When You Teach, You Learn Twice

6 and half years ago, I resigned from teaching. Those of you that knew me then know how difficult a decision that was.

In fact, it was the most difficult decision that I have ever had to make.

And it was difficult for a multitude of factors, one of which was that I loved teaching, I absolutely loved it!

Once I reframed my situation and realized that I would still be teaching, just to a different audience, then it made the pain sting a little less.

I have no problem saying that I am a world class teacher; but the reason I am confident in saying that is because I am a world class student. I can’t get enough learning in.

One of my methods for learning was teaching what I recently learned, way before I had a full grasp of whatever the said concept or lesson was.

In today’s episode, I discuss the concept of teaching and learning twice. You can take a listen here:…-you-learn-twice/

Running Over the Lawn Mower

Two weekends ago I was finishing up yard work with the Munch Man while Devon was getting ready to take the boys over to a friend’s house so we could have a date night.

I had left the mower off to the side of the driveway, not processing that she was going to be leaving soon. Anyhow, she loaded up, I put Munchie in his car seat and off she went, smack-smash right into our mower!

The damage could have been worse, I only lost a wheel which I can easily replace.

At first I was angry, but then I realized it was pretty funny and it was only my own fault.

When you can look in the mirror and take ownership of your life, you realize that anger has no place because it’s like a ball and chain around your spirit.

If you are going to laugh about it later, mind as well laugh about it now.

Member Showcase: Taryn McLean

Taryn and I go way back to 2009.  Yup, we met, right around the time I met Devon.  And that only makes sense since Taryn is Devon’s older sister.

Putting biases aside, I couldn’t be more proud and happy for Taryn.  She realized that for her destiny as a mom, wife and individual to be achieved, she would have to step outside of her comfort zone.

Here is her experience from the past few years of training at Newell Strength in her own words:

“I started going to Newell Strength back in May 2015 after a series of failed attempts at breaking 2 hours in the half marathon distance.  At that time Kyle told me if I committed to just 1 gym night per week I would meet my goal at my next race (November).  I took him up on the offer, and started my weekly gym nights.  About 12 weeks out from my half marathon I started my normal training plan (about 4 runs/week including speedwork, easy runs, and long runs).  Once the race got closer I started to let doubt creep in, but a mind mapping session with Kyle allowed me to put those fears aside and just go for it.  I am happy to report I finally broke the 2 hour mark that November, coming in at [1:59:45].  I called Kyle from the finish line to thank him 🙂

Fast forward to September of 2016, and I once again set my sights on a PR.  I started doing the MET classes the May leading up to the race, and added a 2nd gym night to my week.  I was able to break my standing PR by 21 seconds, crossing the finish line in [1:59:24].  I still do the MET classes twice a week, and have a goal of breaking [1:59] this fall.  I firmly believe that I could never have achieved these goals without the Team at Newell Strength!”

Member Showcase: Mike Lombardi

Mike started with us a little over a year ago after the urging of his sister, Nina.

Mike was committed and consistent, but something changed when he became a father to his little girl, Nola.

Yup, now he was on a mission. He wasn’t satisfied and realized that he wanted to be around for as long as possible and in as great a shape as possible for Nola.

Since he made that decision, he is down 20 pounds, gained over 5 pounds of muscle and he is in the sweet spot with his nutrition strategy and plan.

Here is a short video of Mike if you’d like to hear it in his own words and see him in action.

Keep being a role model for Nola and all the other dads out there Mike!
