The Benefits of a Flexible ‘Diet’

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a Yankees game with a great friend of mine.

He got us box seats and it was quite a treat, all inclusive.

The spread was amazing and you better believe I went up 3, maybe four times!

And normally during my regular routine week, I don’t have dessert during the week.

But this was a special occasion and life is to be enjoyed.

Plus, with fasting, I have all the flexibility in the world.  Even if I ‘go off course’, I am not gonna get out of shape with just one meal.

With that in mind, I piled up some cookies and put some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right on top.

Fitness is to enhance your life, not become your life.  I’ve deprived myself and learned the hard way in the past….

Enjoy the special experiences of life and realize that flexibility is key to any long term success.

Things Don’t Happen to You, They Happen for You

I just finished writing another entry in the book to Braxton and Colton.

The message was that things don’t happen to you, they happen for you.

The quality of your life will come down to the quality of the questions you ask.

The quality of the questions you ask is your ability to reframe any situation.

When things happen to you, you are the victim.

When you believe that everything happens for you, you are the VICTOR!

Why You Lost Weight and Still Weren’t Happy

I can look back 15 years and see a pattern throughout the 15 years about the times I was my most ‘ripped’ and honestly say that during many of those times I was my least happy.

Yup, ‘million dollar body’, 10 cent ‘energy’.

Now, I was able to learn a great deal both intellectually as well as spiritually and emotionally throughout those times.  But physically, I didn’t own my process, I was forcing my body rather than coaxing it.

And, I was starting from a vantage point that if ‘only I looked a certain way’, then I would be happy.  Because my ego lead me to believe that.

The truth is, people are attracted to enthusiastic energy which brings with it a sense of certainty.

The most attractive person in any room is the one that is most certain.

Happiness and energy are intimately tied together.  If you are waiting on happiness, then you are waiting on having great energy.

The key is to BE happy and then take the first step.  Knowing that your path is happiness will instantly raise your energy and then the ‘owning of the process’ will further enhance your energy as will bettering your fitness.

It’s a self feeding cycle.

But one that most people can’t see.

Simply deciding to make your life better (everything starts with a decision), should make you happier.  Decision means freedom of choice, choosing your path to go down.

Connect the dots to self-awareness, we are all here to learn in this one life we’ve been given.

You can lose all the weight you want, but if you weren’t happy all along, you won’t be happy when the scale says you are down.  Which means you will an unhappy, less energetic and moody version of your original self.

Read this again until the first dots are connected.

Perfect Procrastination

I realized in 1997, when I used to shoot 500 jump shots per day that perfect didn’t exist.

I would take 25 shots per round and sometimes I would get hot and maybe hit 21 or 22 but 25 of 25 didn’t happen.

I wasn’t trying to be perfect, I was just trying to get better.

And that is the approach we believe in at Newell Strength.

Perfection often masquerades around as procrastination.

Listen up: imperfect action beats procrastination any day of the week.

In life, good is good enough.

Start your journey today.

The New Stephen King Book

The main book I was reading last Friday on the beach was the new Stephen King book, The Outsider.

Being the horror buff that I am, it’s hard for me to believe that I’ve never read one of his books.  I’ve seen the movies but that’s about it.

Even though I’ve never read one of his books, I am and have been a huge fan of his art.  He is prolific and one of the best of all time.

He wrote his first novel, Carrie, while working full-time in the public school system up in New England.

How’d he do it?  Simple, he wrote any chance he had.  He didn’t wait for the perfect time.

In his book, On Writing, he talks about he writes 2,500 words per day, no matter what.  Some people will say, ‘Yeah, of course he can do that, he’s Stephen King.’

Whereas the more appropriate way to look at it would be, ‘He’s Stephen King because he writes 2,500 words per day.’

Just some food for thought.

Your Main Problem is That You Think You Shouldn’t Have Any

Your Main Problem is That You Think You Shouldn’t Have Any

While eating a nice grass fed, organic cheeseburger the other night, I had a Tony Robbins documentary on in the background.

I have long been a HUGE fan of Robbins’ work.  ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ is one of my top 5 all-time books and was THE book that got everything started for me.

Devon and I even stayed at his resort in Fiji for our honeymoon 5 years ago.

His message is always relevant to the listener IF the student is ready to accept the truth.  And that was once again the case in his documentary when he told the crowd: You wanna know what your main problem is?  Your main problem is that you don’t think you should have any of the problems that you have.

Think about that for a second.  The nature of the mind is to not want problems, yet we cannot grow without problems, failure and challenge.

The winner’s mind seeks out and embraces problems.  If you avoid problems at all costs, you are living small.

Were you put here on this earth to live big or play small?

The purpose of life I believe, is growth.  You cannot stay the same.  You are either regressing or growing.

The very law of momentum in life means that it’s impossible to stay put.  Yes, you can rest for a few minutes to smell the roses, like the sherpa that is climbing the mountain.  But like the sherpa, you must decide to keep going.

The higher up you go, the more important it will be to rest and recharge.

Speaking of recharging, Dana is running an awesome special for her FST sessions for the month of December: buy 2 get one free.

Get something different this year for your family members.  You can even use that extra session on yourself to recharge.

I have tried many different types of recovery and relaxation methods, but this is by far my favorite! You can email her at dana@newellstrength.com

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Most people greatly overestimate what they can do in a few months but greatly underestimate what they can do in 5 years.

Most people’s ideas never make it out of their head into reality.

Most ideas go to the graveyard.

But it’s easy to be enthusiastic about a new idea.  Novelty is the greatest aphrodisiac.

I’ve come across a lot of people that ask me for advice or coaching on start-ups of some sort or another and you’d be shocked at how few people stick with their idea past the two or three month mark.

They fail to realize that all overnight successes take 12 years (at least!).

You aren’t most people though.  I want you to be different.

The first year we held our Thanksgiving morning workout, we had 4 people show up.

The second year (I wasn’t there because I had just ruptured my patellar tendon for a second time) there were 14 people.

The third year we had 60 people.

And just this past week, we had 100 people at the TG charity workout!

If more people would develop ‘sticktoitiveness’, they would realize all their dreams.

I want you to think long and hard about a 5 year projection for yourself and commit to it this coming year.  Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

You might surprise yourself, but you won’t surprise me because I already believe in you.

We still have a few openings in our next edition of Ripped Dads which begins next week.  If you are looking to get back on track or maybe your husband is looking to get back on track, then you should check out the application here: http://www.newellstrength.com/men-2/

You Won’t Believe What Her Doctor Said to Her

You Won’t Believe What Her Doctor Said to Her

This past Monday, I went out to get some firewood from the front and to check the mail.

As I was strolling back into the house,  a neighbor, Stacey, stopped me to talk for a few minutes.

I actually graduated high school with Stacey.

Her and Devon have recently struck up a casual friendship and Devon has been telling me how her heart melts for this girl.

Stacey has never really said much besides hello to me.

But I could tell she had something on her mind.  You see, she is pregnant with number 2 and she had already gained quite a bit of weight AFTER having her 3 year old son.

She is a stay at home mother and she admitted that her stress was through the roof.

She is overwhelmed like so many others out there.  When she had to get rid of her cat, she told me she cried for days and was depressed.

The reason she had to get rid of the cat was because her son was allergic.

So she goes to her doctor to see if he can help with her weight that just continues to climb.  And she tells him that has gained about 10 more pounds since she had to get rid of her cat because her stress was chronically high.

(Remember from Mind Map that separation from a mammal causes great pain, that’s why breakups are so tough).

The doctor looks at her and says, ‘Well, unless the cat was eating your food and sharing your plate with you, then that’s impossible.’

You can’t make this stuff up.

Just because they have the title, don’t expect most doctors to be able to help you with your stress and weight issues.

We wrapped up the convo by Stacey telling me that she wants to lose 80 pounds.  Yet, she admitted that in the past, when she set a goal to lose 15, it was daunting.

Like any goal, you have to break it down into smaller and smaller chunks.  I told Stacey we would do it 5 pounds at a time and we would further break those 5 pounds down to five, 1 pound losses.

The brain can’t function with overwhelm at the forefront.  And the answer to overwhelm is never more.

If you are stuck in life with your goals.  You know where you want to go but not a clue on how to take the first step, then for a limited time, I am taking one 30-minute Mind Map session per week.  You can get on the waiting list here: http://www.newellstrength.com/mindmap

If you have a purely nutrition and diet issue in which you can’t figure it out, then you can book a consult with Dana to see if you are a good fit for her nutrition coaching program.  It ain’t cheap, but that’s a good thing, because cheap never really works.  You can apply here: https://newellstrength.wufoo.com/forms/z12m7co91urc4j8/
