The Power of Your Morning Routine

15 years ago, as a struggling student teacher and aspiring bodybuilder, I remember getting up every day at 4 or 430 to begin my morning routine.

 

Yes, at the time, I lived at home with my parents and my mom would often get up to find me studying or drinking coffee, listening to music that made me feel good.

 

My morning routine has always been the cornerstone of my life.  When my morning routine is on point, my life is better.  Point. Blank. Period.

Monday Morning Mindset: Your Pain

In the spring of 2007, I walked into my grandmother’s nursing home and told her goodbye.

 

No, it wasn’t her time to pass, but I was embarking on my 4 month journey to get ready for that spring’s bodybuilding competitions and I was adamant that I would not let any negative forces into my world.

 

So, that meant that for that period of time, I would not have contact with her.  I know it sounds terrible now, but you see, my grandmother (a great lady), could be a complainer at times.

 

In fact, in addition to her, I also cut off one of my best friends for that period of time because he too, would infuse negative words into my head.

 

In life, you need to know when it’s time to stop verbalizing your pain.  Your words and thoughts are like a radio frequency that will attract back exactly the messages you are sending out.

 

Allow a small period of time to vent your frustrations and then drop them, they  aren’t serving you.

 

Do  you want to be the victor or the victim in life?

Member Showcase: Casey Ransone

Casey and I grew up together.

 

In fact, there is an old Little League photo of us hanging up in the Hillsborough Newell Strength when we were 11-12 years old.

 

Casey has gone on to great things, but one of the things I admire most about him is his ability to find harmony in his life between being a husband, great dad, varsity football Coach and an individual.

 

Yup, he still makes time for his own personal health and fitness.

Mindset Monday: One Thing to Kill Overwhelm

I can remember the day, 9 and a half years ago.

 

I went into my Principal’s office for some advice.  I just needed someone to listen.

 

I had a laundry list of things to do, my thesis for my master’s, I was getting ready to open the first facility for Newell Strength and the list went on.

 

There were way too many things and BIG things, that I became frozen.  Totally not like me, but it happens to me from time to time just as it does to you.

 

The thing with overwhelm is that we are focusing on  multiple things at once.

 

We can only do 1 thing at a time though.  Multi-tasking is a myth I will blow up in another email this week.

 

So, how do we gain clarity on that one thing?  You put pen to paper.  Writing and journaling is one of the best things we can do for clarity, vision and emotional health.

 

When we put pen to paper, we bring logic and the human brain back to the table and we slow down.  We quiet the ‘noise’, the headtrash as my good friend Vince calls it.

 

Give it a try, take out a pen tonight and start to write.  Aim for a paragraph and see what happens.

Mindset Monday: Where Your Attention Goes

A few weeks back, I scheduled the next in line seminar of our heart health series that is proving to be quite popular.

 

The date was to be January 10th.  Dr. Andrey and I were off and running.

 

I shared the date with Mike, my good friend and our head trainer and he informed me he wouldn’t be able to make it.

 

What?!

 

Turns out, he is getting married on the 11th and the rehearsal dinner is on the 10th.  And I knew this, because I am in the wedding party!

 

But, as humans, we tend to give what’s front and center of our attention at the moment more significance and importance.

 

Nonetheless, the date is switched to the 17th, stay tuned on that.

 

Remember, where your attention goes, energy flows and results will follow.

Geoff, the BadA&& Lawyer

I can remember the first time Geoff ever came to Newell Strength back in 2012. He came to try it out with long time member, Frank.

Geoff was busy, having his own law firm, but he was going to be getting married and wanted to be in the best shape that he could possibly be.

He achieved that and as life happens, he stopped for a period of time with us at Newell Strength.

But then, after having kid #2, Jackson, he decided that he, being an older dad, needed to make his own fitness and health a priority.

So, he started back up and he is on fire. He makes it in at 5 or 6 am before his busy day with family and business starts. And as you’ll see in the video, little things like playing with the kids on the floor and then getting up, 20 times per night, have become easy.

That’s what it’s all about!

You Have the Life You Are Willing to Tolerate

I wrote this letter as my most recent entry in my book to Brax and Colt.  In case you missed it, enjoy!

 

Boys, we all have a tolerance, a threshold if you will.

Today, what I want to talk to you about is the life you are tolerating.

In life, most people live it passively, somehow thinking that this is a practice run.  Let me be clear: this is not a rehearsal.  What you have left in the tank when life is over will represent your potential unfulfilled.

Wherever you are at in life when you are reading this is the life you have built up until this point.  Life is a progression, you can’t ever have ultimate success because each decade, in my humble but accurate opinion, is a stepping stone to the next.

 

Your first 4 decades are going to be about building your foundation, it’s going to be about the hustle (while also always cultivating energy, learn from my earlier mistakes of ‘grinding’).  By your 4th decade, you will most likely have a family and if you do, its up to you to provide.

If you move into your fifth decade and don’t have the health you want, the wealth you want or the relationships you want, its because you tolerated your results so far.

Its a tricky thing, because human nature is to seek out comfort, to remain in homeostasis.  It is not a natural thing to constantly seek betterment and progression, because of the change and discomfort that comes along with that choice (key word here).

But as I always say, what’s the alternative?

I don’t believe we can live our ultimate life while remaining complacent and tolerant of results and outcomes that aren’t quite what we dreamed of.

Now here is the key, at least the key that has worked for me.  Examine your life and see where you want better results and start measuring.  We cannot improve that which we don’t measure.  Think about that for a second.

Life is a game and in games, you are supposed to have fun, leave it all out there, compete and keep score! How the hell would you know who won if you didn’t keep score.

And then you course correct to continually get better.  You only lose if you don’t know why you lost.

Put on your battle armor because you will need it as you continually battle against the eges of your comfort zone.
