail to realize that all overnight successes take 12 years (at least!).

You aren’t most people though.  I want you to be different.

The first year we held our Thanksgiving morning workout, we had 4 people show up.

The second year (I wasn’t there because I had just ruptured my patellar tendon for a second time) there were 14 people.

The third year we had 60 people.

And just this past week, we had 100 people at the TG charity workout!

If more people would develop ‘sticktoitiveness’, they would realize all their dreams.

I want you to think long and hard about a 5 year projection for yourself and commit to it this coming year.  Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

You might surprise yourself, but you won’t surprise me because I already believe in you.

We still have a few openings in our next edition of Ripped Dads which begins next week.  If you are looking to get back on track or maybe your husband is looking to get back on track, then you should check out the application here: http://www.newellstrength.com/men-2/
