An Amazingly, Frightening Story

Almost two weeks ago, on Braxton’s birthday, we had just gotten back from a family hike when the boys requested that I go play Michael Myers tag with them down at the river.

 

Heck ya!  

 

I put on my one piece jumpsuit and Michael Myers mask and off we went.

After playing for about 20 minutes near the river, I told the boys to move in towards the middle of the field (it’s about the size of a football field).  

 

Braxton, with Colt in tow, went around a wood pile that a neighbor keeps down there for bonfires.

 

I couldn’t see the boys for a few seconds because the pile of twigs and firewood sits behind a big stack of wooden pallets.  

 

As soon as the boys came into view, I saw something on the side of Colt’s head and then he started screaming.  I took one more step and a hornets swarm came into view.

 

Brax must have disturbed a nest that was hiding in the wood pile.

 

I quick ran over and scooped Colty up (Brax had already booked it) and had to listen as he screamed as these damn hornets were biting him.  

 

They were biting me as well but my main concern was to get him to safety.  

 

The hornets were all over his sweatpants, which I ripped off of him, along with my Mike Myers mask.

 

The 3 of us ran back to the house up the street, hornets in pursuit.  Brax actually got bit right as we were getting back to the house.  

 

All in, Colty got bit about 10-12 times.  Luckily he is tough as nails and was calm within 20 minutes of the incident.  

 

It was something that the 3 of us will never forget.  Even though it literally hurt, it will be a great memory (it’s all about perspective).

You are the CEO of Your Life

I remember 10 years ago, going grocery shopping at the old Stop and Shop in Hillsborough, listening to the Success Principles by Jack Canfield.

 

I was teaching by day, working on Newell Strength every spare moment I got.

 

That book impacted me in a big way, mainly by making me think about how I was running my life in all areas.

 

Think about this, YOU are running YOU Inc.

 

If you had a board of directors, would they keep you or fire you for they way you are being as CEO of your life?

 

It certainly is something to ponder.

Newell’s Rules #6-10

The year before Braxton was born, I was reading a book down in the OBX in which Brene Brown said, ‘Comparison is the thief of happiness’.

That was just one of those lines that I new would stick with me for the rest of my life.  It was simple and teachable.

Are You Stepping Over $100 Bills?

I remember when I did an experiment on myself 10 years ago.

I decided to try and sleep 8 hours per night, which was much more than the 5.5 I had been accustomed to.

Without changing my nutrition or training, I managed to lose 10 pounds of fat in that month. Amazing!

We live in a time where we think more is better, harder is better, faster is better and that success is only a matter of will.

If you are a S.O.S.O.H like most (stressed out, survival oriented, human) and you decide that you ‘want to get into shape’, the answer is not ‘harder’. The answer is to slow down and build some ‘you’ time into your life.

The thing is never THE thing. Your weight gain or lack of weight loss is usually much more than just a simple calorie equation.

Going back to the S.O.S.O.H’s, they normally start to take extreme measures and diet harder and wake up earlier to workout, all the while, not taking time to sleep or just sit and breathe for 10 minutes each day.

They are literally stepping over $100 bills to pick up nickels.

Once Your Mindset Expands…

I was incredibly fortunate this year to be able to hire Matt Furey as my personal success Coach.  This is a man that is super modest, despite his extreme success.

In fact, people don’t know this, but Tony Robbins has paid him a few times to come and do a consult (I always wondered who the masters went to as their teachers).

Everytime we have a Coaching call, he expands my way of thinking.  So funny enough, he actually brought this up on our call last week.

He said, ‘Kyle, once the mind expands to new realities and possibilities it can never go back’.  And how right he is!

The problem is that most people don’t let their minds expand because they get stuck in a rut with their way of thinking.

Once you know what’s possible, why would you settle for anything less?  When I see someone use a weight in the gym that they’ve never used before, I will tell them, ‘Awesome job!  Now you can’t ever go back, you now know what your new capabilities are’.

Do You Know How to Spell Success?

I was always a pretty good speller growing up.

 

Never quite good enough to win the spelling bee, but good enough.

 

But as the years have gone by, I have realized that it doesn’t matter whether or not you can spell success correctly.

 

What does matter is if you have a definition of success that is yours and yours alone.

 

Don’t buy into the default definition for success or any other trait for that matter.

 

Definitions and clarity are way, way, way more important than being a perfect speller or perfect anytihng for that matter (did you catch it?).

 

You’d be surprised at how many people never get off the starting blocks because they value other people’s judgment too much.

 

Judgment is a HUGE fear to humans.  That’s exactly why you should minimize your judgment sensors.

 

People are going to judge you no matter what.

 

Haters hate.

 

Do the opposite of what the majority are doing and you’ll be right 99% of the time.  Most people don’t live a life worth emulating.

What is Success to You? And What are You Willing to Do?

 

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

 

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

 

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

 

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

 

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”

The Path Is Immediate

The Path Is Immediate

When I was 17 years old, I wanted to be the best strength coach in the world.

I didn’t even really know what that meant because I had no one to set the bar against.

All I knew was that I was consumed with this idea of being the best.  Looking back on it, it was being the best that I could become.

It was reaching my full potential.  Am I there yet?  Nope, not even close.

However, I far surpassed my ‘movies of the mind’ from way back when.

You never really know where you are going to wind up.  Most people never even sniff their best self because they are unwilling to see how far they can actually go in life.

The path, your path, is immediate.  You are on it right now.  You can see the next step or even maybe the next couple of steps.

But the path is going to wind and zig-zag and go up and down.  Most people try to see the end from their current position.

You cannot see the end from where you are right now.  All that projecting does is increase your level of anxiety and makes you feel like a loser.

If you are feeling the great anxiety gap, just know that it is caused by trying to focus on the end of the path (which doesn’t really exist, it just keeps going) rather than your current and next steps.

Success is yours for the taking.  So what if it means you gotta show up and do the work every day.  So what if it means that you didn’t see anything after one day of doing visualization exercises.

The time is going to go by anyway.  You and you alone are in charge of your destiny.  If you don’t think so, it’s because you’ve bought into the lie of ‘out there’.
