Do What You Said You Would Do

My workouts last week were mediocre at best. 

As I was saying yesterday, I was drained from the entire week and all the unknowns. 

But the mission was accomplished. I’ll be able to tell my grandchildren about it one day, hopefully….

All because I followed one principle, the one that it tattooed on my wrist: Do What You Said You Would Do. And that’s what I did.

There were multiple times I almost pulled out, backed off and shrank back. 

But I didn’t, because everytime I look at my wrist I realize that the DWYSYWD isn’t just ink, it’s a creed.

What Are You Doing With Your Down Time?

Each day this week I will be bringing one of the five areas of growth to get and learn from this situation.  Today’s topic is ‘down time’….

How many times have you wished that you just had more time in the day? 

How many times did you wish that you had more time to rest and rejuvenate?  To just chill and relax with the little moments of life?

Well, now you got it. 

So, what are you going to do with it?

It’s easy to let your work expand to fill the time you allow for it (Parkinson’s Law).  And if you aren’t used to being on your own schedule or working from home, it can be tricky. 

It took me quite some time when I resigned from teaching to figure it out. 

The initial disruption of this situation has come and gone.  Now you have to be diligent and disciplined with your time and energy.  When work is done, shut it down for the day. 

I know you have more time now because you have pretty much zero travel time. There’s no more commute, there’s no carting the kids around. 

 

Think about it, that is found time.  Time is the most valuable thing we have because you can never get it back. 

 

Use some of this new-found time to recharge your batteries.  Yes, enjoy a show here and there but don’t use it as an excuse to turn into Homer Simpson, as I said up top.  I’ve been seeing this happen to too many people. 

 

Get some more reading in, take a break from your phone.  Play some family games, get out in the sunshine midday. Treat yourself to a nighty show, there’s nothing wrong with that. 

 

But keep in mind that as humans we need rest, we need social interaction, we need sunlight and we need movement.  Schedule out your days and commit to these things each day. 

Treat them with importance. 

This too shall pass.  When it’s done, you are either going to say, ‘WTF!’, because you are more drained than when it all started in mid-March or you are going to feel fresh and ready to go.  In ways that you haven’t felt in years in some cases. 

If you never recharged your phone, it would die. 

Your batter is no different. 

Enjoy this time and create some memories with it.

1- The Fat Shredder is coming!  Realistically it’ll probably start at some point in the backside of May and run until the 4th of July weekend.  Here’s all you have to do for now: start thinking of your teammates. Each team will have at least a member, non-member and one woman (teams of 3).  It’s gonna be epic and just what we all need at that time:) 

 




At Last, 2 Things That You Do Have Control Over

For the past 2-3 weeks, you’ve been hearing a lot about the things that you don’t have control over.  

You haven’t been provided with much clarity on when this will come to an end.

And that lack of clarity will lead to a stress response, in this case, freeze mode. 

Well, I have good news.  

I want to direct your attention to the two things that you  always have control over; your effort and your attitude.

Yup, no matter what is going on in the outside world, you can control  your inner world through effort and attitude.

Throw the past few weeks out as learning experiences and decide right now how  you are going to work on your effort and attitude moving forward.

It was Blazingly Obvious to Devon

Roughly 2 weeks ago, I had just arrived at the Hillsborough gym, coming over from Flemington.

 

On the ride over, I was drinking my ‘juice’, aka salt water, thinking that the salt had a peculiar taste on this particular night.

 

Anyhow, I took a call from Action Jackson, when I realized something chunky had just entered my lips from my bottle.

 

Instantly I knew it was a stink bug!  I decided to stop drinking the water until I had time to fish the little bugger out.

 

Well, I got to the gym and Devon was heading out to work with a volleyball team, but not before coming over to kiss me hello.

 

She gave me one look and said, ‘You might want to chew some gum before heading into that meeting.’

 

I had stink-bug breath!  Damnit, I was walking around all night like that!

 

But here’s the thing, things like that on yourself are hard to notice.  They become obvious when you have someone point them out to you.

 

Kind of like having a great Coach in your corner, which is why you would want to come try us out at Newell Strength.

I am always Shocked and Amused…

Last week, I went into the restroom at one of my favorite coffee shops and I noticed that the dude before me pissed on the seat and decided not to clean up after himself.

 

What?!

 

How serious can you take a man that doesn’t have the self-decency to clean up his dribbly piss?

 

Listen, whether you want the responsibility or not, you are the CEO of your life.  And I can tell you from how you do the little things, whether you are getting what you want out of life or not.

 

If you are disciplined, be disciplined in all things.  Discipline leads to greatness.  Discipline leads to freedom and living life on your terms.

A few years ago I came to the conclusion that life is the ultimate game.

 

However, it is a game that cannot be won because if you were to win, it’d be over or you would stop growing.

 

But in a game, you must keep score and you must have fun, otherwise, why play?

Ask yourself if you were better today than you were yesterday…

 

Ask yourself what your 3 wins from yesterday were….

 

And then become aware that if you aren’t being the person you want to be today, to your partner, spouse, kids, friends, colleagues, then you can be damn sure it’s because your mind is elsewhere.

A few weeks ago, I was down in sunny Orlando at our mastermind meeting.

 

It was timely because I was feeling like things haven’t been going how I’d want them to go with Newell Strength, but that’s the growing pains of owning a business.

 

Yes, I go through ruts just like you.

 

Anyhow, Vince, my good friend and mentor, was giving a presentation about one of our favorite books, The War of Art, and he referenced a line from it: ‘He, the pro, reminds himself that it is better to be in the arena, getting stomped by the bull, than to be in the stands or in the parking lot’…

 

How very true.

 

There’s nothing I’d rather be doing when I sit back to think about it than face challenges and grow with something that I am so passionate about.
