Member Showcase: Casey Ransone

Casey and I grew up together.

 

In fact, there is an old Little League photo of us hanging up in the Hillsborough Newell Strength when we were 11-12 years old.

 

Casey has gone on to great things, but one of the things I admire most about him is his ability to find harmony in his life between being a husband, great dad, varsity football Coach and an individual.

 

Yup, he still makes time for his own personal health and fitness.

What Do You Mean ‘Don’t Ice’ Your Injury?

6 years ago, I came across some compelling research on the healing process for the human body.

 

And it went against the grain, just like so many things that we teach at Newell Strength.

 

What’s that you ask?

 

It was the idea of not icing an injury.  I could go on to why that is, but that’s not the point of this piece.

 

The point is that we are all affected by cognitive dissonance to some degree; this idea that we are so entrenched in a belief that we cannot fathom the other side and refuse to see the other side.

 

Well, if there’s one thing I am good at, it is ‘emptying my cup’ and examining all sides of an issue, implementing and experimenting and then making my own conclusions.  With my second knee injury, I didn’t ice one time, in fact, I did the opposite: heat, compression, movement and so forth.

 

I had a record recovery and my doc was shocked.

 

Last week, a good buddy texted me an article from a big publication about ‘How we should no longer ice an injury’. He said, ‘Look at that, you were right.’

 

In life, don’t be married to too many things, keep an open mind and be like water, test stuff out, teach it to learn it and continue to grow.

You Cannot MultiTask

Over the past 12 years, one of the things that I have been fortunate enough to learn out of necessity, combined with how the brain works, is ‘time management’.

 

Well, you see, time management is really a misnomer, how we use our time comes down to our energy.  And our energy comes down to our attention.

 

Too  many people think they can multitask, not realizing the tremendous amount of energy they waste switching back and forth between objects.

 

Think of it this way, if you were to run 100 yards straight away or run 100 yards, but broken up between 5 yards and back, ten times, kind of like a shuttle run; which one would be harder?

 

Metabolically it’s a no-brainer, the shuttle runs will tax you  much more, even though the total distance in the same. Your brain works the same way metabolically.  Starting is the hardest part of focus or exercise.  When you constantly start and stop, you are burning precious brain fuel.

 

Stop multitasking and focus on the 1 thing that you must do first.  Simple but effective.

Member Showcase: From Nervous to SuperWoman

I remember the very first time that Linda walked in to Newell Strength.

 

She happened to come by during a very busy athlete training session, which meant there were primarily big, strong dudes everywhere.  Add to the fact that Newell Strength is in a warehouse and she simply couldn’t get her head around this place being a fit for her.

 

She had to think about it.  However, Coach Dana reached out and was able to calm her fears and get her to commit to just 30-days.

 

Welp, that was 3 years ago.  Linda is one of the great success stories of Newell Strength.  She feels better, has lost a ton of weight and has become an important part of the Newell Strength community.

Halloween, The Spookiest Night of the Year

In case you weren’t aware, I absolutely love the Halloween season.

 

It brings back so many memories for me and each year we create new family traditions.  A couple of weeks ago, Braxton was running around the house dressed as Michael Myers and Colt was pretending to be Dr. Loomis (played by Donald Pleasance) from the original Halloween.

 

Devon and I were loving it and yes, its weird, but we are all weird, some of use just embrace it and are more open to it than others.

 

Anyhow, there is plenty of spookiness this time of year, but nothing could be scarier than letting another month go by wishing you had found the perfect fitness program.

Member of the Month: Shadi aka ‘Shotgun Steve’

Shadi came to us at Newell Strength last spring for our Ripped Dads spring contest.

 

Shadi is good buddies with my brother Suga Shane and he had been looking for something that would actually work, and a place where he could feel comfortable and a part of a larger community.

 

Well, that he did.

 

His results are off the charts in such a relatively short period of time and he has found his ‘tribe’.

Here’s How He Did It

One month ago, roughly, right before I was about to take Braxton to martial arts, I decided I would take off his training wheels on his big boy bike.

It is something that I had wanted to do for a while and I thought we could at least start the process for 30 minutes or so.

So, he and I go down to the garage and take off the trainers and head back up to the cul de sac.

I helped him get on and start running with him while holding the back of the seat for about 5 seconds and then I let go and boom, he nailed it on his first try, he just took off!

I was looking at Devon we both shrugged in amazement.

My expectations were clearly different than Braxtons.

What’s the point?  Well, as adults, we often expect things to be too hard or that they have to take a certain amount of time.  They don’t.

And, sometimes, as humans, we are just a natural at certain things.  In other things, not so much.

Time for self evaluation….
