Workshop (3)

Yup, He Said ‘It’

Two weeks ago, I was at a morning workshop.

And during one of the breaks, a fellow at my table decides to weigh in on fitness (once people find out what we do at Newell Strength, I hear all types of input and advice).

This guy was in his early 60’s and claiming about how great of shape he used to be in and how he could eat anything and just work it off.

Yet, he was telling me this as he was saying that he no longer worked out and WHILE HE WAS STUFFING COOKIES IN HIS MOUTH!

Listen, Coaching is about support, but it’s also about being a mirror to the student.

We are all adults here and we need to eat like adults.  No one likes a cheat day more than me, but if I ate like an unsupervised kid all day long, week after week, cookie after cookie, potato chip after potato chip, the results are going to be exactly what you would expect they should be.

And no, you can not outwork a poor diet.  In fact, exercise does little in and of itself to drop the weight, its when it is conjunction with the proper nutrition that the magic happens.

Systems Trump Goals

Tomorrow, I am putting on a workshop for the clients of Newell Strength.  The topic: goal setting.

But I don’t teach it in the way that most people think of goals.

Think about it, are people’s percentage of reaching goals positive or negative?

Negative and that’s because they don’t understand the mechanics of a goal.

In today’s podcast, I dive in and deliver 11 minutes of goal oriented wisdom.

You can take a listen here: http://kylenewell.com/inner-strength-podcast/

Has Anyone Ever Taught You How to Eat and Elephant?

Has Anyone Ever Taught You How to Eat and Elephant?

It’s Sunday morning as I am writing this in my basement office before Mr. Munchie wakes up.

And being that it’s Sunday, I bet you that I can read your mind; you are thinking of everything that has to be done with the upcoming week’s worth of time.

Your mind is racing and you won’t fully be able to enjoy the activities of today because of your wandering mind.

It’s normal, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept it.

An elephant is trained from a young age to be submissive by a small rope or chain that is tied to its leg.

At such a small size, the soon to be ginormous creature can’t break free.  It gives up after a few tries.

But when it’s bigger, it can easily break free.  So why doesn’t it?  Because the thought patterns it has in its brain have been laid down and are set in stone.

Habits of thought are very tough to break.

You may set your goals if you are in the minority.  But  you stop there.  You need to go deeper.  You need to break them down further and further.

After all, you eat an elephant one bite at a time.

Take a deep breath and relax, have some clarity moving forward into the coming week.

We are starting our next round of the famed Ripped Dads contest this coming week.  If are a dad or know of a dad that could use some breaking down of his habits, send the to apply here: http://www.newellstrength.com/men-2/

P.S-There may a spot left at November’s Theater of the Mind workshop that I am putting on in 10 days.  You’ll learn all about ‘elephants’ at it:).  You can check if there is still a spot. http://kylenewell.com/theaterofmind
