Success (13)

Newell’s Rules #6-10

The year before Braxton was born, I was reading a book down in the OBX in which Brene Brown said, ‘Comparison is the thief of happiness’.

That was just one of those lines that I new would stick with me for the rest of my life.  It was simple and teachable.

In today’s podcast of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, that is rule #8.  And the other 4 are superb as well if I must say so myself.

Are You Stepping Over $100 Bills?

I remember when I did an experiment on myself 10 years ago.

I decided to try and sleep 8 hours per night, which was much more than the 5.5 I had been accustomed to.

Without changing my nutrition or training, I managed to lose 10 pounds of fat in that month. Amazing!

We live in a time where we think more is better, harder is better, faster is better and that success is only a matter of will.

If you are a S.O.S.O.H like most (stressed out, survival oriented, human) and you decide that you ‘want to get into shape’, the answer is not ‘harder’. The answer is to slow down and build some ‘you’ time into your life.

The thing is never THE thing. Your weight gain or lack of weight loss is usually much more than just a simple calorie equation.

Going back to the S.O.S.O.H’s, they normally start to take extreme measures and diet harder and wake up earlier to workout, all the while, not taking time to sleep or just sit and breathe for 10 minutes each day.

They are literally stepping over $100 bills to pick up nickels.

Once Your Mindset Expands…

I was incredibly fortunate this year to be able to hire Matt Furey as my personal success Coach.  This is a man that is super modest, despite his extreme success.

In fact, people don’t know this, but Tony Robbins has paid him a few times to come and do a consult (I always wondered who the masters went to as their teachers).

Everytime we have a Coaching call, he expands my way of thinking.  So funny enough, he actually brought this up on our call last week.

He said, ‘Kyle, once the mind expands to new realities and possibilities it can never go back’.  And how right he is!

The problem is that most people don’t let their minds expand because they get stuck in a rut with their way of thinking.

Once you know what’s possible, why would you settle for anything less?  When I see someone use a weight in the gym that they’ve never used before, I will tell them, ‘Awesome job!  Now you can’t ever go back, you now know what your new capabilities are’.

In which area does your mind need to expand?

Do You Know How to Spell Success?

I was always a pretty good speller growing up.

Never quite good enough to win the spelling bee, but good enough.

But as the years have gone by, I have realized that it doesn’t matter whether or not you can spell success correctly.

What does matter is if you have a definition of success that is yours and yours alone.

Don’t buy into the default definition for success or any other trait for that matter.

Definitions and clarity are way, way, way more important than being a perfect speller or perfect anytihng for that matter (did you catch it?).

You’d be surprised at how many people never get off the starting blocks because they value other people’s judgment too much.

Judgment is a HUGE fear to humans.  That’s exactly why you should minimize your judgment sensors.

People are going to judge you no matter what.

Haters hate.

Do the opposite of what the majority are doing and you’ll be right 99% of the time.  Most people don’t live a life worth emulating.

In today’s episode of Unlocking Your Inner Strength, I talk a ton about success and what you have to do to make it work for you.

What is Success to You? And What are You Willing to Do?

What is Success to You? And What are You Willing to Do?

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”

When’s the last time you put in the extra time?

Here’s a link to an article I just finished up for ya, enjoy!

The Path Is Immediate

The Path Is Immediate

When I was 17 years old, I wanted to be the best strength coach in the world.

I didn’t even really know what that meant because I had no one to set the bar against.

All I knew was that I was consumed with this idea of being the best.  Looking back on it, it was being the best that I could become.

It was reaching my full potential.  Am I there yet?  Nope, not even close.

However, I far surpassed my ‘movies of the mind’ from way back when.

You never really know where you are going to wind up.  Most people never even sniff their best self because they are unwilling to see how far they can actually go in life.

The path, your path, is immediate.  You are on it right now.  You can see the next step or even maybe the next couple of steps.

But the path is going to wind and zig-zag and go up and down.  Most people try to see the end from their current position.

You cannot see the end from where you are right now.  All that projecting does is increase your level of anxiety and makes you feel like a loser.

If you are feeling the great anxiety gap, just know that it is caused by trying to focus on the end of the path (which doesn’t really exist, it just keeps going) rather than your current and next steps.

Success is yours for the taking.  So what if it means you gotta show up and do the work every day.  So what if it means that you didn’t see anything after one day of doing visualization exercises.

The time is going to go by anyway.  You and you alone are in charge of your destiny.  If you don’t think so, it’s because you’ve bought into the lie of ‘out there’.

I will be teaching some really cool stuff that will help you activate regions of the brain that you didn’t even knew existed and fusing that with some serious mental work to make 2017 your best year ever.  This one is going to be a bit different, so there’s only room for 6 people.  You can find more info and sign up here, if you dare to be great in 2017:

Rhino’s Don’t Feel Gnats

Rhino’s Don’t Feel Gnats

Have you ever been stopped dead in your tracks by judgment?

I am sure the answer is yes.  The brain is very sensitive to judgment for survival reasons.

Here’s how it works:  your brain perceives slights and judgments.  The animal brain perceives it as you might get ‘kicked out’ of the tribe and your chance for survival goes way down.

(By the way, this is THE reason people in general are so petrified of public speaking).

Whenever you are trying to actually create something in your life, the swamp creatures will come out to attack.  It’s human nature.

And if you worried about everyone that said something mean or nasty about you, you would never ever be able to succeed.

Do you know why Rhino’s don’t feel gnats?  It’s because they have thick skin…

What other people think of you is none of your business.

If you expect that any time you are passing someone on the ladder of life they WILL bark at you, then you can formulate your response ahead of time.

Don’t give them any energy of yours.  Simply move on and realize that if you are trying to please everyone, you will wind up pleasing nobody.

Your self-image is everything.  Believe in what you are doing.

December’s workshop is going to be like nothing you’ve ever experienced.  I was going to do it on the 14th, but I need a little extra time to prepare for this one.  This one will be limited to 7 people max.  Keep an eye later this week for the bullet points of what we will be doing at this ‘Davinci’ workshop.

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Why Are You Underestimating Yourself?

Most people greatly overestimate what they can do in a few months but greatly underestimate what they can do in 5 years.

Most people’s ideas never make it out of their head into reality.

Most ideas go to the graveyard.

But it’s easy to be enthusiastic about a new idea.  Novelty is the greatest aphrodisiac.

I’ve come across a lot of people that ask me for advice or coaching on start-ups of some sort or another and you’d be shocked at how few people stick with their idea past the two or three month mark.

They fail to realize that all overnight successes take 12 years (at least!).

You aren’t most people though.  I want you to be different.

The first year we held our Thanksgiving morning workout, we had 4 people show up.

The second year (I wasn’t there because I had just ruptured my patellar tendon for a second time) there were 14 people.

The third year we had 60 people.

And just this past week, we had 100 people at the TG charity workout!

If more people would develop ‘sticktoitiveness’, they would realize all their dreams.

I want you to think long and hard about a 5 year projection for yourself and commit to it this coming year.  Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

You might surprise yourself, but you won’t surprise me because I already believe in you.

We still have a few openings in our next edition of Ripped Dads which begins next week.  If you are looking to get back on track or maybe your husband is looking to get back on track, then you should check out the application here:

Yoda, Einstein and Seinfeld

Yoda, Einstein and Seinfeld

What do these 3 characters have in common?

They all had a life philosophy to live by.

Yes, I know this is the second time this week we are talking about philosophy.

And in case you are behind, on Wednesday I wrote about my training philosophies.

Well, today my good friend, I am going to let you in on some of my life’s philosophies.

You know, as each year goes by, I get more and more confident.  Not arrogant, but SELF-confident.  After some reflection, I realize that is because my life philosophies are really becoming more ingrained and taking ‘root’.

I cannot state the importance of having a list of principals you live by.

I will not list them all here, but I will be covering this in much more detail in an upcoming podcast (you do realize I now have a podcast, right?:)).

Without further ado:

  • My mind must be nurtured each day through learning new things and connection with a higher power.  A weak mind equals a weak life.
  • I get final say of who I let into my life.  If someone drains me, they get banned from my life.  And no, this doesn’t have to be a confrontation.  I just cut off my life’s energy from them leeching off it anymore. I know who’s opinions to value and whose don’t.
  • Time is the most precious thing that I have, I must protect is like my life depends on it, because it does.
  • I cannot reason with emotion.  It’s a losing proposition.  Don’t offer up ‘coaching’ in any relationship in your life if the person doesn’t ask you for it.
  • Nearly any skill can be learned through repetition.  And repetition is what separates the successful from the tire-kickers.  Enthusiasm is easy, endurance is the hard part.

Wo-MAN, that is therapeutic just writing it out once again.  Give it a try.  I could go on forever, but my workout with the Wolverine is calling my name.

Be different.  Get clear on your philosophy.

Listen to Learn and Learn to Listen

Listen to Learn and Learn to Listen

In the summer before my senior of high school, I was fortunate enough to travel out to Michigan to attend Tom Izzo’s summer basketball camp at Michigan State University.

I was born in Michigan and am a HUGE Michigan State fan, so getting to meet Izzo, his staff and the current players was icing on the cake.

It was at that particular camp that I got to meet my favorite player of all-time, Mateen Cleaves.

You may not be aware of the fact that we named Mateena, our silver lab, after Mateen.

But anywho, the reason it was the best camp I ever attended was because of the teaching style of Izzo.

Everything had a purpose.  There wasn’t one second wasted.

One of the big pearls of wisdom that I walked away with was his saying, ‘Listen to learn and learn to listen.’

So clear, and so simple

Listening is a skill, one that I would call the mother skill of becoming a success.

Too many people don’t know how to listen or they don’t care about listening.  In their minds, they know all the answers already.

I often re-listen to audiobooks, time and time again because each time, I learn something new.

You don’t learn everything the first time through.

Each time I coach someone, I learn something new.  Read that again, I learn something new, not just the client.

In life, I don’t believe that you can stay stagnant.  You are either marching up the hill or you are rolling back down it.

DO NOT fall for the illusion of maintenance and complacency.  They both will lead to mediocrity and as my idol Arnold once said, ‘Average is the worst thing in the world.’

I agree.

Here’s your chance not to be average: come out on Thanksgiving morning for the best Thanksgiving morning workout you’ve ever had.  You will be above average by donating to a great cause (Little Charlie Kroog) and you will be superior to all the couch potatoes that are like sloths on this great holiday.

Boost your brain chemicals first thing in the morning and I can guarantee that this Thanksgiving will be your favorite and most memorable one yet!
