Discover How to Read Your Own Feedback

A few weeks ago, after a really hard lower body training session, I awoke in the middle of the night with a nasty cramp right up in my groin.

It’s one of the muscles that ties into the hamstrings and helps you to extend the hip.

But that is really besides the point.

It was cramping because I had pushed it and strained it.

Well, here we are, a few weeks later and it’s hampering me.

You know why?

Because, I am still continuing to train it.

Stupid on my part.  I am ignoring my own biofeedback.  What’s that you say? It’s the feedback that your body is always telling you.  This is something that we use a lot within the Panda challenge and we teach within that program because once a person knows what signs to look for, they can make adjustments.

My groin is a very simple example, but it’s no different than someone feeling a lack of energy and a dip in mindset from the way they are eating or dieting.  Most people would just use the scale to dictate protocol even if biofeedback is pointing in another direction.

And yes, I am going to start altering lower body training so this thing can heal up:).

Mental Midgets and Mental Toughness

As I was doing this morning’s walk with the Little Warrior, I had a thought….

Yes, I am always thinking, but today, it was about mental toughness Monday’s theme.

There are a lot of ways to develop mental toughness, but one of the least talked about is this: Develop your own set of beliefs and speak your mind even when it doesn’t align with the herd mentality.

It’s not easy to develop a belief that goes against the grain.

You will be ridiculed and told to get back in line.

But when I look back at my fitness career in particular, almost everything we do at Newell Strength from training to nutrition was at first so outside the norm that the fake fitness experts would critique and judge.

I didn’t care though, because it was a set of beliefs that we arrived at from real world experience.

You don’t have to agree with everything you are told you have to agree with.  Will that make you an outlier?  Yup, but who cares.

I’d rather be an outlier than a sheep.

Something to think about as you start your week.

When to Speed Up and When to Slow Down

As humans, we crave patterns, which is even more important right now.  When routine is lost, it is easy to get into bad habits.  

With week 2 of the Corona upon us, we need to address this coming week with discipline.

1- The Fat Shredder is coming!  Realistically it’ll probably start at some point in the backside of May and run until the 4th of July weekend.  Here’s all you have to do for now: start thinking of your teammates. Each team will have at least a member, non-member and one woman (teams of 3).  It’s gonna be epic and just what we all need at that time:) 




How to Use Reframing In Uncertain Times

I remember Dr. Gecha, my surgeon and good friend that performed both patellar tendon rupture surgeries on me; asking me how I could have such a positive frame of mind the second time it happened.

He actually invited me to speak to a group of surgeons about mindset because he felt that was the missing  piece for all their patients that were undergoing surgeries.

Well, it’s somethingI have honed over the years, this ability to reframe.  It is a skill and all skills can be learned.

It was Blazingly Obvious to Devon

Roughly 2 weeks ago, I had just arrived at the Hillsborough gym, coming over from Flemington.

 

On the ride over, I was drinking my ‘juice’, aka salt water, thinking that the salt had a peculiar taste on this particular night.

 

Anyhow, I took a call from Action Jackson, when I realized something chunky had just entered my lips from my bottle.

 

Instantly I knew it was a stink bug!  I decided to stop drinking the water until I had time to fish the little bugger out.

 

Well, I got to the gym and Devon was heading out to work with a volleyball team, but not before coming over to kiss me hello.

 

She gave me one look and said, ‘You might want to chew some gum before heading into that meeting.’

 

I had stink-bug breath!  Damnit, I was walking around all night like that!

 

But here’s the thing, things like that on yourself are hard to notice.  They become obvious when you have someone point them out to you.

 

Kind of like having a great Coach in your corner, which is why you would want to come try us out at Newell Strength.

I am always Shocked and Amused…

Last week, I went into the restroom at one of my favorite coffee shops and I noticed that the dude before me pissed on the seat and decided not to clean up after himself.

 

What?!

 

How serious can you take a man that doesn’t have the self-decency to clean up his dribbly piss?

 

Listen, whether you want the responsibility or not, you are the CEO of your life.  And I can tell you from how you do the little things, whether you are getting what you want out of life or not.

 

If you are disciplined, be disciplined in all things.  Discipline leads to greatness.  Discipline leads to freedom and living life on your terms.

 

And wipe the damn seat next time!

A few years ago I came to the conclusion that life is the ultimate game.

 

However, it is a game that cannot be won because if you were to win, it’d be over or you would stop growing.

 

But in a game, you must keep score and you must have fun, otherwise, why play?

 

Now, here’s how you win on the daily.

 

Ask yourself if you were better today than you were yesterday…

 

Ask yourself what your 3 wins from yesterday were….

 

And then become aware that if you aren’t being the person you want to be today, to your partner, spouse, kids, friends, colleagues, then you can be damn sure it’s because your mind is elsewhere.

 

Fix your focus and you win.

Would You Rather Be in the Fight or Out of the Fight?

A few weeks ago, I was down in sunny Orlando at our mastermind meeting.

 

It was timely because I was feeling like things haven’t been going how I’d want them to go with Newell Strength, but that’s the growing pains of owning a business.

 

Yes, I go through ruts just like you.

 

Anyhow, Vince, my good friend and mentor, was giving a presentation about one of our favorite books, The War of Art, and he referenced a line from it: ‘He, the pro, reminds himself that it is better to be in the arena, getting stomped by the bull, than to be in the stands or in the parking lot’…

 

How very true.

 

There’s nothing I’d rather be doing when I sit back to think about it than face challenges and grow with something that I am so passionate about.
