Member of the Month for Hillsborough: Geoff Arlen

I can remember the first time Geoff ever came to Newell Strength back in 2012.  He came to try it out with long time member, Frank.

Geoff was busy, having his own law firm, but he was going to be getting married and wanted to be in the best shape that he could possibly be.

He achieved that and as life happens, he stopped for a period of time with us at Newell Strength.

But then, after having kid #2, Jackson, he decided that he, being an older dad, needed to make his own fitness and health a priority.

So, he started back up and he is on fire.  He makes it in at 5 or 6 am before his busy day with family and business starts.  And as you’ll see in the video, little things like playing with the kids on the floor and then getting up, 20 times per night, have become easy.

That’s what it’s all about!

You can check Geoff’s video out here: https://youtu.be/u8GqEDm8TcU

Keep inspiring Geoff!

‘I Quit’

In 2010, I almost moved out to Idaho to work as a strength and conditioning Coach at Boise State.

I was burnt out, one of the many times early on that I almost packed it in.

But in this instance, I am not referring to having almost shutting down Newell Strength.

Nope, I am talking about when I made the decision to quit being a ‘personal trainer’.

Obviously, fitness was my passion and profession, but after having seen the piss poor quality of personal trainers out there, in the land of Globo Gym, I decided I would no longer classify myself as a personal trainer.

Heck, I can bet most of our clients having a better knowledge than 90% of the fake experts out there.

Anyhow, that is when I decided that I was going to BE The Human Strength Expert, of which Coaching was going to be my calling.

A Coach has much more of an influence on mind, body and spirit than any ‘trainer’ does.

That is why I always refer to our team of Coaches as just that, Coaches.

There you have it, the time that I quit being a personal trainer and never looked back.

The $50 Burger

Have you ever had a $50 burger?

Well, I have, and let me tell you, it was damn good!

Was it the expectations that made it taste better?  Sure, that’s part of it.

Was it the quality of the meat?  You bet.

Was it the superior experience and service?  Yup, that’s part of what you are paying for.

In fitness, you can’t get the $50 burger while paying the price of a Mickey D’s ¼ pounder.

I can’t tell you how to invest your money, but I can tell you that Newell Strength is the $50 burger.

There’s a lot more that goes into it than the training (although, we are the best at that too, by a long shot).

Just some food for thought.

Head Trainer and Suzy Caught, Red Handed!

About a month ago, I was heading over to the Flemington location for a meeting with Devon and Dana.

When I arrived, the joint looked empty. I went in through one of the doors and looked around, but didn’t see any signs of anyone.

As I continued to walk around, I heard groaning and moaning coming from behind the closed, office door.

It sounds like….at least two people having some fun and pleasure.

So, I ripped the door open and lo and behold….

Coach Mike and Suzy Homemaker were going to town….

With a dozen donuts from D and D.

Get your mind out of the gutter.

The point is, yes, we ‘get it’.  Fitness isn’t supposed to BE your life, its supposed to enhance your life.

The team at Newell Strength eats burgers, fries, donuts and yes, we even drink beer.

What does this mean?  It means complete understanding of you, the trainee.

The Echo Chamber of Stupid Fitness Advice

I had never heard of an echo chamber until this year’s election.

Basically, it’s when no outside voice or opinion can be heard or is allowed ‘in’ and the same information, correct or not, get’s ‘echoed’ back and forth.

And oh boy…how this sure does apply to the wonderful field of fitness.

Here are just some of the ‘echoes’ that your Tool Boy, big box gym, personal trainers are sure to be telling people coming into the new year.

  • Just work harder, that’ll work. Use all the will power you can muster because obviously you have just been weak-willed in the past.

  • Cut out carbs and count your calories. This will do the trick (and not to mention it’s pretty fun to carry around tupperware and a scale everywhere you go).

  • Make sure you do 30 minutes of ‘cardio’ after your machine based weight training session . This will ensure you are in the fat-burning zone and I know you have all the time in the world to spend here in my gym, like a human guinea pig.

  • Do what I do and you will look like me. My six-pack has NOTHING to do with having the right genetics and weighing 175 pounds soaking wet.

  • Train arms and abs one day and back and chest on another day. You can skip legs except for throwing in a few sets of leg presses a couple of times per week.

Man how I cringe when I hear these bums talk and spew this mis-information and ‘fake news’ of fitness.

It is a choice what you choose to believe.

But remember, what you believe for a long period of time will become a part of your faith (faith doesn’t just have a religious meaning).

Be careful and mindful of echo chambers and tool boys.

Here’s a way to save someone you love from the fake news of fitness;  get them a 3-Week Test Drive at Newell Strength.  It’s the best $99 gift you’ll ever give:) http://www.newellstrength.com/3wtd

Don’t be a Sheeple, Don’t You Dare Fall for the Aerobic Fallacy

Don’t be a Sheeple, Don’t You Dare Fall for the Aerobic Fallacy

It’s Sunday, which means as you read this, I am out on my weekly hike with Suzy, Munchie, Dax and Mateena.

And do you know why we go every Sunday morning?

Because we love it!  In refreshes our minds and spirits and to us, it’s not forced exercise.

So many people fall into the trap of traditional thinking.  In the fitness world, that means that they ‘have to, must, need to’ do 30 minutes of ‘cardio’ at the gym.

Despite the fact that they hate it and find no pleasure in using an elliptical for 30 minutes to an hour.

The brain can’t and will not form habit around stuff it doesn’t find pleasurable.

Will power is ‘anti-habit’.  (This is fact, not my opinion).

Unless you absolutely love cardio as you know it, the today, I am your savior.

I was going through some very old articles that I had written for a book project I was hired to help with and I came across the infamous ‘Aerobic Fallacy’ article that I wrote in 2008.

Be prepared to leave your cardio beliefs behind.

You can read the entire article over at the NS website. http://www.newellstrength.com/the-aerobic-fallacy/

Let me know what ya think.
