How Are a Great Novel and Diet Similar?

I remember the hardest diet I ever did (and I’ve done many).  It was when I was 17 years old.

I won’t go into the nitty details but…

A diet is similar to a great novel in that in both cases, you can’t wait to get to the end.

Think about that for a moment.

This is why ‘diets’ don’t work.  I’ll argue that to my grave.

Your brain doesn’t like nor will it form a habit around willpower based thoughts.

Willpower basically means doing sh** that you don’t want to be doing.

My Number One Drug of Choice

I started using this drug back in high school.

It was okay, because there was no way to test for it.

Did it give me a HUGE competitive advantage?  You bet!

In fact, I haven’t stopped using it since.

So, what is it?  Its something known as PHW.

It must be administered through your brain, then your heart and put to use by your body….

Pure, Hard, Work.

Yup, that’s it.

Dogged persistence and consistency.

Someone once told me, ‘Kyle, you know what the secret to my success is/was?’ (this as a very successful person in my opinion)…

‘Its showing up, waking up tomorrow and doing ‘it’ again.  Just follow that formula for the rest of your days and you will reach your potential…’

I Despise Moderation

Devon will tell you that I have an obsessive personality.

It has served me well and at times it has had to be called out.

But, I know through self-awareness that moderation doesn’t work for me. Be that in food, business, education, etc.

Take no offense (or take it if you want), but it has been my observation that people that live by the law of moderation typically get mediocre results in whatever areas they practice moderation in.

Moderation to me is similar to balance. Balance doesn’t get you anywhere, a life in harmony does. This means that at points certain areas will dominate your attention and at other times, other areas dominate, but it evens out.

I’d much rather (for multiple reasons, anti-moderation being one), eat one BIG meal per day than 4 small meals.

Go all in, whatever it is that you are doing, but remember to own it.

Are You Asking the Right Question?

Last year, when I was on a panel speaking to other private gym owners; I was asked what was the one trait that had served me most in my career.

Easy, eternal optimism.

Like anyone else, I have ups and downs and have to constantly work on my mindset, which I why I have studied the brain so much over the years (i.e. Mind Mapping).

Yet, I’ve come to realize that we need a balance of a positive mental attitude and a logical, linear approach.

You get a logical approach to a problem that needs to be solved by asking the right question.

For example, let’s say you are feeling low in energy, a bit too heavy and your joints hurt. If you are like most, you will assume that the problem is that you are low in energy, too heavy and have joints that hurt.

However, you’d be wrong. Those are merely symptoms of the problem. The root problem could be something like trouble in forming discipline, not knowing which habits to work on, and so on.

No matter how good your intentions are, there is nothing worse than running enthusiastically in the wrong direction.

Remember, the thing is not the thing (almost always).

Dan Gable, famous for having only lost one wrestling match in his entire collegiate career at the University of Iowa and for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games was asked by a reporter . . .

 

“What made you such a good collegiate wrestler?”

 

He said, “Well, you know, every afternoon at Iowa State we used to work out from [4:00]-[6:30], and from [6:00]-[6:30], we did the hardest conditioning anybody could ever go through. Then at [6:30], that was it.

 

People went to the showers and then left. I went to the locker room and I got my jump rope.

 

Then I’d go back into the wrestling room, and I’d start jumping rope until I passed out.”

Your Main Problem is That You Think You Shouldn’t Have Any

 

While eating a nice grass fed, organic cheeseburger the other night, I had a Tony Robbins documentary on in the background.

 

I have long been a HUGE fan of Robbins’ work.  ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ is one of my top 5 all-time books and was THE book that got everything started for me.

 

Devon and I even stayed at his resort in Fiji for our honeymoon 5 years ago.

 

His message is always relevant to the listener IF the student is ready to accept the truth.  And that was once again the case in his documentary when he told the crowd: You wanna know what your main problem is?  Your main problem is that you don’t think you should have any of the problems that you have.

 

Think about that for a second.  The nature of the mind is to not want problems, yet we cannot grow without problems, failure and challenge.

 

The winner’s mind seeks out and embraces problems.  If you avoid problems at all costs, you are living small.

 

Were you put here on this earth to live big or play small?

 

The purpose of life I believe, is growth.  You cannot stay the same.  You are either regressing or growing.

 

The very law of momentum in life means that it’s impossible to stay put.  Yes, you can rest for a few minutes to smell the roses, like the sherpa that is climbing the mountain.  But like the sherpa, you must decide to keep going.

 

The higher up you go, the more important it will be to rest and recharge.

Will and Skill(s)

As I am sitting here in my basement office, beginning this piece, I am now a 35-year old man.

Far too old to even attempt to enter the Navy, which would be the first step to becoming a Navy SEAL.

Nor would I even attempt it at this stage of my life.  Devon and Braxton depend on me, but I have often fantasized what would have happened if I was a young, single guy and I had the wisdom of life that I have now, compared to when I was 20.

In my fantasy world, I think I could have made ‘it’.  I wouldn’t be worried about the physical tests, but I was always highly intrigued by knowing whether or not I could have made it mentally.

The SEALS are known for their mental and physical toughness.  I have read many SEAL books and have even employed some of their methods into some of the ‘mental toughness’ portions of workouts at Newell Strength and in my own training as well.

But enough of my fantasy world.  Why I am talking about SEALs in this article?

Well, I’ll tell ya why…

SEALs to me are associated with a certain mindset.  And this article my friend, is about the biggest mindset myth and a new way to achieve success.

In my humble opinion, the biggest mistake that people make in terms of trying to create a habit (your entire life is nothing but a bunch of habits: what you eat, how you work, whom you hang out with) is they rely on will-power.

Somewhere along the way, it was taught to us that will-power was the key to success.  And while a little bit of it is great, too much will lead you right back to your starting point or perhaps even a lesser starting point from which you began.

The human brain (PFC) runs on will power.  And that part of your brain runs on glucose.  Once the glucose is ‘burned up’, you will go into a mental fog so to speak.

You have to let that area of your brain replenish before tapping back into it.  Yes, you can try and push through it, but if you ever have in the past you will know that it feels like moving through quicksand.

And that is because you enter into a ‘tension zone’ and tension is pretty much like sand paper for creative thought.

What this also means though is that our supply of will power is finite.  BUT, most people never use their will power at all.

They go through life like a robot, happy to be mediocre.  They do what they are told and their entire life is one big comfy routine.  They never try to get out of their comfort zone.

Being that most people never use their own will-power, you can and should use other people’s will power.  How can you do this?

Simple, whatever it is that you are trying to do, whatever you are trying to achieve, tell them about it and tell them often.  They are going to ask you about how your quest is coming along, and they will do this constantly if you tell enough people.

I’d say that nearly 100% of people that have lost significant amounts of weight and have kept it off have used this little trick.  People start to cheer them on and every time they see them, they will ask, ‘How much more have you lost?’

I use weight as an example because the physical visual is very easy to comprehend.  Now, if they used will power and didn’t tell anyone about their journey, you could be sure that they would have failed.

The brain doesn’t form habit around will-power based activities.  The brain can only form habit around things it finds easy and pleasurable to do. So yes, you will need a little will power but that also means that you will have to rob it from other areas of your life.

Trying to become a best-selling author and lose 50 pounds at the same time?  Good luck, unless you are writing a best-selling book about your journey in real time (which would actually be pretty smart now that I think about it).

Ok, so now that you have some understanding of the biggest myth of the mind; the myth of pushing through everything you don’t enjoy doing and hoping that success finds you on the other side of that rainbow, let’s move onto my new views on goals and goal setting.

I was recently exposed to an outside the box thought, one of the first that I have heard in quite some time and by that, I mean an idea that I have never heard anywhere else.

In the book, ‘How to Fail at Almost Anything and Still Win Big’ by Scott Adams (this will be this month’s book of the month), he talks about goals and they are the wrong way to go.

Goals leave us in an almost perpetual state of feeling like a failure, IF you set them like most people set them or if you even set goals at all.

We are never quite there when it comes to goals, so that will leave a feeling of: still haven’t made it or, man, I still have a long way to go’.  Who wants to have our numero uno environment, your brain, having thoughts of failure constantly?

I sure don’t.  But what’s the solution? It’s to have systems that you can work every single day.  A system is binary, it’s did you do it today, or didn’t you?  Systems are habits and now you can see why I am so intrigued by this idea.

Systems will move you towards anything you want to achieve and they will leave you each day feeling like a positive success.

This may take some thought on your part, so to help you along, here are some of my systems that I need to employ every day:

  • Wake up by [4:30] AM at the latest every day
  • Workout in the morning or get some kind of sweat on every single day
  • Perform my ‘brain’ exercises immediately after taking the dogs for their walk, first thing in the morning
  • Setting my schedule for tomorrow, the night before. And doing a recap of the current day.

I have more, and I won’t explain why I do each of these just now because this is quite lengthy and I want to make sure you get through this before that brain sugar burns off.

I do know though that if I do these systems every day, I will move closer and closer to what I want to achieve in life.  Notice too that there are no specific goals because a specific goal would be just that, a goal.  These are general systems, although specific to me, that will and have been working magic in my life.

Why You Must Know ‘Your Edge’

Braxton is a daredevil.

When he started to become more mobile a few months ago, we would cringe at first when he came up to a step or edge.

However, he learned very quickly to turn around and go down feet first.

Except for when he saw the dog bed lying there in the living room.  Our dining room and living room are only separated by a small 6 inch drop off; otherwise it’s an open floor space.

Munchie will go up to the part where the dog bed is and he will fall face first into it, knowing full well that the soft bed will break his fall.

Braxton (in case you were unaware, his nickname is Munchie) seems to have developed great depth perception, thus allowing him to know when he is at the top of a case of stairs, a ledge, the edge of the pool, etc.

(As an aside, I partly think this is due to his lack of TV time.  A toddler’s dimensional vision is still developing until roughly the 2-year-old mark.  They cannot distinguish that the shapes on the TV are supposed to be 3-dimensional, often causing problems in depth perception and vision, which can lead to processing issues.  But lets save that for another Mind Map article).

Now I don’t want you to think we just let Munchie roam free without supervision, we are always there watching, waiting if he needs us.  But, his ‘knowing of where the edge is’ has given us peace of mind and has allowed himself to explore and do things that he otherwise wouldn’t be able to do.

So how does that relate to you?  Well, ‘knowing thyself’ is a crucial factor in living a meaningful, on-point life.  And as you know from observing others, self-awareness or a lack thereof is the difference between those that create their own destiny and the common ‘tire-kicker’.

I want you to think of what your limitations are, what you are not good at and start there.  I will use myself as an example, so you can see warts and all but more importantly so you have an example of how this can be applied to your life.

First, I am not good at corralling my many ideas into actionable steps for others to follow.  Ideas pop into my head a mile a minute but ideas are no good if you they aren’t actionable.  I guess that the entrepreneurial blood in me.  But I’ve had to surround myself with a team and coaches that are good and creating step-by-step instructions.

Next one, I am not the best at techie stuff or handy man work for that matter.  I can do both; I can figure them out, but not without some frustration.  And, I know what I value my time at (monetarily in this case) and most of the time it just doesn’t make sense for me to fiddle around with the stuff I am not good at, especially when it causes ‘frustration momentum’.

Thirdly, trying to ‘Coach’ Devon when she doesn’t ask for it.  Guys listen up here; YOU must be given permission to Coach the person, whomever it is.  Otherwise your opinion will be unwelcome and thus it will remain unimplemented.  I violate this rule of Mind Map constantly with Devon and then I have to catch my mistake, apologize and realize it for what it is.  Every time you find yourself telling someone else: you should, you have to, you must; stop and ask yourself internally if they asked for your advice.

Another one; I know that my work will expand to fill the time that I give it.  That is why I must work to the clock when I am in high focus mode.  And when it’s a bit longer term than the immediate moment, I must set deadlines.  Remember this, deadlines are our lifelines.

Finally, and it took me until a few years ago to finally realize this fully, I am an extreme introvert.  Yes, I can function in public and hold a conversation, but when it comes to managing my energy, this knowledge has been HUGE for me.  I recharge by quiet time and being alone.  Parties and such have always drained me, but I have gotten better in social situations because I have given myself time to recharge on other days of the week.

This explained to me why in high school and college I was always begrudgingly going to parties and I would often leave early to go find solitude somewhere.  Weird yes, but I’d rather know myself and be weird than just follow the herd.

There you go, 5 things of my own that I constantly have to be aware of.  Things that are ‘my edge’.  Make a list of 5 things that represent your edge and work on them frequently.  (I don’t mean work on them as in learn how to doing something you aren’t good at, I mean work on them in terms of self-awareness).  Know thyself.
