Game (10)

Arnold Said It, So It Must Be Right…

A couple of weeks ago, I watched the new Netflix documentary, Game Changers, about animal protein and such.

It was definitely thought provoking, but no matter what you think of the content, Arnold, who was one of the producers of the movie, had this to say about switching to more of a plant based diet:

‘Don’t tell someone they can’t eat meat anymore, because first off, people aren’t going to like that (they won’t form a habit around it) and they will reject it with a big F-U.  Simply ask them to see if they go one day per week without animal protein’.

Here we have perhaps the greatest fitness icon of all-time with some great wisdom into how habits are formed.

Don’t go ALL-IN, it rarely works.  Start to dabble and build a foundation, keeping your approach ‘alive’ as needed.

And yes, I think it’s worth the watch, as long as you have an open mind:)

The Benefits of a Flexible ‘Diet’

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a Yankees game with a great friend of mine.

He got us box seats and it was quite a treat, all inclusive.

The spread was amazing and you better believe I went up 3, maybe four times!

And normally during my regular routine week, I don’t have dessert during the week.

But this was a special occasion and life is to be enjoyed.

Plus, with fasting, I have all the flexibility in the world.  Even if I ‘go off course’, I am not gonna get out of shape with just one meal.

With that in mind, I piled up some cookies and put some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right on top.

Fitness is to enhance your life, not become your life.  I’ve deprived myself and learned the hard way in the past….

Enjoy the special experiences of life and realize that flexibility is key to any long term success.

What Are You Expecting?

Devon and I have been married for over 8 years now.
In that time, there have been homes, businesses, dogs, kids, surgeries and the list goes on.
Like you, life is made up of memories.
Heading into this month, I was expecting nothing but to afford myself the time to be present at home during Emma’s first month in this world.
I wasn’t expecting to get a lot of ‘work’ done or to start any new ventures.  I wanted to be present, that was my only expectation.  And I’d say I have succeeded.  I had no expectations of outcomes and therefore, disappointment of any sort could not exist.
All of our disappointments come from expectations not met.
So, what happens when your only expectation is BE within the flow of life?

Amazing Discoveries From My Old Notebook

In my office shed, I have notebooks dating back a decade.
In those notebooks, I have notes from my thoughts, books, DVDs and seminars.  I was and remain a serious student of life and my craft.
I fully realize that the 10,000 hour rule does apply and I chuckle when people of the next generation think they can short cut their way to world class expertise.
Anyhow, for this episode, I decided to go back through one of those old notebooks and shoot from the hip.  And there are some gems I share with you.

Today is Devon’s Due Date

Well, today is the day. That is, assuming the baby didn’t come early. But I don’t know that as of the time of this writing.

Either way, life will change.

And change is the one thing people fear most, yet it is the one constant in life.

People tell us, #3 is a real game changer. Yes, I am sure it will be, but so was #1 and #2.

All changes in life revolve around relationships when you actually think about it. A new baby, a new marriage, a new colleague, a new client, a new relationship with yourself.

Embrace the change. It’s coming at you either way.

And as far as the baby, I’ll be sure to post something up on social media with name, gender, etc.:)

Confidence and Failure Go Hand in Hand

When I was in high school, I used to take and chart 500 jump shots per day.  I still have those old charts at my parents house somewhere.

Even after doing this for 2 years, in a game situation, I wouldn’t average above a 50% shooting percentage.

You might be thinking that that was a lot of work without too much payoff.  You’d be wrong.

Yes, failure is built into the ‘game’ but through that failure and all those thousands of shots taken, I became extremely confident in my shot, which carried over to other aspects in my life.

If you want to grow your confidence, you have to be ready to fail, it’s the only way.  In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I discuss this very concept.  You can take a listen here: http://kylenewell.com/inner-strength-podcast/

Teeing Off With a Putter

Do you remember when Tiger teed off with his putter?

Neither do I, because it never happened.

And there is a reason for that.

Different circumstances call for different skill sets, not just on the golf course, but in life.

If all you have is a hammer then everything is going to look like a nail to you.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about the concept of stacking….

Your stack is simply the set of skills you’ve developed in your life in the order of which you accumulated and become more proficient at them.

I’m not a golf guy by any means, but there is a lot to be learned from observing the game.

Life is your classroom, take what is useful and discard the rest.

A Rock and a Baseball Bat Are a Stupid Idea

While taking the pups for our morning walk on our pitch black street, a memory popped into my head.

Not really sure why it decided to visit me, but it did.

It was 1993 or so and my best friend at the time and I were at our older brother’s all-start summer baseball game.

We had one of those little wooden souvenir bats that you get as giveaways at Major League games.

Well, the game we were watching was a blow out, so we decided it would be a good idea to have our own home run derby off to the side with our little bat.

The problem was, we didn’t have a ball small enough to match the bat.

So what’d we do?

We decided to use rocks.

We were only about 10 feet away from each other to make it easier to see the rocks coming in to hit.

I was, unfortunately, the one to pitch first.

BAM!  First pitch; line drive right off my forehead!

It could have been much worse if it hit me in the eye, but it didn’t.  It left me with a huge, bloody welt right in the smack-dab middle of my forehead.  Game over.

What were we expecting?  Dumb ideas produce dumb results.

At least we were smart enough to leave the game alone after that.

Are you heading into the beginning of this year with the same dumb plans that have gotten you exactly nowhere the past few years?

You must recognize your thought patterns and then actively change them.  Otherwise the brain will just go on autopilot and repeat the self-same thing, over and over.

P.S-On January 16th, our first ever Anti-Resolution program at Newell Strength begins.  We just got an influx of new potential members for it, so I’d estimate that we have 3 or so spots remaining.  You can apply for this once a year, 30-days for $99 challenge here:  https://goo.gl/forms/JP73A2bomPM1JYoE2

What is Success to You? And What are You Willing to Do?

What is Success to You? And What are You Willing to Do?

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”

When’s the last time you put in the extra time?

Here’s a link to an article I just finished up for ya, enjoy!

A Real Life Game of Frogger

A Real Life Game of Frogger

There used to be a video game in the 70’s or 80’s called Frogger.

The purpose was to get across the road without getting hit by a truck.

And if you are a Seinfeld fan, you surely remember George Costanza playing a real life game of Frogger while ironically, trying to get an arcade gaming console of the actual Frogger across the street.

I thought it was hilarious.  He would move up, come back, gain ground, lose ground, 2 steps forward, 2 steps back, all the to avoid the oncoming traffic.

Well, last week, Devon sent me to ShopRite at peak time.  When I say peak time, I mean when the rest of the world is there.  A perfect recipe for disaster for my introverted self.

I wore my pseudo disguise: a hoodie, baseball cap and sunglasses (yup, I left my sunglasses on the entire time).

Of course, I saw not one, not two but 3 people that I knew.  All nice people, but I just couldn’t get into a draining conversation.

So a game of Frogger ensued at ShopRite.  I would turn one corner, catch a glimpse of person A walking up that aisle, and quickly do a 360 to go back around the other corner.

I would make it to the end of that row to see person B approaching which meant I would quickly duck down the next nearest aisle.  Person A again, then person C and so on.

I hadn’t been spotted.  I quickly made my way to the self-checkout and slid out the side door.  I know sometimes I am neurotic with social settings, but I was on a mission.

Devon and Munchie were waiting for me to pick them up at the playground.

When I arrived, Devon asked what took me so long.  I didn’t realize I was gone for nearly an hour (although in my defense I did pick up firewood too).

I tried explaining my real life game of Frogger but she just shook her head.

Where have you been running into obstacles in life?

And once you locate those obstacles, are you going to approach them or go down a different path?

Food for thought…
