Winning the Small Moments

Two weeks ago, Brax and I went on a guy’s errand night.

 

First, we went to pick up some firewood and wouldn’t you know it, the son of my buddy CJ was dressed in his Marine’s uniform because had just gotten back from training.

 

Brax loves army guys and he was ecstatic!  He talked about it all the way until we got to our next destination in New Brunswick, at a warehouse to pick up a new dryer.

 

The guy gave him a $20 tip after we loaded it into the truck!

 

He told me all about the multitude of army guys he was going to buy with his new found money on the way home.

 

It was a simple trip, but full of wins and memories.

 

Memories are often made in the little moments, the ones that you don’t expect much from.

I remember 10 years ago, going grocery shopping at the old Stop and Shop in Hillsborough, listening to the Success Principles by Jack Canfield.

 

I was teaching by day, working on Newell Strength every spare moment I got.

 

That book impacted me in a big way, mainly by making me think about how I was running my life in all areas.

What’s Your Problem Dude?

In life, tough times are a coming’.

 

That is one thing that is guaranteed.

 

Yet, we need to be mindful of the fact that we must keep the problem, the problem.  I often come across people that are making their current problem their story.

 

The ‘problem’ with that is that we can solve a problem, we cannot solve a story.

 

I always remind and ask Devon, ‘What is your current story that you are telling yourself?’

 

When we change the narrative in our head and stop with the drama, we can solve, and move forward.

 

It’s a different way to think, but one that will empower you for sure.

Do What You Said…..  

As I am writing this, inspiration struck me when I glanced down at my wrist.

 

Truth be told, I was going to write this email about something completely different.

 

But then I saw the acronym tattooed on my wrist: DWYSYWD.

 

I see it every day, so I take it for granted that it’s common knowledge.

 

That’s a mistake on my part.

 

It stands for: Do What You Said You Would Do.

 

If we just did that in life, we would be just fine.

 

Things would get finished and we would continue to climb the ladder of success.

 

Small hinges swing big doors.

Discovering New Ways

13 days ago, we gave our first ever Heart Health seminar.

 

It was a fantastic turnout, over 130 people showed up on a Friday night!

 

At the end, the audience had the chance to ask a few questions and some were directed at me and my philosophy towards nutrition and such.

 

I could tell that some of the questions were coming from a position of defiance, and that is A O K with me.  The thoughts and philosophies of Newell Strength have been a long time in the making and we didn’t grasp them until we were ready.

 

But asking questions is the first sign of self-awareness.  Even if you don’t agree with the answers, ask the questions.

 

And then, if you find yourself in disagreement, ask yourself: ‘Even though I disagree, what if it were possible that the other point of view was correct?’

 

Remember, your brain always gives you the answers you are asking of it.  It doesn’t like open loops or unfinished business.

The External Cannot Defeat Your Internal

My professor at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has often told me, ‘you only lost if you don’t know why you lost’.

 

External circumstances can win the battle, but they can only beat you in the overall war if you allow them.

 

If you refuse to learn from them and decide to pass off your power to circumstances, you will be defeated.

 

In today’s episode, I talk about how forging a winning mindset will ensure that you never let the external obstacles that will show up (trust me!), defeat you.

Are You a Decision Maker?

I had a Mind Map a month ago with a friend that wanted to improve himself.

 

We got to talking about leadership and he said he wasn’t a leader, he simply punched the clock.

 

Well, well, well….

 

Whether you realize it or not, YOU and you alone are the leader of your life and possibly your family.

 

Leaders make decisions, right or wrong.

 

If they are wrong, they admit it.

 

But they don’t hem and haw and waste valuable head space.

 

People will follow those that have the gall to make decisions.  An inability to make decisions is not attractive to anyone.

 

Start by practicing with the small things such as what you are going to eat or wear and build that muscle from there.

 

That’s leadership 101.

The Benefits of a Flexible ‘Diet’

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a Yankees game with a great friend of mine.

 

He got us box seats and it was quite a treat, all inclusive.

 

The spread was amazing and you better believe I went up 3, maybe four times!

 

And normally during my regular routine week, I don’t have dessert during the week.

 

But this was a special occasion and life is to be enjoyed.

 

Plus, with fasting, I have all the flexibility in the world.  Even if I ‘go off course’, I am not gonna get out of shape with just one meal.

 

With that in mind, I piled up some cookies and put some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right on top.

 

Fitness is to enhance your life, not become your life.  I’ve deprived myself and learned the hard way in the past….

 

Enjoy the special experiences of life and realize that flexibility is key to any long term success.
