Member of the Month: Liz Kish

Liz began training with us at Newell Strength over a year ago.

She came from another facility that she had simply outgrown and it has indeed been remarkable to see how she has grown in mind, body and spirit in that time period.

Liz even has her husband, Dennis, training with us now too and they are both a key piece to the community and family of Newell Strength.

Way Back Wednesday: Big Ben

As we continue down this memory lane for the next few weeks, I came across this video of Big Ben, who was one of the top HS tennis players in the state at the time.

You can see the white racks still in boxes in the background and you can see Drew, one of the first ever clients of Newell Strength way back in the days of the PIT and who would go on to be the second Coach after Gabe Lincoln at Newell Strength.

Drew now has his own training business down in New Orleans.

Man, time flies.

Great memories though.

They Say the Grass is Greener

We are all born with a unique way of looking at the world.

Through diligence and training, we can often improve and change, but change when it comes to human beings is rare.

Its rare because the desire for change has to come from within.  And that has to come from more advanced levels of self-awareness.

Anywho, I was born with a lense that allows me to quickly look at the positive in any situation.

When people say the grass is always greener, they don’t realize that its only greener because that is where they are watering the grass.

And the ‘watering of the grass’ is an analogy for where they are putting their attention.

Remember this: where your attention goes, energy flows and results will follow.

It’s green right underneath your feet, right now:)

Fatigue Makes Cowards of Us All

A few weeks ago, I made a video for the Newell Strength Tribe about fatigue.

We all have times where we are going to feel fatigued, it happens, that’s life. Just as we cannot and will not always have a feeling of happiness, we are not always going to have great energy.

And the reason I made the video was because I was feeling zapped for a few days.

It was easy to have thoughts of self-pity or wanting to take it easy but I knew it was just fatigue coming at me as resistance.

When you realize that fatigue will make a coward of you, no matter how tough you are, then you can weather the storm and make it through the day, knowing that tomorrow you can turn it around.

The key is to not let the fatigue win.

And if you are fatigued often, then we need to look at your lifestyle and habits.

One of the main things about training is that you train your mind to overcome tough situations.

Be the Victor, not the victim.

Member Experience of the Week: Peter Mora

Peter began with us a number of years ago in one of our exclusive Ripped Dads contests.

At the time, Peter was a new father and a busy professional.

Here is Peter in his own words:

I was an active athlete through HS and other than that, my health strategy has been through general DIY research, workout DVD’s etc.  I would say the closest I could compare this training experience to is that of my HS sports training, where you have a coach invested in your success, counseling you on form, explaining the reason why, being supportive of your goals, holding you accountable to show up and throwing out the gauntlet to improve.  I am very happy with my choice in working out at Newell Strength and it has been a positive and great experience for me.

My strength is improving, I have learned more about my physical shape in the past month than I had understood in the past 20 years, my physical shape is improving whereas I can feel and see muscle where its not been in years, my attitude is healthier, my mind is clearer, I sleep better, I’m more at peace knowing that I am on a tangible physical health improvement journey with Kyle and his team.

I would say, this isn’t a typical gym, if you want to improve your physical health, you are open to being coached on form and strategy, you have a positive attitude, you don’t mind hard work and sweat, you need to check out Newell Strength to see if it’s a fit.  In four weeks, I was able to drop 5% body fat and add 10 lbs. of muscle to my body, which I feel is an impressive accomplishment.  I am very grateful to have the opportunity of being guided by the Newell Strength team on my physical health journey and would recommend the gym without hesitation.

Member Showcase: Bob the Bullet

I first got to know Bob back in 1991.

Bob, aka Bullet, Coached me and his son Casey (my good friend) and my brothers along with my dad, in various sports.

Bob began coming to Newell Strength a few years back to prep for a knee replacement, which he made look like a breeze!

And the Bullet is 70 years young!  That should be an inspiration to anyone who thinks they are beyond picking up strength training.

Member Showcase: Ryan Ross

Ryan first reached out to Newell Strength in early October of 2018.

He was actually the first dad to reach out for our first ever Ripped Dads contest in Flemington.

He was the father of 2 year old Owen and was expecting another son in December.

Well, Ryan now has two sons, a full-time career and managed not to miss a beat with his training at Newell Strength.

Member Showcase: From Nervous to SuperWoman

I remember the very first time that Linda walked in to Newell Strength.

She happened to come by during a very busy athlete training session, which meant there were primarily big, strong dudes everywhere.  Add to the fact that Newell Strength is in a warehouse and she simply couldn’t get her head around this place being a fit for her.

She had to think about it.  However, Coach Dana reached out and was able to calm her fears and get her to commit to just 30-days.

Welp, that was 2 years ago.  Linda is one of the great success stories of Newell Strength.  She feels better, has lost a ton of weight and has become an important part of the Newell Strength community.

Member Showcase: Taryn McLean

Taryn and I go way back to 2009.  Yup, we met, right around the time I met Devon.  And that only makes sense since Taryn is Devon’s older sister.

Putting biases aside, I couldn’t be more proud and happy for Taryn.  She realized that for her destiny as a mom, wife and individual to be achieved, she would have to step outside of her comfort zone.

Here is her experience from the past few years of training at Newell Strength in her own words:

“I started going to Newell Strength back in May 2015 after a series of failed attempts at breaking 2 hours in the half marathon distance.  At that time Kyle told me if I committed to just 1 gym night per week I would meet my goal at my next race (November).  I took him up on the offer, and started my weekly gym nights.  About 12 weeks out from my half marathon I started my normal training plan (about 4 runs/week including speedwork, easy runs, and long runs).  Once the race got closer I started to let doubt creep in, but a mind mapping session with Kyle allowed me to put those fears aside and just go for it.  I am happy to report I finally broke the 2 hour mark that November, coming in at [1:59:45].  I called Kyle from the finish line to thank him 🙂

Fast forward to September of 2016, and I once again set my sights on a PR.  I started doing the MET classes the May leading up to the race, and added a 2nd gym night to my week.  I was able to break my standing PR by 21 seconds, crossing the finish line in [1:59:24].  I still do the MET classes twice a week, and have a goal of breaking [1:59] this fall.  I firmly believe that I could never have achieved these goals without the Team at Newell Strength!”
