Here’s How He Did It

One month ago, roughly, right before I was about to take Braxton to martial arts, I decided I would take off his training wheels on his big boy bike.

It is something that I had wanted to do for a while and I thought we could at least start the process for 30 minutes or so.

So, he and I go down to the garage and take off the trainers and head back up to the cul de sac.

I helped him get on and start running with him while holding the back of the seat for about 5 seconds and then I let go and boom, he nailed it on his first try, he just took off!

I was looking at Devon we both shrugged in amazement.

My expectations were clearly different than Braxtons.

What’s the point?  Well, as adults, we often expect things to be too hard or that they have to take a certain amount of time.  They don’t.

And, sometimes, as humans, we are just a natural at certain things.  In other things, not so much.

Time for self evaluation….

Member Showcase: The Legend of Lombo

Mike began training with us a few years ago after his sister Nina roped him in.

My brothers and I have known Mike for a damn long time so it was good to have him come on board.

Mike has made a complete physical transformation, but more importantly is the mental resilience and emotional muscle that he has built.

He went through a very tough time last year with the passing of his father and just 6 weeks ago, his twin boys, Ashton and Taven, were born 2 months prematurely.

Yet, he still finds time to work on himself because he knows that in order to be the man he needs to be for his wife, Larinda and the kids, he needs to be in his best shape possible.

Why Do You Fear This?

Two Sundays ago, we had just picked the boys up from my parents as they gave us some time to hang and have a little date.

We love the boys the whole world full, but we make a point to carve out time to continue to working on our own loving relationship and marriage as well. (Remember, you must always put your own mask on first!)

Well, it was about 8 o’clock and when we got in my truck, the outside thermometer read 81 degrees.  Now, keep in mind that we only live 12 or so minutes from my parents, about a 5 mile drive.

Within 5 minutes on the way home, it began to rain torrentially and the temperature kept dropping.  By the time we pulled in, the thermometer read 63 degrees!  Crazy, an 18 degree drop in a matter of 10 minutes!

Devon thinks it weird that I get a kick out of such things, but realize how quickly things can change in life.  In this case, it was the temperature, but in your life, it may be a career, a relationship, your health and so on.

Change is the only constant, yet it’s the thing we fear most.  How about we learn to embrace it since it’s coming along or shall I say, taking us along for the ride anyhow.

You Only Lost If…

I started journaling and writing down my philosophies way back in high school.  I am not sure why I did it, no one told me to do it, it just felt like the right thing to do.

I Know How You Feel…

I know how you feel.

 

Being a busy parent is tough.

 

Your time is limited.

 

It’s rare that you get to relax and kick your feet up.

 

Sometimes you think about all the freedom you used to have.  (It’s okay, don’t feel guilty about it).

 

Sometimes your energy is on ‘E’, but you can’t stop, you need to be the parent and partner that you committed to being.

 

And that’s why it’s more important than ever to manage your energy, to create more energy so you can be the best you to those that need you.

 

Get your weekly workouts in, manage your sleep (you need at least 7 hours per night), do a short, daily meditation or walk, drink you water, nourish your body with good food.

 

Yes, it’s tough, but you got this.  I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

 

Put your energy first and foremost and it’ll be A O K:)

The Anti-Resolution Plan

 

While at a party the other day, someone said to me, ‘I am done with making resolutions!  They never work and they only ever make me feel like a loser.’

 

She was right, they don’t work.

 

Resolutions are usually made on a whim and they are usually based on an extreme amount of willpower that mere mortals don’t normally possess.

 

Think about what resolution means.  It means to resolve a problem.

 

A problem has a solution.

 

A solution is a plan.

 

The reason resolutions don’t work is because there is no plan of action.  Saying you want to do something is meaningless.

 

Action is where it’s at.

 

And if your undertaking is something you are dreading, you are doomed to fail.  You don’t transform your life by doing something you despise.

 

The anti-resolution program is to do it differently than everyone else.

 

You focus on habits and systems and you don’t do anything that involves boatloads of will power.

 

The anti-resolution plan means creating a map ahead of time.

 

Planning is one of the most important things you can do, a quadrant 2 activity.

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

 

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

 

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

 

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

 

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”
