Who Can You Help?

About 5 years ago, I added a bumble bee tattoo on my left arm.  

 

It’s hard to spot but when you focus in, you can see it.  

 

It represents a concept from an old mastermind group that I was in where you never know the power of your words or energy towards another person, so be sure to reach out with a word of encouragement from time to time.

 

And that is all I am reminding you to do.  Be someone else’s Coach today.  No, you don’t have to get into the weeds with them, just offer them a boost.

 

Afterall, a Coach is someone that can help get someone from point A to point B, point B representing a place that they can’t get to on their own (after the term ‘stagecoach’).

 

When you become too focused on the self, troubles arise.  When you shine your focus on someone else, your worries melt away.

 

The same door you give through is the same door you receive from.

Fax About Focus

I remember when I first read the line, ‘What you focus on expands.’

Bam!  It hit me square in the jaw.  So profound, yet so simple.  

While you cannot control your thoughts, let alone anyone else’s thoughts, you can control what you focus on.  

For a long time, I trained myself to be like the Terminator, in my own mind.  As soon as I felt an emotion I didn’t like, I would ‘clear the calculator to zero’ and direct my attention elsewhere.  That is both a good and a bad quality depending on the circumstance.

Yet, I knew that I had a choice in what I focused on.  Clearing of the calculator was not good when it comes to deep, human relationships.  

Emotions are like lighter fluid for your focus.  Think about a time when a partner broke up with you.  You probably went through the gamut of ‘What if….’.  That is emotion + focus gone crazy.  Take those ‘what ifs’ and throw them out the window because they are an endless rabbit hole.  

The ability to stay focused on the prize is one of the hardest things to do.  It requires that you constantly connect to why you are doing what you are doing.  It’s very easy to lose focus on the bright shiny new object.  

Bright, shiny, new objects and unchained emotion are the two things you must be on guard for when it comes to remaining focused on the right things.  The goal is to keep the goal, the goal.

How Long Can You Hold Your Focus For?

Two weekends ago, Devon was away on a much deserved girls weekend, which meant I was blessed with the chance to really be 100 percent dialed in with the kids.

It’s easy somehow to not be present all the way when there are two of you there.

Anyhow, I decided I was going to teach the boys how to focus sunlight through a magnifying glass onto a leaf to create fire.  

Now, we didn’t actually start a fire, but I did want them to see the leaf smoke and burn a hole.  

When Brax was doing it, he was wanting to make the ray of light bigger and he kept wanting move it around, to which I explained that it would never catch if he was doing that.

The light had to be focused to the size of a pinhead and it had to hold its position.

This is like your mind.  

If you can hold your focus and attention, day after day, on that which you want to become, you will have success.

If you are easily distracted, then you will only be successful at becoming distracted.

Mental Toughness Monday: I Challenge You

A week ago, when I was going for my Monday morning weighted vest walk, I was pondering what to talk about in my Monday video.  

Sometimes toughness can be taught and conveyed as force and pushing yourself.  Sometimes that is appropriate. 

Then there are times when toughness is simply choosing the path less traveled. 

I challenge you this week to have a focal point for your attention when you start getting caught up in the fear and divisiveness that seems to be around every corner during these trying times.

I want that focal point to be something positive, something you have control over, someone you love, something you are grateful for. 

How is that toughness?  Because, your thoughts are a habit.  Habits are hard to override, especially thoughts, because our brain is hardwired for the negative, it’s a survival mechanism.  

So that’s my challenge to you this week.  Focus on something great in life everytime the fear goblin tries to rear his ugly head.

You Must Focus on the 25%

A week and a half ago, after I got word that Governor Murphy was going to announce and be okay with the agreement they approached me with two days earlier, I made a video.

I rarely show tears of joy on video, but I couldn’t help it.

I wanted to share the news with the community and the people that were following the story.  Last I saw it had almost 15, 000 views and about a 100 shares, pretty amazing stuff.

Anyhow, friends and family informed me of the incoming haters that were trolling on the video.  But here’s what I told them…..

‘In life, 25% of the people are always going to love you, no matter what.  25% of people are going to strongly dislike you, even hate you, no matter what.  Then there are 25% that are going to not like you and then grow to like you and finally there are 25% that are going to like you and then not like you, for one reason or the other. I focus on the 25% that love me’. 

I believe too many people are focused on the 75% that won’t go into battle with you anyhow.  They  fall victim to the fear of being judged by them and therefore, hated on.

I don’t pay those people any mind, I don’t read their comments, I simply ‘let go of my end of the rope’.  The funny thing is, they are giving me their most valuable thing; their time and attention.  

Focus on your 25%, you may not agree on everything, but they will still always love you no matter what.

Monday Mindset: It Happens For You

I remember when I was heading under the knife for my second patellar tendon rupture in the span of 3 years.

Right before the lights went out, Dr. Gecha said, ‘Kyle, I am so, so sorry this happened again.  But I promise I’ll fix you up as good as new.’

To which I replied, in a drugged stupor, ‘It’s okay Doc, I got this.  It’ll allow me to help more people.’

I didn’t think much of it, but when I went in for my follow-up two weeks later, he asked me about that.  He couldn’t believe I didn’t have the victim mindset.  He even asked me if I would speak to his group of surgeons about mindset and mental strength.

You see, in life, you can either believe that things happen to you or that they happen for you.  It’s only the difference of 1 word, but its light years apart as far as mindset.

And the cool thing is that it’s up to you which one you choose to focus on….

The Anti-Resolution Plan

 

While at a party the other day, someone said to me, ‘I am done with making resolutions!  They never work and they only ever make me feel like a loser.’

 

She was right, they don’t work.

 

Resolutions are usually made on a whim and they are usually based on an extreme amount of willpower that mere mortals don’t normally possess.

 

Think about what resolution means.  It means to resolve a problem.

 

A problem has a solution.

 

A solution is a plan.

 

The reason resolutions don’t work is because there is no plan of action.  Saying you want to do something is meaningless.

 

Action is where it’s at.

 

And if your undertaking is something you are dreading, you are doomed to fail.  You don’t transform your life by doing something you despise.

 

The anti-resolution program is to do it differently than everyone else.

 

You focus on habits and systems and you don’t do anything that involves boatloads of will power.

 

The anti-resolution plan means creating a map ahead of time.

 

Planning is one of the most important things you can do, a quadrant 2 activity.

It’s The Very Last Day of This Year Which Means…

It’s NYE.

 

It’s the end of one year and the cusp of a new year.

 

LIfe is moving by whether you realize it or not.

 

Time will stand still for no one.

 

You are either going to be excited about 2017 or you are going to be ‘blah’.

 

Where are you going to place your focus this coming year?

 

In a recent recording of the ULYIS podcast, I used this quote from James Patterson:

 

“Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls…are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered.”

There is more to life that work.  You cannot get back precious moments missed with loved ones.

 

The key is finding out how to achieve professional success without dropping the glass balls.

 

I have a system that works for me, which I developed after years of struggling with this.  And I’d tell you my system but I want you think about this for you.  It will ‘stick’ more if you develop it for  your own unique needs.

 

I’ll leave you with a hint.

 

Don’t think perfect balance all the time, rather, think counterbalance.

I Implore You to Explore You

Yup, I was channeling my inner Mike Tyson with that headline.

 

I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to implore your, inspire you or tell you a story with today’s message.

So, I am going to attempt to do all 3:).

 

On Christmas day, I sent out an email with an article I wrote about setting your goals for 2017.

This is going to be your year…if you make the decision to have it be your greatest year yet.

 

That sounds scary and it is.  Yes, you may fall short.  Yes, it is going to require a lot of work.  Yes, it will require you to get outside of your comfort zone time and time again.

 

But what’s the alternative?

 

When I was coming into my own zone in 2007, shortly after the rectal ulcer story from yesterday, I had signs printed up and I hung them everywhere.

 

The most important place I wrote messages to myself of becoming great were on my bedroom ceiliing.  Every morning and every night I stared at those things.  I meditated on them.

 

I put vision board pictures on my ceiling.

 

I couldn’t not pay attention and focus.  And that focus led to my framing of each circumstance and situation in my life.

 

That was the year my life changed forever.

 

If you think about goals, that don’t mean diddly.  Everyone thinks about goals.

 

If you write them down, that’s a little better.  But most people that write down goals never look at them again.

 

However, if you carry your goals with you and make them a daily thing to look at, you will stand apart, most importantly you will stand apart from your old way of thinking.

 

It’s not easy, but I am not asking you to be average.

 

I am imploring you to BE great in 2017.

 

You can do it.  I believe in you.
