Member of the Month: James Ghanim

James first started at Newell Strength 13 months ago.  At the time, he wasn’t sure what he was going to get out of his trial, but after 30 days, he was hooked.

 

His transformation has been an inspiration.  James has lost 60 pounds, more than cut his body fat percentage in half and become incredibly strong! Just last week he was able to press the 100 pound dumb bells!

 

And he will be the first one to tell you that he was not a ‘gym guy’.

The Early Years of Newell Strength

The idea for Newell Strength was first planted in my head in 2006.

 

I never knew what it would become, only that it ‘could become’.

 

And when I need to get centered again, to rediscover my mission, I find that reminiscing about the early days and my ‘why’ often does the trick.

He Only Had 5 Years Left to Live

A few weeks ago, I was doing the weekly video with GL when I sensed that he was veering off course.  He’d be the first to tell you so.

 

When we got to why remembering why he started, he said it was to lose weight.

 

On the very surface, yes.

 

But weight loss in and of itself isn’t the driver.  What type of pain and suffering is the extra weight costing you?

 

I dug and dug and then he said if he had continued on his path when he started with our sweepstakes a few years ago, he may have had only 20 years left to live, to which I said, ‘Dude, more like 5! You were 400 pounds and climbing!’

 

Sometimes we all need a bigger dose of the truth. Sugar coating never helps anyone move forward.

 

Where in your life do you need more brutal honesty and ‘violent’ accountability?  We all need it….

I Have a Confession

One month ago, I sat in the baby room at our church with Emma when Brent, our pastor, was speaking about fasting as a part of his sermon.

 

He had mentioned Newell Strength a few times since the topic was about forming new habits, being that we had just entered the new year.

 

After the sermon, Devon and I went up to say hi as we always do and I said, ‘Brent, I’d be happy to do something fitness related for the community up here if you’d like.’

 

Bam!  Within minutes I had committed, he was putting the info in the very next sermon that was starting in 20 minutes.

 

They got a selfie picture of me and we were off to the running.

 

The lesson here is that I was stepping out of my comfort zone and I took action on an idea long before I even knew the details.

 

I didn’t know how I was going to do it, when I would fit it in, how I would speak to the people that joined my life group.  But it didn’t matter, the idea struck me and I spoke up.

 

In life, you cannot wait for all the lights to be green.  Just begin.

Member of the Month: Mike Double V

I remember sitting down with Mike roughly a year ago and listening to why he was a good fit for our Ripped Dads contest.

 

He had been struggling with energy, weight gain and type 2 diabetes for some time.

It’s been amazing to witness his transformation both physically and mentally the past year.  He has become a HUGE part of the tribe at Newell Strength and he continues to inspire others as they look for that torchbearer to follow.

You Don’t Have a Mindset Problem

6 years ago, I spent a weekend in a classroom learning from Dax Moy.  The topic was Mind Mapping, something that was calling me to learn and to teach.

 

Little did I know that it would be one of the great learning periods of my life.

 

One of the things that many people don’t know that Dax taught me was the concept of the ‘3 brains’.

 

We are all only taught about the human brain, otherwise known as the mind.  The problem is, you can’t access the mind fully and progressively if there is a deeper ‘brain-set’ problem in the animal brains.

Monday Mindset: Mamba Mentality

A little over two weeks ago, the great Kobe Bryant passed, along with his daughter and 7 others.

 

It is tragic to say the least.

 

It really shook me to the core, I spent a good part of that Sunday night crying.  My love for basketball and my admiration for this guy and my compassion for a fellow father, all boiled into thinking about how he was taken too soon from this earth.

 

But there are higher powers than my mortal mind.  We have to learn from tragedies such as this one.

 

One of the things that inspired me so much about Kobe was his mindset, known as the Mamba Mentality.  He gave us that gift, that torch.  It didn’t matter if you weren’t a basketball player, the Mamba Mentality was about never giving in, never giving up, no matter what.

 

That is part of his legacy.  He gave us that, it’s up to us whether we cement it home.

 

Listen, we all are gonna die.  What gift are you going to leave behind?  And no, you don’t have to be famous to leave a legacy.

Monday Morning Mindset: Keep Your Fire Stoked

20 some years ago, I was reading a book by a famous trainer.  And in that book, he talked about how fat loss was like stoking a fire.

 

Sometimes it took a while to get the fire going, but once you got it going, you just had to stoke it to keep it up.

 

In life, you need to recognize that the hardest part of setting a fire is starting it.  Once you’ve started it, you just have to keep it going.

 

Secondly, if a fire goes out, it’s not the fires fault.

 

It’s because you stopped focusing on it and tending to it.  Hmmm….

 

Sounds a lot like what happens to people’s dreams.

 

If you have a dream in life, work on it, get that fire burning.

 

But then don’t forget to tend to it, keep the flame going.

 

Remember, where your attention goes, energy flows and results will follow.

FREE Advice if You Want It

10 days ago, I sat in my buddy’s basement with some of my closest friends, watching the college football national championship.

 

It is a yearly tradition for us but the game always runs well past midnight.

We were discussing how late it was and what were doing the next morning when they asked me what time I was going to get up.

 

To which I replied, 5.

 

My buddy said, ‘But  you always talk about how important sleep is.  On a night like this, why not just sleep a little extra?’

 

And to be fair, he had a valid point.  But sometimes we need to know where we are at in life.  Right now, my focus is on staying strong on my ‘Mind Map Morning routine’.  I began right before Christmas but then got wiped out by the flu for 3 weeks.

 

We are not always going to have balance in life.  Overall, I’ve been doing pretty good with my sleep quantity so I knew a night or two of less sleep wouldn’t hurt in the long run.

 

Put your attention on the keystone habit in your life, the one that has the biggest ROI and don’t let your sights off of it.
