Breaking Your Paradigms

Eleven days ago, an old friend and client, whom I helped get ready for a bodybuilding show in years past, wanted to come in and chat.

He seems to have lost his shape because of some time off and wanted to get going again with us.

Anyhow, he had some questions about the Panda Diet and couldn’t seem to get his head around it.  He loved the concept but he kept wanting to revert back to his ways of old.

He wanted to look through his ‘bodybuilding’ glasses at the information I was presenting to him.

If fact, he was the second person that night that said something along the lines of, ‘But I was told by this other gym to get a ton of protein and eat small meals throughout the day, yada yada yada.’

I stood steadfast in my answer that those old ways were wrong and that I too once bought into them.  The difference was that I continually emptied ‘my cup’.

And if you have any concept in life where you refuse to ‘hear the other side’, then you can be sure that it is in that very area that you really need to practice ‘emptying of your cup’.

Begin each day a new and with a blank slate.

Loving Life’s Lessons

Two weeks ago, I was doing some work up in the cafeteria up at our Church.

I had gotten there about an hour early for my life group and I figured I would use that time to work on the Panda Diet book.

Anyhow, a few of the members had already let me know that they weren’t going to make it on that particular night, but I decided to wait a little bit past 7 to see if anyone new would be coming.

Well, I was about all packed up when this sweet little lady, Patti, walks in.

She says, ‘Is this the fitness life group?’  To which I confirmed and told her we could hang and chat.

Well, wouldn’t you know it, she told me she had just started fasting, so naturally, it was just her and I for the next hour talking about life and fasting.

And it was timely for me because I was starting to have doubts about my mission with the book and if anyone was going to ‘get it’.  Just like that, a message from the Universe walks in as if to say, keep going, people need this book.

Life is always serving up lessons if we are willing to keep our eyes open.

The Panda Diet Update, Discipline and Persistence

The Panda Diet book is set to be completed by early March and I am excited to share my world-class knowledge on fasting with the world.

And I couldn’t have done it without practicing daily discipline and persistence.

In life, discipline leads to more freedom, not less of it, despite what the masses would have believed.

If you practice showing up daily and putting one foot in front of the other, then success will meet you along the way.  Persistence is a skill, which means it can be learned.

Friday Focus: Where is Your Attention Going?

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

 

In life, where our attention goes is everything.  Literally!  Think about it.

 

Where your attention goes, your energy flows and results follow.

 

If you want to improve your health, you need to constantly put your focus on your health.

 

And the best way to redirect your focus and attention is through the questions you are asking yourself.

 

I just did this with Devon the other day….

 

When a situation arises ask yourself: ‘What is my inner dialogue at the moment?’

 

To redirect your attention to you need to realize and catch the runaway train of thoughts that sometimes build such momentum that we don’t realize we actually do have control over them.

Your Thursday Booster: Know Thyself

Back in my freshman year of highschool, I went to the homecoming dance because I thought that’s what I should do.

 

The girl I went with was nice enough, but it was torture sitting in the high school cafeteria with my peers.

 

I could think of ten other places I would have rather have been and all involved solitude.

 

This carried on throughout high school and college.   I used to dread big parties and forget about going to them on back to back nights.

 

That was, until I learned more about myself.  You see, I am a BIG introvert and introverts recharge by being alone.

 

There are many times when I am quiet around Devon, not because I have nothing to say but because I am recharging my batteries.

 

We went away 2 weekends ago for a day just so we could both recharge.  Nothing fancy, just some quiet, alone time.

 

Some people recharge by being around people.  The point is, you have to know yourself and how to recharge.  Think about it, your cell phone would be no good if it had no batteries right?

Times of Trial and Tribulations from Newell Strength

Throughout my time building Newell Strength, there have been many trials and tribulations.

 

Times that I wanted to give up and throw in the towel.

 

In this episode, I discuss a few of those funny and memorable moments, including the time I left my new intern, Gabe Lincoln, in charge for 10  whole days so we could go on our honeymoon to Fiji!

Winners Do This..

Way back in 2007, while driving to and from my teaching gig, I would listen to audio cds.

 

In fact, as I write this, I am relistening to a lot of those CDs as I drive around town each week.

 

Well, one of the guys, Dan Kennedy, was fond of making a point about being able to ‘clear the calculator’ quickly.

 

We all have ‘bad things’ happen to us.  Call them setbacks or obstacles, it doesn’t matter what the label is.  Average people allow these things to take sooo much time to overcome.

 

Winners, on the other hand, have an almost uncanny and superhero-like ability to ‘clear the calculator’ and forge ahead.

 

This is in large part because winners are masters at reframing and they expect there to be obstacles along the way.

 

Both of these are just ways of thinking and that is a skill.  All skills can be learned, so….

My Bleeding Heart

I remember 30 years ago, as a young elementary school student, getting so excited on Valentine’s Day for the classroom celebration.

 

I loved giving out the cards to all my classmates and getting those tasty little candy hearts to munch on.

 

Anyhow, happy Valentine’s Day!

 

A few weeks ago, we had our 2nd ‘How to Have the Healthiest Heart Around’ seminar.  It was a great success once again.

 

Dr. Andrey and I were texting in the days that followed about how this was a worthy mission, one that we were both passionate about because it could literally save and transform lives.

 

When you find a mission, you make it work, you dig deep, you realize that you don’t have to do anything….you GET to carry it forth.

 

If you find a big enough reason for your mission, pursuing it in the face of fatigue and resistance is simple.  You don’t have to dig up willpower, it’s a part of you.

Baking Soda Brownies

11 days ago, we had some of our closest friends over the Super Bowl.

 

It’s become a great excuse to hang out over the years.

 

Anyhow, in preparation, Devon was baking and I was getting some other stuff ready around the house.

 

The boys were at my parents and as I was getting ready to go pick them up for the party, Devon asked me if I could get her out the powdered sugar.

 

I went and grabbed a bag out of the pantry and I thought it was the correct stuff.  It was a bag within a bag so I couldn’t read the label.

 

Devon told me that it wasn’t the right stuff so I went back in and grabbed a big ziplock bag with what I thought was powdered sugar.  It had no label since we had transferred it from the original bag to a ziplock.

 

I didn’t know nor did I care, I was just looking forward to the Blonde Brownies she was attempting to make since they are one of my favorite desserts of hers.

 

Well, fast forward a couple of hours and people started to dig into the brownies.  I was over near the fireplace with a beer when I saw the look of disgust on the faces of Devon and those that had taken a big tasty bite of the brownies.

 

Followed by them running to the sink and nearest bathroom to gag and spit it out.

 

Devon looked at me and said, ‘YOU!!!!’  Me?  Apparently the second bag I had brought out was baking soda, not powdered sugar. Ha!

 

So, rather than 4 cups of powdered sugar they got a nice big taste of 4 cups of baking soda.

I guess the moral is….measure twice, cut once.
